McLaren driver Mika Hakkinen will be forced to miss the majority of the rest of the 1993 Formula One season after suffering a heavy crash at the Canadian Grand Prix. The Finn went straight-on into the barriers at the final chicane, seemingly suffering a brake failure of sorts or otherwise losing control of his car and crashed into the wall at roughly 170mph. The Finn was extracted from his car and taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with two broken legs, meaning he will be unable to race again until the last races of this season if at all in 1993.

Former World Champion and current McLaren test driver Jérémy-Étienne Voeckler has been announced as Hakkinen's replacement until the Finn is able to return into the car, making his Formula One comeback after two years away from the sport.

After his second-place finish at the Canadian Grand Prix, rumors in the paddock about Johnny Herbert being signed up by a top team in the future are heating up.

Benetton Arrows have had an eye on Herbert even back in his days in British Formula Three, but now McLaren and Williams are looking to sign the 29-year old.

The French Grand Prix was largely marked by the battle between the two Williams drivers of Jack Christopherson and Chris Dagnall. The two Brits battled it out for over 10 laps, Christopherson frequently blocking and cutting off Dagnall in his attempts to defend from overtaking. The battle ended when Christopherson's engine expired, giving Dagnall a free hand at the win he eventually took. Clearly no love was lost between the two when Dagnall criticised Christopherson's driving in the post-race press conference and Christopherson responding with jibes regarding Dagnall's "arrogant" demeanour.

The battle between these two will be interesting to watch develop as the season unfolds. Chris Dagnall is 10 points ahead of Jack Christopherson in the World Driver's Championship after the French Grand Prix.

DOTR: Didier Artzet - safe drive to secure his first podium in F1
ROTR: Williams and Arrows - the top two teams collectively soiled the bed today, they should be embarrassed

The start mostly went fine, save for Voeckler the younger having a good getaway, moving up from 8th to 4th. Schumacher and Christopherson briefly tussled over 2nd place but the Brit got ahead and kept the German in his wing mirrors. At the beginning of Lap 2, Sophie Fabron spun off at Copse and crashed out. The Frenchwoman was thankfully unhurt but the incident will not serve to help enforce her shaky presence at the team.

The first part of the race saw a rather dramatic defence put on by Frederic-Maxime Voeckler, the Ferrari driver holding off his brother's McLaren and Paul Tracy's Arrows for fourth, with their pace slow enough that Gerhard Berger in the other McLaren could catch up and make it a large four-car battle. The Voeckler siblings were frequently side-by-side but the Ferrari frequently cut the McLaren off, the 1988 world champion gesticulating quite wildly at his brother to show his disapproval. Of course, he didn't let Paul Tracy have a chance of overtaking him either, and the Canadian aggressively defended against Berger behind him. None of them gave each other any chance and it was glorious.

Then, the Ferrari pitted early, once again the team choosing to run Voeckler's car light with some vain hope of gaining position, a strategy which has so far not yielded any significant results. Berger pitted at the same time and Tracy pitted 2 laps later. This meant JEV, on a one-stop strategy, could finally get some clean ait and pace himself from the others. He was helped by Berger and Tracy getting stuck by the Larrousse of Didier Artzet, also on a one-stop, after coming out of the pits and FMV being ultimately unable to hold any form of pace and ending up by the Sauber cars.

Up front, Christopherson was slowly catching Dagnall but while pushing, went off at Club. When attempting to rejoin the track, he spun the car and the left rear wheel smacked the wall, meaning the car was unable to continue. He stormed away from the car, pushing the marshals away from him while heading back to the pits in a fit of rage. Dagnall was initially unchallenged for the lead but a mere lap later, smoke started pouring out of the back of his FW15C. He had to stop the car and a dominant victory up until that point had been scuppered. However Dagnall was not too displeased, probably with the knowledge that Christopherson was unable to gain on him in the driver's championship. This put Schumacher in the lead, with a large gap to JEV in 2nd, thus the German could cruise to his third grand prix victory.

JEV pitted on Lap 27 and as suspected, came out comfortably in front of teammate Berger. Tracy spun at Luffield while attempting to challenge the Austrian and was thus considered not to be a threat to the McLarens anymore - compounded by his engine failing a lap after the spin. The race was therefore set at this point - Schumacher in front, the McLaren pairing in 2nd and 3rd.

Or was it? Fate, as it turns out, had different ideas. On Lap 60, despite being over 30 seconds out front, Schumacher's car stopped, denying him the chance of victory. This therefore meant that Jeremy-Etienne Voeckler crossed the finish line in first place for the first time in over three years. His teammate Gerhard Berger in second gave McLaren their first 1-2 finish of the year. Meanwhile there was celebration in the Larrousse camp as Didier Artzet crossed the line in third, securing his first career podium. FMV was fourth, receiving stern words from his brother after the race's conclusion in regards to his defensive driving earlier. The Saubers of Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Mika Salo crossed the line in 5th and 6th, a quietly good day for the new Swiss squad.

Robby Gordon to make F1 debut at struggling French team

Footwork Team Oreca has secured the services of IndyCar ace Robby Gordon. The young Californian is currently driving in his first full season of IndyCar racing with AJ Foyt Enterprises, and will be dovetailing the latter half of the Formula One season with his existing commitments. He will manage five races, missing only two of the remaining rounds for which he will be covered by the team's reserve drivers.

"It's a very exciting opportunity to get a taste of Formula One", said Gordon; "If there's a team here that would take a chance on Paul Tracy, then there's probably a top team that will take a chance on me for next year."

DOTR: Gerhard Berger - calm drive to secure victory in the midst of chaos elsewhere
ROTR: Williams - what an absolute clown show on behalf of their drivers

Medical report:
Driver of Footwork Team Oreca car #18 Neil McEwan suffered a concussion as a result of his crash on Lap 5 and as such will have to miss the Italian Grand Prix.

Steward's report:
Driver of Footwork Team Oreca car #18 Neil McEwan has been awarded with a suspended race ban in light of his collision with Team Lotus car #11 Rubens Barrichello on Lap 2 which put the latter out of the race.

Driver of Team Sauber F1 car #29 Heinz-Harald Frentzen has been disqualified from the final results of the Belgian Grand Prix and is banned from the Italian Grand Prix as a result of his collision with Scuderia Ferrari car #28 Frédéric-Maxime Voeckler which put the latter out of the race.

The start of the race was filled with crashes - McEwan bashing Barrichello, Frentzen volleying Voeckler and whatever the hell happened on Lap 5 (Donnelly collided into Artzet and McEwan piled straight into the wreckage). At the front the Williams cars were initially driving off into the distance, Dagnall in front of Christopherson, however the drivers had other ideas...

Dagnall ripped his front wing off and had to pit in, dropping back down to 7th. He quickly got back up to 6th, overtaking Herbert and then Schumacher spun off at the Bus Stop - the German was able to continue but had to pit for a new front and rear wing. The Brit was pounding round the track - clawing his way up to 2nd, around a second behind his teammate.

Then, disaster. Dagnall went off at Stavelot and crashed, putting him out of the race. This in theory gave Christopherson a free run at the win - but the other Williams smacked the kerbs exiting the Bus Stop and lost his front wing. He had to pit and was back down to 3rd. He caught up to the McLaren of Berger and the Arrows of Tracy who were battling for the lead but the Williams went off and the Brit eventually finished 5th - being overtaken by the other McLaren and Arrows cars.

Berger meanwhile maintained a gap ahead of Tracy and cruised to his 2nd victory of the season - Tracy behind in 2nd was on the podium for the first time since Imola and Voeckler was 3rd, just about fending off Schumacher's Arrows. Johnny Herbert claimed another point for Larrousse in 6th.

According to an unnamed source, the disastrous driver errors by the Williams drivers led to a very heated team meeting involving Patrick Head, Jack Christopherson and Chris Dagnall in which Dagnall was informed his contract with the team will not be extended.

However, while Jack Christopherson has a contract until 1995, his position in the team is not safe. When Frank Williams hired him, he was expecting Christopherson to rise to world champion level within a year, expectations the six-time winner has not fulfilled yet.

Race

DOTR: Martin Donnelly - utterly brilliant (before his car exploded)
ROTR: Jack Christopherson - utterly disastrous (despite being easily the fastest man on track all weekend)

This weekend should've been Jack Christopherson's. With Frank WIlliams publicly casting doubt on his position at the team going forward, as well as constant doubt over his ability and mental state, the Brit needed a dashing performance to potentially rescue his F1 career going forward. He took pole position from teammate Dagnall, and set the fastest lap in the race very early on. So what went wrong?

It started on Turn 1. Jack tried to cut off a fast-starting Gerhard Berger under braking and got shoved onto the gravel. He also lost his front wing, meaning by the end of Lap 1, he was dead last. He came out of the pitlane and was immediately on the pace, setting the fastest lap (that stood throughout the race) and was clearly on a charge. That ended on Lap 4, when the Brit lost control of his car negotiating the Parabolica curve and hit the wall, ending his day. He dejectedly lumbered towards the pits, evidently in an utterly broken state over the lost win that should've been his.

This gave teammate Dagnall a free run at the race win, which he took. Elsewhere, Jordan's Martin Donnelly drove an excellent race, getting a good start and masterfully defending against Jérémy-Étienne Voeckler until his engine exploded. Michael Schumacher suffered an engine failure soon after Christopherson's crash, helping compound an increasingly hopeless year at Arrows. Teammate Paul Tracy was a relatively anonymous 2nd at the end of the race. Didier Artzet drove a solid race to end up 4th, Rubens Barrichello gave Lotus a strong 5th and Mark Blundell was due to give the team their first double points finish in 4 years, however he spun out at the Variante della Roggia on the last lap, handing it to Frédéric-Maxime Voeckler. Team boss Peter Collins was so furious he sacked Blundell on the spot.

Dagnall can secure the title at the next race at Estoril if he finishes 3rd or above regardless of what his teammate does. Christopherson needs to win the race and hope his teammate finishes off the podium to remain within championship contention. Dagnall's victory has guaranteed Williams the constructor's title for 1993.

Image
DOTR: Eric van de Poele - 4th on your return after 2 years in a firmly midfield car is a good showing
ROTR: Williams/McLaren - all four drivers crashed out, embarrassing

The start of the race was a relatively calm affair, giving a false impression for the rest of the race. That all changed on Lap 3. Dagnall crashed out of the lead, followed by Berger doing the same. This left the other Williams of Christopherson and McLaren of Voeckler - at his last race for the team this year - dicing for the lead.

They were fighting hard, until Christopherson decided to chop Voeckler off at Turn 1 with predictable consequences - both cars tumbled into the gravel and out of the race. The Frenchman was none too pleased and had stern words with both Christopherson and the Williams pitwall - Patrick Head shooing him away. Arrows inherited a 1-2 lead but Paul Tracy late in the race had other ideas - binning the car and retiring from the race.

At the end of the race Michael Schumacher took his second win of the season, with Jean Alesi behind in 2nd a whole lap down, taking Ferrari's best result of the season. Heinz-Harald Frentzen, back after his race ban at Monza, was 3rd, taking his and Sauber's first ever podium. Behind them, Eric van de Poele took his first points in his first race at Lotus in 4th, Johnny Herbert was in 5th and the other Ferrari of Voeckler was 6th.

Amusingly, despite crashing out, Dagnall was confirmed as world champion after the race. The same is true of Williams, who secured the constructor's title despite a double DNF.

Official Formula 1 Race Programme, 1993 Portuguese Grand Prix wrote:1993-94 Off-Season Predictions
by Bill Wuxton

In my position as official Formula 1 Race Programme Editor, I spend a lot of time in and around the paddock, and that means I get to hear all of the best and juiciest rumours that are flying around the paddock. As the one journalist who is officially and openly in the employ of the sport I purport to serve, this means I am better placed than all those other scrubs to give you the inside scoop on how the grid might line up for next year.

Williams
The new World Champions have had a remarkably weird season all things considered. Despite an absolutely dominant season, they have had nothing but problems from their two superstar drivers and as a result, Sir Frank Williams will be looking to make a change. Two of the hottest properties on the grid right now are Michael Schumacher, who has impressed hugely with Arrows this season, and 1986 World Champion Jeremy-Etienne Voeckler, whose career hit a resurgence with his substitute appearance at McLaren.

McLaren
The quiet achievers this season, McLaren have kept their noses down and worked hard - as a result, they seem sure to take second in the Constructors Championship. Any personnel change seems unlikely: Gerhard Berger has a job at McLaren until he doesn't want one anymore, and Mika Hakkinen is quite clearly Ron Dennis's chosen successor for him.

Arrows
The embattled Benetton Arrows team has been the second-fastest on the grid, but it has had numerous run-ins with the FIA itself. As a result of this, Michael Schumacher will likely be on his way out to bigger and better things, but Paul Tracy seems likely to carry on at his spiritual home. He might be joined by talented German Beau Brandenburg or perhaps young British ace Johnny Herbert, but unconfirmed rumours suggest that Neil McEwan has had discussions with Arrows.

Larrousse
The grid's best-run French team, Larrousse has carried the favour of FIA President Jean-Marie Balestre. Its driver pairing of Johnny Herbert and Didier Artzet is young and talented, and if they can stop those drivers being poached by other high-rolling teams then they'd be fools to change them for next year.

Ferrari
The Scuderia demands success, and the Alesi-Voeckler pairing has delivered them fifth place in the World Championship. One or both of them has to go - one expects that one of the Williams drivers, perhaps Dagnall, will land himself here, bringing the number 1 with him. It seems like a prize that Ferrari would most certainly go out and buy for the year, even if they can't earn it on the track.

Sauber
The new Swiss outfit has done an admirable job with its driver pairing of Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Mika Salo, running Ferrari close for fifth place in the Championship. Salo has been the less impressive of the two though, and if Frentzen sticks with the outfit, he could find himself with a new team-mate. Bernd Schneider, fresh off a stellar season with Rial, could be a strong candidate, as could the impressive Christian Fittipaldi.

Lotus
The famous British team has hit hard times, and recently lost patience with driver Mark Blundell. His replacement Eric van de Poele immediately arrived with a stellar P4 that should absolutely secure his drive for 1994, but will they be able to keep Rubens Barrichello? They may not even want to if Jack Christopherson becomes available - there's nothing quite like a fast, race-winning British driver to raise spirits at Lotus.

Jordan
Everyone's second-favourite Formula One team, they could also be courting the services of Jack Christopherson next year - but only if they want to part ways with either of Martin Donnelly or Eddie Irvine. The Ulster duo have been occasionally excellent, but the team remains stuck in a weird spot just behind the midfield but definitely not one of the backmarkers.

Rial
The plucky German outfit simply refuses to die, and an excellent P6 from Bernd Schneider ensures that they should get to drive for another year. That self-same P6 may make them lose their star driver though, as it puts a target on his back for the big teams. If a replacement is needed, then one suspects that it could be any one of Michael Bartels, Michael Krumm or Sascha Maassen. Or indeed Roland Ratzenburger if he's looking to move to a new team.

Tyrrell
The once-great British team finds itself pointless again and propping up all of the reputable teams. Christian Fittipaldi and Ukyo Katayama have both done well, but they may be looking to find employ at a ship that is a little less... sinking. If they do lose either of their drivers, then this could be a real wildcard in the driver market - will wily Ken choose a young talent like Mark Skaife, Beau Brandenburg or Pedro Lamy, or will he instead try to lure in a big name like Chris Dagnall?

Oreca
It's been a real revolving door at Oreca this year. The team has gone through no fewer than five drivers this season, and of them only one is apparently guaranteed a spot at the team next year: Neil McEwan, who delivered the team's best finish of 7th at Autopolis. There are rumours that Footwork, the team's title sponsors, are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the team's lack of success, so a Japanese driver may well appease them. Perhaps Kazuki Fushida, Ukyo Katayama or Hideki Noda will comprise the team's short-list.

Minardi
The excellent Michele Alboreto has dragged the Minardi off the foot of the Championship table this season, but how much longer will he want to hang around the back of the field? But if not him then who? Perhaps the enthusiastic American Robby Gordon could find a home here, or Lotus Test driver Damon Hill.

Scuderia Italia
... at this point, will they even be employing drivers next season? The team is rooted at the foot of the World Championship table, and with the fallout of the "clean hands" investigation coming home to roost, team owners may decide that it is better for the team's finances to switch focus away from the world's most expensive motorsport.

New Teams?
There are also rumours of two or three new teams looking to make the step up to Formula One for the 1994 season. Chief among them are F3000 outfit Pacific Grand Prix, chassis manufacturer Simtek and former F1 driver Nigel Mansell with a new team of his very own. If this proves to be the case, then the experience (and funding) of Sophie Fabron could be useful for either of these teams, while the likes of Paul Belmondo, Jean-Denis Deletraz and Olivier Beretta have all been tied to these seats. But then again, what about a second chance for Mark Blundell?

As always, the F1 silly season is nothing if not silly - and these predictions could most certainly prove to be well wide of the mark. That said, the official Formula 1 Race Programme's predicted grid for 1994 is:

Ferrari - 1 / Dagnall & 2 / Alesi
Tyrrell - 3 / Katayama & 4 / Brandenburg
McLaren - 5 / Berger & 6 / Hakkinen
Oreca - 9 / McEwan & 10 / Fushida
Lotus - 11 / Christopherson & 12 / van de Poele
Jordan - 14 / Donnelly & 15 / Irvine
Arrows - 16 / Tracy & 17 / Herbert
Larrousse - 18 / Alesi & 19 / Artzet
Minardi - 22 / Giovinardi & 23 / Hill
Rial - 24 / Schneider & 25 / Wendlinger
Williams - 27 / Schumacher & 28 / J-E. Voeckler
Sauber - 29 / Frentzen & 30 / Fittipaldi
Simtek - 31 / Blundell & 32 / Ratzenburger
Pacific - 33 / Fabron & 34 / Blundell

Footwork Team Oreca statement wrote:Oreca is the first team to announce its 1994 driver line-up

Footwork Team Oreca has announced its complete 1994 driver line-up with two rounds of its 1993 campaign still to run.

"We can today confirm that we have reached agreements with all relevant parties, and so there is nothing stopping us from announcing a strong driver line-up for the coming season. Firstly, we can confirm that Neil McEwan will be staying on for another year after his excellent debut season; while he has attracted some unfair criticism from the a few corners of the press, we are very impressed with his performances and hope he can continue to improve.

"Secondly, we announce as our second race driver Kazuki Fushida: he brings in a tremendous wealth of experience that the team desperately needs, not to mention a proven ability to score World Championship points - including for Coloni in 1987. They will be supported by France's Mike Boullier as Test and Reserve Driver.

"Jérôme and Alessandro do retain the option to stay with the team as Test and Reserve Drivers, but they wish to explore every avenue for race seats in the coming season before they commit to that. As for Robby, we wish him the best of luck in finding a team that better suits his stated objective to continue both living and racing in the United States whilst maintaining a near full-time F1 race schedule. Unfortunately, Oreca cannot continue to be that team."

AutoMobile News wrote:AutoMobile issues second apology for inaccurate Jawhard story

The offending article has since been the subject of multiple lawsuits.

Former AutoMobile Grand Prix Editor Sue Jawhard suffered another defeat in court this weekend pertaining to her controversial and ultimately inaccurate reporting on the Ukyo Katayama horror crash in 1991. In the article, Jawhard not only reported incorrectly that Katayama had lost his life in the accident, but also started the "Murderer McEwan" nickname that has stuck to the British driver ever since.

In his testimony, McEwan explained to the court that the "Murderer" misnomer had followed him for years since, being repeated every time he was involved in a racing incident, whether or not it was his fault. He also cited examples in which the story and its fallout have negatively affected his career; firstly when his discussions with an unnamed Formula One team fell through when he was told that they had no interest in dangerous drivers, and when he was blamed and reprimanded for what many observers considered to be a racing incident in which he himself ended up sustaining an injury.

McEwan has been granted damages to compensate for possible earnings lost as a result of this defamatory reporting, and has received a full and unreserved apology from AutoMobile News.

ROTR: McLaren - double retirement brings Arrows back into contention for 2nd in the WCC

Fairly uneventful race - Dagnall got the jump on Christopherson at the start and left him behind until the latter's suspension packed in fairly early on. Elsewhere Michael Schumacher was pushed onto the grass by the returning Mika Hakkinen at the start and spun between Turns 1 and 2 - the German was lucky to keep going and not to lose too much ground.

The rest of the race was mostly one of attrition - various cars dropping out to produce the final results. Dagnall took his eighth victory of the season, with the Arrows cars of Tracy and Schumacher in 2nd and 3rd - Arrows' first double podium since Imola. Mika Salo scored a career-best fourth with teammate Frentzen in sixth - Martin Donnelly splitting the two Sauber cars.

DOTR: Martin Donnelly - a solid drive to 5th place
ROTR: Paul Tracy - binned it on his own and cost his team 2nd in the constructor's

Dagnall took pole at the final race of the season, although he dropped back down to 3rd as Christopherson and Hakkinen overtook the newly minted world champion. Further back, Roland Ratzenberger was pushed into the wall at Turn 1 and was taken out on the spot.

A few laps later though, Paul Tracy lost control of his car and hit the wall, taking him out of the race. This would have fairly significant repercussions. As the race progressed, Hakkinen and Schumacher tussled over 2nd place until 9 laps from the end. Robby Gordon and Bernd Schneider crashed into one another and although the German was able to avoid the wreckage, the Finn was not and was taken out of the race. This guaranteed Schumacher 2nd and Dagnall 3rd.

This would've given Arrows enough points to secure 2nd in the constructors, however Gerhard Berger in the other McLaren finished 4th. This put both teams on 81 points, however due to McLaren having an extra win (3 v 2 for Arrows) they finished ahead. Donnelly and Frentzen rounded out the points, Sauber just missing out on leapfrogging the fumbling Ferrari for fifth.

That is the season over. Final standings are available here. In the meantime I'll sort out the Indoor Trophy before opening up the 1994 thread and allowing the action to continue.
