Formula Elaborate Bluff - 2010: Signups open!

Post by girry »

Welcome, everyone!

Today is July 26, 2009 - and it is a great time for any carney to make use of nearly unprecented turmoil in the history of Grand Prix racing, with all the biggest names in the sport having confirmed to be joining a new breakaway series.

It is now your chance to play as the manager of a new entrant! A chance to clobber together a shoestring budget and an unfancied bunch of carnies, get them to build a shite-box for you and somehow, een get it on the grid in a Grand Prix.... and, maybe, if you play your cards and politics just right - even have a shot at challenging some of the existing ten AI teams for legitimate Grand Prix racing glory!

Image

To join the game - just check here who is available, post a list of your three preferred teams within the next few days, and girry-AI will draw who gets who. You can even select entrants outside of the list - though for that, your team will have to be a real-life team, and girry will need to be convinced for their genuine intention to play the game too.

Some background
18 June, 2009 || FOTA Press Release

Since the formation of FOTA last September the teams have worked together and sought to engage the FIA and commercial rights holder, to develop and improve the sport.

Unprecedented worldwide financial turmoil has inevitably placed great challenges before the F1 community. FOTA is proud that it has achieved the most substantial measures to reduce costs in the history of our sport. In particular the manufacturer teams have provided assistance to the independent teams, a number of which would probably not be in the sport today without the FOTA initiatives.

The FOTA teams have further agreed upon a substantial voluntary cost reduction that provides a sustainable model for the future. Following these efforts all the teams have confirmed to the FIA and the commercial rights holder that they are willing to commit until the end of 2012.

The FIA and the commercial rights holder have campaigned to divide FOTA. The wishes of the majority of the teams are ignored. Furthermore, tens of millions of dollars have been withheld from many teams by the commercial rights holder, going back as far as 2006. Despite this and the uncompromising environment, FOTA has genuinely sought compromise.

It has become clear however, that the teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 World Championship. These teams therefore have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new Championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners.

This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders. The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series.
23 June 2009 || A FOTA calendar?

A supposed FOTA calendar has been appearing in the media in the last few hours, including Monaco, Monza, Suzuka, Abu Dhabi and Singapore. In addition there are former F1 venues in Buenos Aires, (Argentina), Mexico City, Jerez, Imola, Montreal, Indianapolis, Magny-Cours and potentially either Adelaide or Surfers' Paradise in Australia. New venues listed are Portimao, in Portugal, a street race in Helsinki and Lausitzring in Germany. The calendar does not really sound very likely as it seems to be rather backward-looking in style. We had heard whispers that it was more likely that we would see two or even three races in the United States, which is a key market for the automobile manufacturers and has only been excluded from F1 in recent years because local promoters will not pay the fees being demanded.

Having the basis of a calendar no doubt will help to add to the impression that FOTA is serious about starting it own championship. There are now few people in F1 who do not believe the organisation to be completely serious, but nothing is likely to happen until the FIA meets in Paris tomorrow to consider its strategies for the future.
24 July 2009 || FIA remins defiant - only five teams confirmed for the 2010 Formula One, additional entry deadline in October

At the meeting of the World Sport Council in Paris today the FIA confirmed just four teams that will race in Formula 1 next season. At the moment the FIA Formula 1 World Championship boasts Williams F1, Force India, US F1, Campos Grand Prix and Manor Grand Prix. Eight of the ten teams participating in Formula One currently remain on the sidelines, expecting a new World Championship to be formed shortly.

Before the meeting a peace deal was on the table, but in the end, the FIA refused to accept FOTA's demands to drop the planned 45 million euro cost cap for 2010, leaving the FOTA teams no option but to walk out of the meeting and continue with their planned Grand Prix World Championship.

The FIA has announced a new October 4 deadline for prospective entrants to submit their entry bids for the 2010 season, evidently expecting the FOTA teams to eventually retract at the risk of losing their slots in the 13-team championship.
25 July 2009 || GPWC announces August deadline for team entry bids

As a result of the failure to come to meeting of the World Sport Council in Paris yesterday, the FOTA are intent to proceed with their new breakaway series and have announced a new August 26 deadline for teams planning to file entry bids for their new Grand Prix World Championship, scheduled to start in March 2010.

All eight teams currently in F1 that are not entered for the new Championship are expected to submit bids to join the GPWC, with at least some of the fourteen teams the FIA snubbed in the entry process earlier this year also expected to submit their bids.

Gameplay

Gameplay is turn-based. Every "gameplay week" will constitute a new turn. In real-life time, each turn will last between one-two days and one-two weeks at most - depending on how long all the processes take each week, though the objective is to get them completed fairly rapidly. You can also send Girry actions for multiple turns at once.

During one turn, you may select only one of the following actions:

- Set up a factory
Only relevant to projects which have no factory to start with.
If that's the case, your options are limited.
a) Merging your outfit with a team with a team that already has an existing factory,
b) sneaking up to a struggling team at the right time and taking over their operations, or...
c) sucking it up and paying a flat 10 million fee to set up a factory at a location of your choice. This option is C. :fittipaldi:

- Negotiate with a driver
Says it all on the title. The only limit is that your driver has to be a real driver.
Basically, just send Girry a free-form bid and he will direct it to the driver you wish to sign. If they get convinced by the bid and agree, congratulations!
If they do not, they will either allow you to make another offer (during the same turn), or just decline altogether.
NOTE: It is recommended to sign enough drivers to have your cars filled at all times, even in the event of an injury!

- Negotiate with a sponsor
Similarly as with driver negotiations, you send Girry a free-form bid and he will direct your bid to the board of the sponsor you wish to sign.
There's a list of suggested sponsors on the Google Sheet, but you are also welcome to contact companies outside of the sheet!
If they are interested, Girry will return your bid with a contract offer from the sponsor - which might also be allowed to be haggled during the same turn.
Make sure to keep your sponsor happy and to complete everything you promise them - or else, you might risk them pulling out without paying you!
NOTE: At any time, you may have up to eight sponsors onboard.

- Negotiate with an engine supplier
You need an engine supplier to make your car go.
Cosworth publicly offers a deal of 2.5M € upfront payment to supply your team with engines through the year, with another 8 millions to be paid to them during the season.
You may also negotiate with any of Mercedes, Renault, Ferrari, Toyota or BMW too.

- Hire or fire new staff
Most teams already have some employees, but you can also use a turn to hire or fire some staff.
Remember that each staff member gets paid 1.000€ each week.
NOTE: Make sure you have enough money to pay your staff salary at all times, or you might risk a strike at your factory!

- Negotiate with a car designer
If you wish to design a chassis (which is highly recommended) you first need to have a designer to do it.
NOTE: Designers in this game cost nothing - just find your favourite real-life designer/engineer, and make them a bid.
Just remember that their skill impacts the quality of your car....

- Submit an entry bid
This costs nothing! Just remember to do this - otherwise you won't get an entry. :williams1993:

- Start designing a new chassis
You must use one turn to start designing a new chassis and allocate a budget for the design process.
How good the design will be depends on this budget and the skill of the designer.
Designing a chassis will always take **8 weeks** by default. You will be able to ask your design team to rush it, but that will risk the chassis being a bit … rushed.
It's recommended to have an engine contract before you start designing a car, or your car risks being a disaster!

- Get tyres for the season
Bridgestone has the monopoly here. Suck it up and pay the 1m€ or your car will have a hard time moving.

- Start building a new chassis
Building one chassis will cost 1m€. Remember to build enough chassis to be able to deal with possible accidents during the season!
To build a new chassis, you first need to have a factory and some staff.
Depending on how much staff you have, this process takes anywhere between 2 and 6 weeks (building 1 car at once), 3 and 7 weeks (2 chassis at once), 4 and 8 weeks (3 chassis at once) etc.
NOTE: If you are unlucky with RNG, you might face an additional delay of 1-2 weeks!
NOTE: While you are building a chassis, your staff will be preoccupied with this process every other turn. This means, during this process, you cannot do anything else on one out of 2 turns!

- Develop your existing chassis
If you have an existing chassis and some spare cash, you are welcome to use your turns to introduce mid-season upgrades.
Their quality depends on the skill of your designer and the amount of staff you have.
The length of this process will be RNG'd every time and be anywhere between 4 and 8 gameplay weeks.

- Offer to merge with another team
Finding it tough to go alone? At any point of the season, you are welcome to send an offer to any other team - be it AI or real-life player - and request to merge your teams together.
If you are lucky and have enough to offer to make them interested in co-working with you, you might get a contract offer in return!

- Offer to take over a bankrupt/extinct team's resources
It is most likely that some of the prospective teams won't actually make it to the grid.
So, if you arrive at the scene at the right moment, you might get lucky & be able to vulture yourself as the new owner. :sauber: :carabante: :stefanovic:

- Pay for travel to testing or races
It is of utmost importance that your team is at the track when the Grand Prix takes place.
Travel cost to an event on the same continent will be 250k€, to an event on another continent than where your factory is will be 500k€.
NOTE: Back-to-back events (happening on consecutive weeks) can be paid together if they're on the same continent.
NOTE: You may pay for your travel in advance or during the week of the Grand Prix, but may only pay the travel cost of one event during a turn.
NOTE: You may always select the option "TRAVEL LOW COST" - the price of travel will be only 50% of the normal price!
This option, however, adds a considerable risk of delay or a disaster happening during your trip. :enzo:

- Other
You are also welcome to get creative & invent and request your own action!
For example, going full Sparta at the casino is especially recommended, if we're in March already, and all you have built is one front wing. :windsor:

It probably goes with saying, managing your turns well will be of a high importance - especially if your team isn't very famous and/or must start building its resources from the scratch. :badoer:

Image

But... most of this stuff costs a lot of money, and my team doesn't really have any. How the hell do you get any money to do these things, then?
Well, to repeat... basically, you have only few options:
- Use your existing money! Existing F1 teams will of course enjoy their existing Concorde cash from 2009 already.
- Sign deals with sponsors - you have eight slots for a reason!
- Obtain an entry for either one of the series - after new TV deals are confirmed for both new series, you can expect to land a sizeable wad of TV money
- Random events that might happen during the season - make sure to make use of them!

Right then. Once we actually complete this pageantry and get to March 2010, how will the racing be simulated?
Girry will keep this as a secret for now, but it will definitely be simulated using an actual game, not just a spreadsheet!
Therefore, those of you managers who fight through all your financial struggles, get your entries sorted, and cars built & painted, will be rewarded with the unique feeling of witnessing your own car on the Grand Prix track for the first time against many odds.

Image

It is unlikely that I will simulate the game anywhere beyond the end of 2010. So, the fun will be mostly in the process of building the teams and seeing who gets their cars on the grid, and in what shape it turns out.

Once more:
Welcome, hope as many of you join the game as possible - I promise the gameplay won't be as exhausting as it sounds, the season itself will manage itself - and feel free to bombard girry with any questions either on discord or forum pm, because there will probably be plenty of unclarified things!

I claim March F1 Team as my priority.
As alternatives, I’d take Brabham (aka Hilmer Motorsport) or USF1.

Re: Formula Elaborate Bluff - 2010: Signups open!

Post by girry »

The game launch was very, very obviously half-baked. Therefore, upon some second thoughts, I have clarified a few things and altered some others before we get going:

- Andretti and Penske would have been pretty much OP to play as, so they will be unplayable after all. They might still enter under certain circumstances, but if they do, they shall be AI teams.
- Given that Peter Sauber is not interested in setting up a new team, he is going to unplayable too. In the case his old team has nobody else to rescue them but him, he might still turn up as an AI owner though.

- Jordan and Minardi remain playable, but Eddie Jordan and Paul Stoddart will not enter F1 to waste any more of their hard-earned money. Therefore, they will pull their bid out if it seems that the plan for the season will not be profitable. (Also, EJ's starting money has been halved. He needs some budget to keep his team going, after all.) Also, they would prefer to take over their old teams in Silverstone and Faenza, if in any way possible.
- Similarly, the famous junior teams - DAMS, Carlin, Super Nova, and ART Grand Prix, will remain playable - but given that they already have a solid base operation in junior series, they won't just enter for the sake of it, but the planned operation also has to be profitable or you cannot submit your entry.
- Piquet Motorsports is playable and doesn't even have to have a profitable financial plan, but in order to exist, it must first and foremost hire Nelson Piquet jr. If another team hires the kid, Piquet Motorsports will immediately dissolve
- The more reputable a sponsor or a driver, the less likely they are going to be to even negotiate with a team that has a poor reputation. Especially certain couple of teams will struggle with this, and you can only blame yourself for picking those teams...

---

To clarify a few more questions I have had:
- The F1 budget cap planned for 2010 is 45.5 million euros (so, if this rule stays in place in Formula One as it is, that will be the maximum amount of expenses you can spend during the year 2010. Or, else...)
- It will be possible to rename your team, if there's a justifiable reason for the action, and it's not too unrealistic for the character you're playing
- The "team alignment" on the sheet only impacts the decisions if the team stays as AI. If a player plays the game, they can go for whichever series (F1 or GPWC) they want
- Along the rest of 2009 and during 2010, there will be many, many events that will have their outcome RNG'd - and they will be largely based on those that happened in real life
- For a team manager, it is going to be possible to take loans and be creative with the handling of your debt... but investing in the stock market is off limits because I am not an economist lol

Once more, apologies for the faff - and also, thank you everyone for showing a lot of interest! The amount of players has already exceeded my expectations, and everybody else is welcome to join the fun, too. The more people we get, the merrier!

**You're all free to submit and re-submit your team pick preferences for another few days. Soft deadline is the upcoming Wednesday and that might be when the teams will be allocated to you & week 1 will begin, though this might still change, either due to unplanned changes in girry's schedule or due to his personal whims**

I was planning to keep the factory level as a secret mechanic but on the last minute, I decided that was a stupid idea so decided to make them public. They're on the sheet now.

Big news: Formula Elaborate Bluff team principals have been allocated for human players!

Manor Motorsport, headed by John Booth ( shaun ), boasts plenty of junior formula experience and counts on the genius of Nick Wirth to design their challenger for the 2010 season - but can the Yorkshiremen figure out how to pay the bills?

From America, Peter Windsor ( Rob Dylan ) has been publicly bullish that USF1 is going to challenge the European establishment all the way from NASCAR homeland, in North Carolina. Naysayers claim the team doesn't really have much beyond hot air going for them, but surely that will just makes the Americans more eager to build enough of a car to shock the pompous Europeans?

Having surprisingly been snubbed in the first entry process, David Richards ( Dom ) is rumoured to have been relishing at the prospect of Formula One splitting in two, hoping to use this success to also promote the famous Aston Martin brand he is currently chairman of. Eager to finally have his Prodrive outfit be able to prove itself in the pinnacle of motorsport, can they replace their WRC success as Subaru's factory team on the previous decades on the less dirty and bumpy roads of F1?

With more F1 stints than anybody can remember, but the famous 1997 failure still fresh in everybody's eyes minds, Lola have recently been skeptical of the sky-rocketing costs in F1, and have now stayed away from the top level for almost thirteen years already indeed. However, the new cost-capped formula encouraged Martin Birrane ( dr-baker ) to make a serious entry once again, in hope that it rewards the excellence of the team more than it does the excellence of the car. After all, if there is one thing Lola can do, it's to build a car - isn't that right?

Heading Epsilon Euskadi, the premier racing team in Basque Country, Joan Villadelprat's ( DigitDan ) ambition has now outgrown Le Mans prototypes. Boasting about their relatively impressive wind tunnel, the former Benetton man genuinely looks set on the goal of tackling Formula One with his team. But the question remains, as ever: where does the money come from..?

Having entered GP2 in 2005, iSport International have never finished below the fifth place in the teams' championship. With his team proven to be competitive on the second level, Paul Jackson ( Ciaran ) believes the Norfolk squad is now more than ready to take the step up to Formula One - but is transforming a successful GP2 operation into a Formula One operation as straight-forward as it sounds?

Contrary to iSport International, Durango Formula has been a little bit less successful in their GP2 efforts, with their best finish in teams' championship a lowly eighth. That doesn't stop Ivone Pinton ( Getz ) - who had already plotted some tentative F1 plans in the 1990's - from trying again. Based in Pianiga, near Veneto, Durango doesn't currently look the most likely prospective team to succeed - but can they prove their doubters wrong?

On paper, everything looks great for Brabham: a famous name, a competent technical director in Mark Preston, and a solid base in Leafield Technical Centre that it recently acquired from the defunct Super Aguri team. However, behind the facade, there has already been plenty of turmoil, with the Brabham family having already sued their team principal, and the owner of the German Formtech company - Franz Hilmer ( Klon ) - for mis-using their good name. Even if they manage to win the legal right to the name - can Hilmer's outfit prove themselves competitive enough to call themselves Brabham in the hearts of the fans again?

Recent rumour has it that famous Malaysian low cost hotel and airline magnate Tony Fernandes ( Aislabie ) has seen a new business opportunity in Formula One and is now eager to enter the sport as a vehicle to promote his businesses and his country in the sport. Apparently 1Malaysia have already secured funding to put a lot of their competition for the possible extra entry spots to shame - but is just having a bit of cash worth much if he doesn't have the experience, expertise nor the facilities that his competition has?

Famous for already sponsoring many different motorsport teams in the past, the investment firm Superfund has hired one of the 2009 Le Mans winners with Peugeot, Alex Wurz ( Hermann95 ) to spearhead the effort as a team principal. Famous for his connections in motorsport world, Superfund could have done a lot worse than hiring Wurz. So, with some relatively secure funding already in the bank, now the Austrians just need an entry, a factory, a car designer, an engine, some capable staff, the car itself, some tyres and a couple of tyres. Plus some tens of millions of cash more than Superfund can provide. How hard can it be?

Another famous name, March, has also been looking to rise up from the coffin and return straight back to F1. However, realistic people will say that the owner of the trademark and Swindon Town chairman, Andrew Fitton ( Forti ), is going to have a hard time attracting anybody else than perhaps Max Mosley's sympathies trying to re-build his old team from the ground up. In effectively every single way. No fun, not ever?

Crowd-funding a racing team on Facebook? Let sog, says Ashley Wood ( Anna ). We all wish myF1dream good luck!

Having already managed Jordan/Midland/Spyker/Force India, Colin Kolles ( novitopoli ) already has plenty of experience managing unstable racing teams. Surely it only makes perfect sense for the Romanian dentist to enter his eponymous DTM/sportscar outfit Kolles Racing in the sport now, that everybody else seems to be suffering from a degree of unstability, too?

Also creator of the International Formula Master series, Mauro Sipsz ( Pinkd ) has financial backing from Eurosport and his N.Technology team some rock-solid experience from running Alfa Romeos in various touring car series. Can the Italians turn their touring car prowess into single seater success?

Comfortably the best team in GP2 recently, ART Grand Prix and Frédéric Vasseur ( nessafox ) did not show interest on the first round of entries but upon hearing about the looming split, might have changed their mind about joining - at least if a sensible financial package can be found. Granted - lately French teams have not been particularly en vogue at the top of Formula One tables - but if one team can buck the trend, surely it has to be ART?

Eddie Jordan ( CarloSpace ) left the sport in sour terms with the big teams. With his old team now somewhat stablely owned by Vijay Mallya, old EJ perhaps doesn't have much going for him beyond his connections and personal wealth - but what better moment to enter Jordan Grand Prix back in the sport than now when the big evil teams are suddenly departing?

Paul Stoddart ( Javi ) will probably say exactly the same thing as his trusty old brother in arms EJ. Red Bull may now be controlling his old Faenza factory, but with his aviation business now in the process of being sold up, is there anything else sensible to do for the Australian than to take the Minardi name right back where it belongs?

While Nelson Piquet( NickyDustyOwl ) may not exactly be thrilled about the idea of wasting his money at the top of the sport, a surprise Piquet Sports intervention might be required anyway for his old buddy Flav has been getting increasingly cross about Nelsinho's shortcomings. Family?

THE GAME HAS NOW BEGUN.

You may start by sending me the first week's actions - or more, if you wish, we will just go through them week by week. Good luck!

(Also, joining the game is still possible if you wish!)

March F1 Team will begin their comeback by negotiating with Telefonica to receive some big monies.
If negotiations are successful, we will then buy Pacific's old factory in Thetford the week afterwards.

Martin Birrane remembers the pain of having MasterCard as a sponsor last time Lola was in the sport, so he is hoping that either Visa or American Express will pair up with Lola this time, to try to dissociate Lola from the previous credit card association.

Lola would also like to try to attract sponsorship from HSBC, previously sponsors of Stewart in F1, or the NatWest banking group, previously sponsors of Jordan in F1 in the late 1990s.

And to help with the food budget to attract other sponsors, Lola would like to aim for sponsorship from Waitrose supermarkets and either McDonalds or Wimpy fast food restaurants.

Eddie Jordan declines to comment on the wild rumours of Jordan Grand Prix name returning to the F1 grid.

"I'm content with my current employer BBC and my focus is on the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. It is an unfortunate situation the recent developments in the FOTA-FIA dispute has led to and I can only hope the involved parties resolve the situation as soon as possible."

When pressed whether there would be interest to return to a team owner role, Jordan continued:

"Whether I have interest or not is irrelevant. F1 is in tumultuous state at the moment and I have no plans to further stir the pot."

In other news, Eddie Jordan has done his actions for the following next weeks. :deletraz:

ART officially submits their entry bid.
We prefer to sign a deal with Total, as we try to build up lot of support inside of France first. We would also like to inform if Romain Grosjean and Jules Bianchi would like to drive for us and if they can help us bring some additional French investments. Talent should be our main focus but the reality is that setting up a team is the hardest part of the road. We would like to grow along with these talented drivers in the future to be a succesful team fighing for wins. We would also like to see if Renault is interested in having us represent them.

We would also like to inquire the possibility of a partnership with peter Sauber.

that's a few actions for now (as i will not always be on the forum)
I don't know what i want and i want it now!

Manor would like to enquire with PDVSA (with the guarantee of Pastor Maldonado piloting one of the cars) and Virgin (with the guarantee of at least one British driver and a bespoke single-seater track toy, specifically for Sir Richard Branson) respectively as our main sponsors for 2010, while we begin our crusade for drivers with a little peep over the pond......

**Formula E-B Weekly Roundup**

Shock winner stuns everybody at the Hungarian GP!

In hot Hungarian summer weather, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton fought for the victory all day - until youngest-ever Formula One driver Jaime Alguersuari's spin-and-stall maneuvre at the final corner caused a timely Safety Car, that allowed the only man still yet to pit - Kazuki Nakajima - to take advantage of his alternate strategy. Alonso could only despair, as the young Japanese driver bolted on his soft tyres and blasted to victory, scoring his first points in the process!

(Results: 1. Nakajima, 2. Alonso, 3. Hamilton, 4. Button, 5. Vettel, 6. Barrichello, 7. Webber, 8. Glock)

Button 73
Vettel 51
Webber 47.5
Barrichello 47
Massa 22
Trulli 21.5
Alonso 21
Rosberg 20.5
Hamilton 15

Durango Path to F1 wrote:Durango Team Enters Partnership with Genii Capital

Durango Formula is pleased to announce it has reached an agreement with Genii Capital for a joint ownership arrangement. With Genii's support Durango takes a great leap forward in its endeavors to prepare for the 2010 Formula One season. Genii has its sights on motorsport since the mid-2000s with its Galaxy Sports Management driver development program, and with Formula One's new horizon we are confident we can make an impression for Genii and provide them with a place to push the envelope with driver development.
Motor Sport Magazine wrote:Genii Purchases Stake in Durango F1 Program

Luxembourgish investment firm Genii Capital announces that it has purchased shares of Durango Formula. The Italian team, not seen as a likely candidate to enter Formula One in 2010 despite the ongoing GPWC crisis, potentially has more significant investment than initially predicted.

In a press release Genii CEO Gerard Lopez was mum about potential effects this will have on Durango's operations or expectations. "We hope that Durango can expand into a Formula One-level operation, and with our investment and its place as a means to train our drivers we hope this is the beginning of a fruitful partnership." When asked about potential conditions for the team Lopez only replied, "I can say there will be at least one Formula One champion on the grid for 2010, rest assured."
