F1 Finals 2010*

Post by ADx_Wales »

*Alternate ending to the 2010 F1 season.

Let's lay down the rules before we start arguing over who does what.

- The top 12 points scorers after the Italian GP (Thats if the Korean GP gets cancelled, if not then the points after the Singapore GP)
- Points scorers 1st-4th get a bye in Flyaway 1 (Singapore/Japan)
- Points scorers 5th-12th will take part in "Wildcard Playoff", 5th vs 12th, 6th vs 11th and so on, in flyaway 1. (Singapore/Japan) Whoever finishes higher in the race gets through to the second round.
- Winners of wildcard playoffs will play-off against 1st-4th points finishers in flyaway 2 (Japan/Korea)
- Winners of each playoff will take part in semi-finals in flyaway 3 (Brazil)
- Grand Final at flyaway 4 (Abu Dhabi)

He'res a Better example of the elimination format with the current standings.

Wildcard playoffs (Flyaway 1 Singapore/Japan)
- WCP1 - Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) Vs Vitaly Petrov (Renault)/Kamui Kobayashi (Sauber) (VP and KK are tied on points currently)
- WCP2 - Felipe Massa (Ferrari) Vs Reubens Barrichello (Williams)
- WCP3 - Nico Rosberg (Merc) Vs Adrian Sutil (Force India)
- WCP4 - Robert Kubica (Renault) Vs Michael Schumacher (Merc)

Whoever finishes higher in the race advances to Quarter Finals

Quarter Finals (Flyaway 2 - Japan/Korea)

QF1 - Mark Webber (Red Bull) Vs <WINNER WCP4>
QF2 - Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) Vs <WINNER WCP3>
QF3 - Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) Vs <WINNER WCP2>
QF4 - Jenson Button (McLaren) Vs <WINNER WCP1>

Semi Finals (Flyaway 3 - Brazil)

SF1 - <WINNER QF1> Vs <WINNER QF4>
SF2 - <WINNER QF2> Vs <WINNER QF3>

Grand Final (Flyaway 4 - Abu Dhabi)

<Winner SF1> Vs <Winner SF2>

Of course, these head-to-heads take place within the flyaway venue's Grand Prix.

While all of this is happening, the points system still counts towards the constructors championship, and maybe even the drivers championship for direct comparison to the eventual Grand Final winner.

Coulthard vs Sato

China
M Schumacher vs Sato
Barrichello vs Fisichella
Button vs Montoya
Trulli vs Massa

Japan
Sato vs Massa
Barrichello vs Button

Brazil

Gets a bit unfair when you have to include drivers who have lost their seat or are out injured (Trulli/Ralf in 2004)!

I'll do one for 2008 as there were no replacements that year:

The standings after Italy were:

1. Lewis Hamilton 78
2. Felipe Massa 77
3. Robert Kubica 64
4. Kimi Raikkonen 57
5. Nick Heidfeld 53
6. Heikki Kovalainen 51
7. Fernando Alonso 28
8. Jarno Trulli 26
9. Sebastian Vettel 23
10. Mark Webber 20
11. Timo Glock 15
12. Nelson Piquet Jnr 13

So Singapore:

WCP 1 Heidfeld v Piquet Jr. (bet he wouldn;t have crashed in that scenario!) :0
WCP 2 Kovalainen v Glock
WCP 3 Alonso v Webber
WCP 4 Trulli v Vettel

Japan:

QF1 Hamilton v Vettel
QF2 Massa v Alonso
QF3 Kubica v Glock
QF4 Raikkonen v Heidfeld

China:

Vettel v Raikkonen
Alonso v Kubica

Brazil:

Alonso v Raikkonen

So using that Alonso is 2008 champ having been nowhere until the last few races of the year....TERRIBLE idea.

Plus it's Alonso too.

I did 2000s titles and it was like following

2000 M Schumacher
2001 M Schumacher
2002 M Schumacher
2003 Räikkönen
2004 Sato
2005 Alonso
2006 Alonso
2007 Räikkönen
2008 Alonso
2009 Webber

Webber's title is quite interesting. Despite his dismal Japanese GP he wins it, since he was there against Timo Glock who did not start! I'll do 1990s soon and find out if there's other amazing things.

1990s like this
1990 Boutsen
1991 Senna
1992 Berger
1993 Prost
1994 Schumacher
1995 Hill
1996 Schumacher
1997 Alesi
1998 Häkkinen
1999 Irvine

Some points of interest:
1994 it was Schumacher vs Hill. Hill would have needed to complete one lap after the clash to win. If system had been like that, he most likely would have done it even if car was not working
1999 If Ferrari's disqualification in Malaysia would have stood, Ralf Schumacher would have been champion, as the opponent in final was Barrichello.

Can I take this as a hint that it's Reject-worthy? If Stefan Johannson and Takuma Sato can win it, who's to say that Vitaly Petrov or Kamui Kobayashi might win it in 2010...

It looks as if the Korean GP is actually going to take place, which means there are 3 points scoring rounds to go before the F1 Finals 2010 Wildcard Playoffs take place.

If it would unexpectedly be cancelled anyway, of course you could retroactively make one of those into a Playoff.

BUT LET'S HOPE IT WON'T, because that will mean FOUR consecutive weeks of no racing. FOUR!! That's one more than this "summer break" this is supposed to be!! :o

Wonder if anything changes if you just do a straight top-16 shootout over the last 4 races (i.e. 1st v 16th, 2nd v 15th, 3rd v 14th etc.)?

I'd do it if I knew where I could find a website that told you points standings part-way through seasons gone by, but the only ones I know of just have them at season's end!

This is a very entertaining championship format. Here's hoping that it gets reported about on the podcast. It's completely worth it - if solely for Sato's and Johansson's titles.

If there were 26-32 competitors in an F1 season I would gladly go for a straightforward 16 driver knockout format, but I set this format up very close to the NFL Playoff/Superbowl format, the obvious difference being that there are no seperate AFC/NFCs in F1, that would just be pure madness (as if this format isn't madness enough!).

Perhaps in a parallel universe this format was set, maybe in the formative years of F1 when there were less rounds maybe it would be the top 8 only knocking eachother out in the final 3 rounds. But I dont want to complicate things, especially with STEFAN JOHANSSON as 1987 F1 Finals Champion.

Keep a fraction of your eyes looking at this thread for a catchup of drivers who have qualified for the finals, especially the top 4 who are bye'd to the Quarter Finals.

A top 16 knockout would be very unpredictable and punishing. I did it solely for 1950, and the driver who won was none other than the one, the only, the great

LOUIS ROSIER!!!

As the link provides the data, Monsieur Rosier was a privateer driver who raced mainly for his own team - and the driver who co-designed the Charade racetrack at Clermont-Ferrand.

Please go on with F1 Finals. There might be an interesting winner in 1951 as well.

Well, as these five seasons show, a simple one-on-one fight barely makes any difference in the battle for the title, one different champion over five years.

As the link provides the data, Monsieur Rosier was a privateer driver who raced mainly for his own team - and the driver who co-designed the Charade racetrack at Clermont-Ferrand.

Please go on with F1 Finals. There might be an interesting winner in 1951 as well.

Of course I know who he is, I just did that to add to the wtf effect. That, or I'm just not funny.

Anyway, Ascari wins it in 1951 (boring!).

Well, before this thread, neither had I. I guess that's probably because he's from a bygone era.

And who would have won in the remaining seasons of the 50s and 60s?

I'll do this tomorrow, hope to get the results posted in the evening. Top 16 will be used where possible. If not, the top 8 will be used.

:o That's pretty shocking, considering the Lotus (or at least the engine) was a dog in '66. Who was he up against?

OK.
Due to lack of points scorers, only the top 8 could qualify for the shootout, which would begin with 3 races to go. Drivers were seeded, which meant that the quarters would see matches where the sum of the seeds would add up to 9 (1st v. 8th). Assuming the top seeds in each match won, it should then add up to a total of 5 in the semis, and 3 in the finals, meaning the top 2 with 3 races to go would be in the final.

Here are the seeds with 3 races left.
1. Jack Brabham
2. Graham Hill
3. John Surtees
4. Jochen Rindt
5. Jackie Stewart
6. Lorenzo Bandini
7. Denny Hulme
8. Jim Clark

Quarters
Jack Brabham (Ret, 7 laps) v Jim Clark (Ret, 58 laps)
Jochen Rindt (4th) v Jackie Stewart (Ret)
John Surtees (Ret, 31 laps) v Lorenzo Bandini (Ret, 33 laps)
Graham Hill (Ret) v Denny Hulme (3rd)

Semis
Jim Clark (1st) v Jochen Rindt (2nd)
Lorenzo Bandini (Ret, 34 laps) v Denny Hulme (Ret, 18 laps)

Final
Jim Clark (Ret) v Lorenzo Bandini (Did not participate)
