2020 Super Formula Championship: ROUND 2 - Autopolis
The second round was held at Autopolis and it was Impul's Valtteri Bottas who once again took pole position. Nirei Fukuzumi, who looked red hot in Q1 and Q2 could only set a lap that would see him start in 10th. TOM'S came out even worse as both of its cars only made it to Row 8.

Sean Gelael was the surprise package of this event's qualifying session as he would line up in 7th place, however this wouldn't last long as he dropped to 12th by the end of lap 1. Before ending his race at the second hairpin, Gelael was running 13th.

On lap 18, reigning champion Naoki Yamamoto was running safely in the top 3 before an unforced error under braking for turn 1 forced him to pit for new tyres - and as it would later be known - damage his front wing that the team would not change. Three laps later, Yamamoto's race ended after the front wing failed.

Bottas now led from Vandoorne and Rosenqvist as the pit stop cycle began. Bottas and Vandoorne had good stops, while Rosenqvist lost several seconds while his pitcrew tried to change one of the rear tyres, effectively ending his chance at a race win.

The gap between Bottas and Vandoorne stayed between 1 and 1.5 seconds until lap 36, where Vandoorne spun off at the second hairpin and ground to a halt in the barriers. Race over - Vandoorne had just lost 15 valuable points.

Elsewhere, Mitch Evans made his way through the field and as Vandoorne was climbing out of his car, passed Harrison Newey for second place. This did not matter to Bottas though, as his second pole position finally translated to a race win and with that, the championship lead. Nobuharu Matsushita produced a very good drive that resulted in a fourth place finish for ARTA, closely followed by Palou and the unfortunate Rosenqvist.

18-year-old North Star junior Charlie Cook has announced that he will return back to North America (most likely Indy Lights) upon the completion of the Sugo round, stating that he would still be too raw for a series of this calibre.
Cook thanks the team for giving him a chance in Super Formula and says he will use this experience to get even better.

The team will still be known as Kondo Racing with North Star for the duration of the whole 2020 season - however the sponsors demand you sign one of the following drivers:

Jann Mardenborough or Katsumasa Chiyo - both Nissan development drivers
Ryo Hirakawa - the 25yo Toyota junior still doesn't have a Super Formula seat, he is currently a teammate of Nick Cassidy at TOM'S in the GT500 class of Super GT
James Rossiter - the experienced veteran is keen to rejoin Kondo
Heikki Kovalainen - has raced for SARD in Super GT for the past few years. While not the fastest driver anymore, he still has a very safe pair of hands

or one of the fictional drivers (Tristan Jung, Malik Zidan, Takuma Taki, ...)

2020 Super Formula Championship: ROUND 3 - Sportsland SUGO
Heartbreak City?

The third round of the season was held at Sugo. It was Álex Palou who won his first pole position of the season as championship leader Valtteri Bottas was knocked out in Q2. The race began under light rain, which meant that all cars would start on intermediate tyres.

Palou led at the start, however a couple laps later he was overtaken by Rosenqvist. The Swede then proceeded to make a three-second gap in the next 5 laps; as Fukuzumi took second place from Palou. However this had a short-lasting effect as the Kahama driver spun off in turn 1 of the 11th lap, ending his race. Elsewhere, Ritomo Miyata suffered a technical problem which resulted in an extra pit.

Meanwhile Harrison Newey, starting his race from 19th, slowly started to cut through the field, but he was still way off the points positions. A few laps later, Fenestraz spun from eighth place but kept it running - unfortunately for the young Frenchman he fell back to 16th. The race then stayed relatively calm as Rosenqvist built a 6-second gap ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne.

Rain stopped on lap 21, which made things interesting as the pitstop cycle would begin a few laps later. Two laps later, Mitch Evans ended his race through a driver error in turn 4. All drivers would eventually switch to dry tyres during the pitstop phase, however with a quickly drying track drivers such as Matsushita, Tsuboi, Newey or Zhou made up a lot of places - unlike Fenestraz, who stayed out too late on intermediates.

While Takuma Sato suffered a race-ending tyre puncture, his teammate Vandoorne was on a charge as he closed up the 6-second gap to Rosenqvist in the space of about six laps. Along with the Belgian, it was Sean Gelael who found lightning pace during these conditions as he started catching up towards the points.

At that point Newey was in fourth, which became third as Nobuharu Matsushita had to retire with a suspension problem; the Mugen driver used his superior pace against both Takaboshi and Palou to build a small gap thereafter. Gelael's lightning pace almost backfired as he nearly crashed on lap 40 but kept it on the track without any significant time loss.

Gelael did get into the points positions after all however, as Mitsunori Takaboshi in the Impul crashed on lap 42 while running in fourth position (easily his best drive of the season). His teammate Bottas dispatched Naoki Yamamoto for what became eighth. Sho Tsuboi may have pushed his tyres a bit too much as he was being overtaken left, right and centre - fortunately it was still enough for a couple of points.

Vandoorne stayed right behind Rosenqvist before lauching a successful move in turn 1 on the penultimate lap. The Belgian then left his Swedish opponent for dust as he took his first win of the season.
Other results worth mentioning include Newey, who finished on the podium after starting 19th; Zhou, who took a magnificent fourth in the B-Max after a perfect tyre change; and Gelael with his first point of the year.

Most of his family and a few of the staff of his team, Team KCMG, were in attendance.

Re: 2020 Yaname Electronics Super Formula - ROUND 5 UP!

If this series is still going, Malik Zidan is interested in doing select rounds if available. Currently as reserve driver in F2 he has past experience in racing in Japan in the AutoReject Nippon Series. Having a race win and podium in the series he has more experience on these circuits compared to other drivers from Africa or Europe.

I will quicksim the remaining rounds in the next couple of weeks, but Malik Zidan will be available for 2021.
