Season start

It's time to properly kick start the 1959 season with all the important admin. As of yet, there will be no change to the car building system: https://www.gprejects.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=8151&p=383252#p383688

It is perfectly fine to hold on to any machinery you may have left over from previous seasons, though bear in mind that ageing comes for all of them. What you will need to do is bid for drivers. For this, I will ask you to submit the following:

Team name
First/second/third/etc. driver
[ranked list of drivers approached]

You may submit bids for as many seats as you wish, lists may be as long as you wish, and you may also add salary to your bids. These salary offers will be taken into consideration when carrying out driver RNGs.

Finally, we need a calendar. This will likely be decided between here and the Discord, but to begin with, please submit a ranked list of 10 circuits you wish to see on the calendar for 1959.

I will put a tentative deadline on these bids for Sunday December 19th at 5pm CET. Can't wait to bring this back.

Driver RNGs
Rob Slotemaker
1-85: joins his friend de Beaufort at Maarsbergen
86-100: focuses on local sportscar races and his driving school
80
Slotemaker is the first driver to get a ride in 1959!

Mike Parkes
1-80: agrees with David Fry's attempt to take his F2 operation into F1
81-100: prefers to focus on sorting out the F2 car's gremlins
55
Expect to see Mike Parkes and Fry make their débuts later in the season

Jean Behra
1-75: accepts a return to Voeckler as first driver
76-100: focuses on his sportscar activities
92
Behra returns on the market, turning down Voeckler's offer after scoring his first point with Lotus.

Luigi Piotti
1-70: Piotti takes the part-time offer for Arzani-Volpini and makes his F1 début
71-100: winds down his career at the age of 45
17
They're unlikely to achieve much, but the Italian squad didn't need much to convince Piotti to have a crack at it

Jack Brabham
1-85: piles on with B.C.M.A. for a third season
86-100: prefers to become a free agent after a season marred with unreliability
27
The three-time champion doesn't take much convincing to stay with the British powerhouse!

Mike Hawthorn
0-0: resumes his role as first driver for Cooper, undoing his retirement
1-100: remains dead from his injuries in a recent car accident
55
Though the offer came prior to his death, Cooper fail to resurrect Hawthorn and persuade him to drive in 1959

André Simon
1-65: continues with Voeckler for a fifth season, once again as lead driver
66-95: prefers to take a back seat and choose the second seat
96-100: takes a sabbatical from F1
18
Unlike Behra, Simon does accept Voeckler's offer and will lead the team once again in 1959

Maurice Trintignant
1-70: remains with Voeckler for a second season in the hope for a return to the points
71-95: settles for the third seat, leaving the second seat for a younger man
96-100: focuses on sportscars and F2 for the year
62
Le Pétoulet's career remains unkillable, and he stays on for his tenth season in Formula 1

Al Pease
1-65: screw it, accepts a chance to drive in a North American round despite only just getting his career started
66-100: prefers to build up his skills in local GT events first
73
As fun as it would have been, Al decides he doesn't yet have the experience to give it a crack

John Surtees
1-85: continues on from a very successful rookie season with B.C.M.A.
86-100: focuses solely on his 350-500cc double title defense
68
Despite pressure from MV Agusta to wind down his motor racing, Surtees continues to do double duty with B.C.M.A.

Hernando da Silva Ramos
1-90: jumps on the opportunity for a full season at a top team again as O.S.C.A. team leader
91-100: contemplates retiring from the sport altogether after a final sportscar campaign
66
O.S.C.A.'s 1958 rejuvenator stays on for 1959, leading the charge

Onofre Marimón
1-90: gladly jumps to O.S.C.A. as handsomely-paid second driver
91-100: retires from the sport. Ferrari or nothing.
94
Marimón turns down O.S.C.A.'s lucrative offer and puts himself out as a potential free agent, but preferring to take some time away from the sport for a while

Phil Hill
1-90: leaves Lotus to rejoin his F1 and sportscar activities under one Ferrari roof
91-100: forgoes F1 entirely to focus on said sportscar activities
48
Phil Hill takes the second seat at Ferrari for his first full-time F1 drive, though the number 1 seat has not yet been confirmed

Gerino Gerini
1-90: accepts the once-in-a-lifetime call to Ferrari as third driver
91-95: takes the offer to compete for Ugolini
96-100: takes a step back from F1
68
A no-brainer for the man, who takes his chance at the big time with both hands!

Peter Collins
1-70: pursues his Ferrari adventure for his title defense
71-95: takes on a new challenge as Mike Hawthorn's replacement at Cooper
96-100: calls a day on his career after his first title
85
And here's the first big transfer of the market! Collins puts his confidence in John Cooper's organisation for the 1959 season, leaving the top Ferrari open

Consalvo Sanesi
1-65: accepts to carry on with Centro Sud as second driver, despite worsening performances with age
66-100: decides to step away from single-seaters to focus on his role as Alfa Romeo test driver
31
The once-great Italian carries on for yet another season to keep his racing sense sharp as it can be

Stirling Moss
1-80: stays on with B.C.M.A. despite an unreliable 1958 campaign, helped by an attractive offer
81-95: finally accepts his dad's offer to help develop BRP
96-100: moves into free agency while working on his other commitments
21
B.C.M.A. carry forward their whole roster from last season, a big coup for them compared to the other big squads

Jim Russell
1-75: prolongs his stay at BRP for another season
76-100: reverts to his F3, F2 and sportscar bread-and-butter
5
Russell will once again be leading the BRP charge in 1959

Chris Bristow
1-85: jumps on his first potential taste of Formula 1 with BRP
86-100: waits to get a bit more F2 and sportscar experience first
6
Another very enthusiastic signing for the elder Moss there

Bruce McLaren
1-90: takes on a new season with Cooper with Peter Collins as mentor
91-100: hones his skills in sportscars and F2 for another year
64
The young New Zealander completes a very solid Cooper line-up

Luigi Musso
1-75: accepts a return to Ugolini after a year at Cooper
76-100: prefers to take some time away as a free agent
74
It was a close decision, but Musso will take on the task of leading Ugolini for the second time

Roy Salvadori
1-90: prolongs his Vanwall foray after scoring a maiden podium
91-100: waits to see if the Owen offer materialises
57
The increasingly competitive Vanwall-Salvadori partnership soldiers on another season

Alan Stacey
1-65: accepts the more lucrative offer to continue as Owen first driver
66-90: takes the works O.S.C.A. reserve gig and a guaranteed Centro Sud drive
91-100: bides his time hoping for another drive to open up, potentially the first O.S.C.A. or Ferrari
15
Stacey takes on the challenge of carrying Owen closer and closer to the front for a third season

Wolfgang von Trips
1-75: pursues his burgeoning F1 career in the second Centro Sud car with occasional O.S.C.A. appearances
76-100: focuses on his Ferrari sportscar calendar
30
The German bounces back from being dropped by Ferrari and Lotus with another opportunity

Georges Burggraf
1-30: takes the third Voeckler seat alongside Simon and Trintignant
26-85: jumps across the Thames to the third Rob Walker seat
86-100: waits to see if the second Walker drive opens up
86
The Australian Grand Prix winner chooses to play the field for a little bit longer before committing

André Guelfi
1-45: takes the vacant Voeckler gig
46-90: remains with Centro Sud for a second season
91-100: turns to a life of business dealings
98
...yeah, this man just has no desire to remain in motorsport

Fernand Tavano
1-80: takes his first shot at F1 with both hands
81-100: realises his own limits and remains a sportscar stalwart
74
Voeckler's line-up is finally complete!

José Froilán González
1-30: takes up the second O.S.C.A. drive next to Ramos
31-35: prefers to plump for the third O.S.C.A. seat instead
36-55: remains at Rob Walker Racing for a second season
56-95: jumps into the now-vacant number one Ferrari
96-100: pulls out of full-time driving after finally taking his first Grand Prix win
27
González leaves O.S.C.A. with three confirmed drivers and Ferrari with a big gap still to fill

May I take control of Loonmotor too as they're still up for grabs? :deletraz:

The Long-Overdue 1959 Season Preview - Part One
I am on a train, returning from a week-long holiday in which I did absolutely no work on this series whatsoever. The perfect time to get the ball rolling again. The off-season has proven eventful, with plenty of movement between the top teams and an unfortunate dose of tragedy. The 1959 season will come with new tracks, new drivers and the looming threat of obsolescence for front-engined cars. Let's see how the contenders - big and small - shape up prior to the coming season.

Scuderia Ferrari
The Maranello squad were on top of the world just weeks ago, having secured all three championships with a race to spare. Their package was so good it will likely continue to be a contender this season given the current absence of any new top-tier machinery for 1959. Then, after the New Zealand Grand Prix, everything was set into motion. Incensed by his early engine failure, defending World Drivers' Champion Peter Collins abruptly left the team and found refuge replacing his dear friend Mike Hawthorn at Cooper. Enzo's attempt to secure González's services were unsuccessful, leaving the promising but young Jo Bonnier to take leadership. Will this allow him and his teammates to grow? Perennial midfielder Gerino Gerini and dutiful backup man Phil Hill certainly hope so.

The 1957 champions had a somewhat rougher time in 1958, winning just two races and facing trouble with unreliability. The drivers could not be said to have caused these issues, as even rookie John Surtees showed excellent pace and ultimately beat his triple-champion teammate Jack Brabham while Stirling Moss got the worst of the car trouble. They've managed to keep hold of all three drivers for 1959, paying 100 grand for the trouble, and if the cars hold up, they'll be right in the mix again.

The field's chief purveyors of top-line machinery struggled when it came to their works operation in 1958, faced with the death of Giulio Cabianca and a revolving door of usually disappointing drivers. The once surprising Ottorino Volonterio faded, Juan Manuel Fangio eased into retirement, and only late addition Hernando da Silva Ramos was able to bring forth any performance, with two wins that could easily have been four. They now start 1959 firmly on the right foot with Ramos signed on full-time alongside a José Froilán González at the top of his game and Graham Hill, who was unable to extract much from his Lotus last season. This strong line-up and renewed confidence should see them through the season.

Rob Walker Racing
The gallant private team was undoubtedly one of the most improved outfits in 1958, going from a single podium in 1957 to multiple top three finishes with González culminating in a victory at Sebring, soon doubled in the non-championship New Zealand Grand Prix. The Argentine has since moved on to O.S.C.A., suddenly leaving an opening at a potentially top team. Dan Gurney, who had been learning the ropes as second driver, preferred to stay there, allowing Connaught refugee Stuart Lewis-Evans to get what many think is a long-overdue shot at great results.

Scuderia Centro Sud
If there was another team that could lay claim to the title of most improved team of 1958, it was Guglielmo Dei's operation. Despite year-long struggles with unreliability, Ramos kick-started his dormant career with a second place in Reims, and André Guelfi stunned the Monza crowd with a shock second place of his own. Ramos moved on to O.S.C.A. halfway through the season and Guelfi has since retired from motorsport, leaving newly-signed O.S.C.A. reserve Wolfgang von Trips to take on lead duties. Consalvo Sanesi will prop him up.

The Long-Overdue 1959 Season Preview - Part Two
Team Lotus
Colin Chapman's mob were left in the unenviable position of being outpaced by a customer team after spending much of the season struggling with personnel. Troy Ruttman was sidelined halfway through the season, leaving a rotating cast of Ferrari reserves to fill in the gaps. Masten Gregory's podium in his only race for the team was a highlight, followed by a fourth place for von Trips and a 5-6 in Monza, with only one other finish all year. Hoping for more consistency this year, they secured the promising Gregory for the full season, but with other top drivers quickly snapped up, the second seat will be taken by Lex Davison in his first full season in half a decade.

Cooper Car Company
The Cooper T45 is a very fast car, this much was obvious, but a lack of reliability and general trouble getting the right setup for the car plagued the works squad's 1958. Despite Mike Hawthorn's best efforts, Luigi Musso and Cliff Allison weren't enough to properly develop the car enough to score more than 6 points. Then, in a devastating blow, Mike Hawthorn first retired from motorsport for health reasons then perished in a tragic road accident. Perhaps swayed by the death of his close friend, world champion Peter Collins retired from most other forms of motorsport, jumped ship from Ferrari and joined Cooper as the team's new spearhead, backed by the promising Bruce McLaren in his second season of F1.

Yet another team that improved significantly in 1958. Though Jack Fairman took the team's top result of fourth, he bore the brunt of the issues and largely lagged behind the younger Alan Stacey who arguably came close to victory at Zandvoort before dropping back to fifth. Stacey will continue to lead the team while Fairman returns to his tooling and is replaced by the now-healthy Troy Ruttman. Is this the year they finally score that first podium?

There are few men in the Formula 1 paddock who look like they want to be there less than Tony Vandervell. Up until the very last race of 1958, their then-pointless campaign only let the frustration pile up to the point where Tony announced he would withdraw from racing altogether if the luckless Roy Salvadori didn't score a podium. A tall ask. And yet, Salvadori proved up to the task, adding fastest lap for good measure. With a lack of new machinery and reduced personnel from top teams, it's not inconceivable their 1959 could be their best season yet, but they've got some work to get their motivation back.

Ecurie Voeckler
André Simon may have thought his two 1957 podiums were the start of a career revival, but Voeckler's expansionist ideals turned out to be a step too far. The three-prong assault only yielded two points, both courtesy of Simon, but this doesn't appear to have dampened any expectations. Both he and Trintignant have signed on for another year, but with Behra, Burggraf and Guelfi all turning down a drive, they're relying on rookie Fernand Tavano to back up the squad.

The Long-Overdue 1959 Season Preview - Part Three
British Racing Partnership
Alf Moss was rather hoping that the upturn in form his outfit showed in 1958 would finally tempt his son to join the squad. It was once again not so. Jim Russell eagerly signed on for another season, and replacing the one-off Tom Bridger in the second car will be the young hotshot Chris Bristow. Both drivers have very different approaches to driving, the first a multiple time F3 champion, the other having a reputation for extreme speed and recklessness alike. This could be one of the most interesting teammate battles this year.

Scuderia Ugolini
Although the highs of 1958 were higher than those of 1957 for Nello Ugolini's bunch, there was only one qualification versus a much more prolific previous season. Nonetheless, that solitary twelfth place seemed sufficient for Luigi Musso to return for an additional season with the squad, now focusing on his F1 commitments. It's hard to see where they can go from here with their disjointed arsenal of cars, but best of luck to them.

Connaught Engineering
Yet another team that suffered from mismanagement over the last couple of seasons, but a change in ownership over the off-season may provide the turnaround they need. Losing Stuart Lewis-Evans to Rob Walker was a major blow and they don't yet have a replacement lined up, but bigger comebacks have happened.

Honoré Wagner
Formula 1's first Luxembourgish driver had a reasonable 1958 considering, with one start and finish, but there is a reasonable amount of room for improvement. He still has a few races this year within his budget, but it will likely depend on which machinery he can rent for the occasion.

Ecurie Maarsbergen
Carel Godin de Beaufort took his next few steps into team ownership last year with little improvement on his 1957 efforts, albeit more successfully than most other owner-driver outfits. Continuing the progress this season, they have dedicated a budget to the year and acquired the services of Rob Slotemaker. The Dutch driver will surely be happy to drive a car that's not powered by a Loonmotor engine for the first time!

Reg Parnell Racing
This man does not know when to give up. Despite age catching up to him and his increasing commitments as Aston Martin team director, he stills insists on driving his own cars and at this point, his entries are losing money hand over fist. This year he's sticking to the UK rounds, and one has to imagine he'll finally get the picture and hire someone else to give it a shot.

Automobiles Deutsch & Bonnet
The official DB factory team is nominally back for another year, even after entering just the one event in 1958. They spent the rest of the year loaning out their equipment to additional privateers with the explicit goal to generate enough cash for a new set of machinery, a move which may or may not pay dividends in 1959. They have no drivers yet, but that should follow relatively quickly.

David Fry
This Formula 2 project had a difficult start with reliability issues plaguing their 1958, but as they improve, they're making a bold play to integrate the F1 landscape as well. Development driver Mike Parkes will be spearheading their part-time campaign.

This Canadian outfit is attempting to be a pioneer in its country's scene by announcing an imminent entry in the United States Grand Prix. However, Al Pease turned down the opportunity as his career is just beginning, leaving them without a hired hand as of yet. They have plenty of time to get it sealed though, which would expand the reach of the championship without a doubt.

Team Lotus would like to bid for Olivier Gendebien for the third car, offering him the same $10,000 for the season as was previously on the table for him

EDIT: Team Lotus will put the following assets up for sale:
Lotus 10 - 2
OSCA 1558 - 10
OSCA 1558 - 11

We will consider any and all reasonable offers for the above assets. We will also consider offers for new Lotus 12 cars for any prospective customers, either on purchase or lease agreement

We will also be courting potential engine manufacturers to lease or purchase engines for 1959

Scuderia Ugolini will bring a revolutionary 4-wheel drive system to Formula One.

Image

To accomplish this, we will:
-Construct a second 158-1 engine.
-Modify O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 1 to house both engines as shown.

Sorry for taking so long, I have way too much going on these days.

To quote last season: "Budgeted teams will be able to reach Australia for a £20 000 round trip including the entry fee. In order to encourage the entry of local privateers, the owners of cars that are loaned to privateers for the Australian Grand Prix will not be liable to pay for transport to or from Bathurst."

None of my teams will enter this race but:
*Ecurie Maarsbergen is looking to buy a recent enough chassis+engine for their main car
*Decisions on a possible second car haven't been made and will depend on budget when the Dutch GP comes around

*David Fry will build a 20 000 chassis and is looking for an engine within their budget, preferrably British. (car is called F2)

Offers in PM or a PM/Tag in the discord.
