Hood F1: A New LIFE

Post by andreamodawf1 »

At the end of the 1990 Formula One Season, New Zealander Stuart Hood bought the Life team. Hood named the team Hood F1, and the team gained sponsors from Fisher & Paykel, a home appliance company in New Zealand. The drivers were the team boss (Stuart) and Gary Brabham.

The team hired most of the ex - Life staff, and the team made a copy of the Life L190. The original one was kept for Brabham, and Hood got the new one. There wasn't enough time to make a modern chassis, which is why they copied the L190 and used the old one. The cars were fitted with Cosworth V10 engines.

The first race, United States Grand Prix, coming soon!

Will this experience be the catalyst for their future sponsorship of the then-future A1 GP Team New Zealand?

In 1991, the Footwork Porsches were the ones to beat in pre-qualifying.
"I don't think we should be used to finance (the manufacturers') R&D because they will produce that engine anyway" said Monisha Kaltenborn.
"You will never see a Mercedes using a Ferrari engine or the other way round."

1991 United States Grand Prix

Unfortunately Hood F1 didn't make their debut, because the cars weren't ready in time. There were rumours of Stuart giving up and selling the team, but he stated that "he wants to have a part in F1 History". Will he be part of F1 History for a good reason, or bad, or simply not at all?

Results: (I will only show top 6 and Hood F1's results):

1. Ayrton Senna - McLaren
2. Roberto Moreno - Benetton
3. Jean Alesi - Ferrari
4. Mika Hakkinen - Lotus
5. Pierluigi Martini - Minardi
6. Martin Brundle - Brabham

DNA - Stuart Hood - Hood F1
DNA - Gary Brabham - Hood F1

1991 Brazilian Grand Prix:

Stuart Hood stated that they are still not ready. The cars are ready, but Hood and Brabham are unfit and decided to spend the week doing fitness, so they have sacrifised the grand prix for time to do fitness. The FIA stated that teams should not withdraw to do fitness, and what Hood F1 has done is appauling, and if a driver is unfit they should be either replaced or just race anyway. Hood F1 didn't even attempt to find 2 replacement drivers. The FIA have also given a fine to the team of $2 million dollars for missing the first two races, plus they are yet to pay their $100,000 deposit that needs to be paid by new teams.

Results:

1. Nelson Piquet - Benetton
2. Roberto Moreno - Benetton
3. Ayrton Senna - McLaren
4. Eric Bernard - Lola
5. Ricardo Patrese - Williams
6. Nigel Mansell - Williams

Wow, at least Life managed to compete since the first round! This sounds like the prologue of Andrea Moda. Don't be surprised if you receive an offer from an Italian shoe magnate to buy your team.

Will I be shot if I suggest that Thunderbirds' The Hood is actually in charge and that he's currently using his normal devious spying skills to nick ideas from other teams to further develop his own cars before entering them into their first race?

But after all, why should he need to? He looks like an egghead...

1991 Monaco Grand Prix:

Hood finally paid the $2100 000, but Gary Brabham announced that he had quit the team because "they couldn't get their act together". Stuart then went on for a search of drivers. No one wanted to drive for the team except for former EuroBrun driver Claudio Langes. Langes said that he'll jump at any opportunity to be back in Formula One no matter how bad the team is. They had to skip the grand prix because Stuart was busy looking for a driver, and he found Langes on the day of the race, so Stuart missed pre-qualifying.

2. Gerhard Berger - McLaren
3. Nelson Piquet - Benetton
4. Roberto Moreno - Benetton
5. Eric Bernard - Lola
6. Emmanuel Pirro - Dallara
