7:16 lap at Imola
7:16 lap at Imola
Reading the profile of Life Racing Engines, I cannot get my head around the fact that the car's quickest lap at Imola pre-qualifying was 7 minutes and 16 seconds. I know the car and engine were pathetic pieces of rubbish, but how on earth did Bruno Giacomelli clock a lap THAT slow. He must have gone around at about 5MPH, or it had stopped for a few minutes during the lap. Must have been great entertainment for the hardcore F1 fans which watched pre-qualifying.

Re: 7:16 lap at Imola
I think it was that he went in to the pits, and didn't go out again to end that lap for 5 minutes or so.
Or something like that. It wasn't that they were that slow on raw pace.

Yeah, at 7:16, he'd have had an average speed of 25mph, so he must've stopped. Maybe he saw a nice cafe just off Tamburello and had a cup of tea or something. The car was still sufficiently slow that Giacomelli was worried about one of the other cars driving into the back of him.
Re: 7:16 lap at Imola
At that time, the first lap time was the amount of time used from the start of the session to first time driver crosses the finish line. So Giacomelli left the pits, completed the lap while seven minutes and 16 seconds had gone into the session. Then, the car failed on the following lap.
By the way, Mark Blundell qualified for the 1995 Japanese Grand Prix with a time of 16 minutes and 42 seconds.

How do you know that?

How is that even possible? Was it raining? Oh wait, there were only 24 cars in 1995...
Edit: Wasn't he also driving a McLaren that year?

Re: 7:16 lap at Imola
I'm not sure but I think it was like that, because there are other examples of that kind of times. Another which I found is for Barrichello at Imola 1994, 14 minutes and 57 seconds.

He crashed on his first flying lap and didn't take part in the 2nd qualifying session by medical advice.

Maybe this helps explain it, his team-mate was at it as well...

Re: 7:16 lap at Imola
I think the what happened for that 16 min lap of Blundell's is explained that his crash brought the session to a halt and the car is recovered to the pits on a truck and then the transponder must of triggered the timing system......

He's a grammar N*zi, not a spelling N*zi.

Yeah, it's best to check the comment before submitting it

I didn't realise you needed to use one to censor the word Nazi.

I just didn't want to invoke Godwin's Law..
And a typical punishment as I was growing up for spelling mistakes was to write out the word 20 times correctly. So...:

By the way, I cheated. Did it 5 times then copied and pasted 4 times.

Sorry, it was really a lame joke just playing the censorship bit on the word Nazi.
