It’s been a while.

After a couple of years where work got more of my attention and running these races took more and more time, this series went on an unannounced hiatus. The forum outage didn’t help, nor did some issues with deteriorating mental health. And yet, the forum bounced back, and I found myself with four months of gardening leave in which I could work on some projects. So I refreshed my VBA skills and bodged together a way to automate these races and make the whole thing smoother.

Now that all I have to do is put one number in rather than painstakingly format everything and edit the post, this should take up less of my time.

Core game mechanics are currently unchanged, though this could eventually be amended as my free time and creativity continue to evolve in the coming months. I’m especially thinking of including modifiers for front vs rear-engined cars, as well as grip-limited vs power-limited circuits. The “in the news” and “currently winning elsewhere” segments will sadly be significantly reduced (if not completely cut) as they took up a lot of my time.

Aside from all that, we have a lot to catch up on. First things first: who’s coming back, and who are they taking on?

My focus will be on:

Will also continue the quest to have Honoré Wagner carney himself to greatness after the encouragement of him qualifying for the Belgian GP last year

I'll keep Reg Parnell racing 'existing' for now, but that team doesn't have much life in it.

I will also make Ecurie Maarsbergen a proper privateer.

My plan is really to just take on a few smaller teams that don't have a long lifespan (genre LDS, Gilby, Ferguson, Scirocco, etc.) for a while until Matra becomes available some day. I will start this plan with running the Fry team.

Good to see you back Tommy!

I would like to inquire about Carroll Shelby running a part-time team after a decent performance at the end of last season, and perhaps the odd one-off entry or three across the season. I do hope to get control of Eagle in the future, but that is a long ways off.

I confirm that The British Empire Motor Club of Toronto, Canada, has acquired the lotus chassis #6 and Ferrari DS50 engines from John Brian Taylor for the total sum of $40,000, as agreed with Mr. Taylor. As such, the club plan to enter its ace driver, Al Pease, jnto the season-ending United States Grand Prix, at Sebring, in Florida.

Of course we don't know whether the lineups will stay for the 1959 season proper, but it's worth trying!

January 9th 1959 - New Zealand Grand Prix qualifying

Those two months sure felt like two years, didn't they? Oh well, we've got a Grand Prix to get to. This non-championship race with reduced purse hasn't attracted that big an entry list, but that hasn't stopped some big teams from making the trip out of principle. Locals have also decided to leave this one be, preferring the Formula Libre event held on the same day. Nonetheless, 15 drivers have appeared and all will therefore start the race. The only stakes here are bragging rights and an advantage for tomorrow's race.

  • Jim Russell and British Racing Partnership didn't have the best experience in 1958 despite making the grid more often than not. This is a good opportunity for them to kick start the new year.
  • Chan Lye Choon first tasted Formula 1 at the 1955 Singapore Grand Prix, but now he's won the Macau Grand Prix, he's hoping to have a second bite in this lower-scope event. This time, he's got an old B.C.M.A. and a newer O.S.C.A. engine to help.
  • Scuderia Centro Sud had a great season in 1958, capped with two podiums from Hernando da Silva Ramos and André Guelfi. Both of them are present in Ardmore, albeit Guelfi in the underpowered Ugolini machine. Instead, the second Centro Sud entry is entrusted to Consalvo Sanesi, the former title contender who is slowly switching his attentions to GT racing.
  • Reg Parnell is another man who's seen better days. Now 47 years old, he's finally accepted that his affiliation with Maserati is unlikely to lead anywhere and put his eggs in the Cooper T45 basket. With a small entry list, this is a safe place for him to have a good time and consider his options for the coming season.
  • Both Rob Walker and José Froilán González are still jubilant from their long-awaited first victory at Sebring, a triumph they hope to repeat here. To acquire some more experience, Walker has also brought Dan Gurney along in an older O.S.C.A..
  • Alfred Owen also had a successful 1958, scoring a handful of points with Jack Fairman and Alan Stacey. While Fairman is taking some time with his tooling business, Stacey will be there in the usual B.C.M.A..
  • Ferrari is of course the biggest threat here, with a change of trackside management over the off-season. Newly-crowned champion Peter Collins is the obvious favourite this weekend, with Umberto Maglioli and Phil Hill in tow. Local hero Ross Jensen will be the sole Kiwi on the grid, with an older model under him.
  • While neither Lotus nor B.C.M.A. works cars will be in attendance, Australian Stan Jones was able to convince both Colin Chapman and the British government to provide him with a chassis and engine respectively. Suddenly he has a real chance to ruffle some feathers in by far the most competitive car he's had.
  • Tony Vandervell was making it known that he'd likely pull out of F1 if Salvadori did not score a podium at Sebring. When a third place was duly scored, plans changed and the team took their car through the Panama Canal and towards Auckland. Can they carry the momentum into 1959?

I've got a busy week ahead of me so can't guarantee when it'll happen, but it's happening.

Collins, the overwhelming favourite, wasn't able to leave the pits for qualifying until the dying moments. Yet, he still found enough to slot into second place behind González, who set a monstrous lap to take a close-fought pole position. Salvadori was also able to pull out some impressive pace to secure a second row start for Vanwall (ahead of works Ferraris among others). Despite being trusted with the best machinery the United Kingdom has to offer, Stan Jones can only make it to 12th position, presumably a byproduct of lacking the expertise required to effectively assemble the car.

January 10th 1959 - New Zealand Grand Prix

Pole-sitter González may have had a good enough start to lead into the first corner and at the end of the first lap, but his early pace was not enough to keep it for long. Defending champion Peter Collins soon made a clean move for the lead, but seemed unable to pull away for long. González barged his way past on lap 7 despite pressure behind from Maglioli, but with a fast-starting Dan Gurney hounding the Italian, González was clear... for three laps, until Peter Collins set the fastest lap of the race on lap 10 taking back the lead.

The early pace of the leaders contrasted with a chaotic scene in the midfield, as an unfamiliarity with the track led to some unwillingness to overtake for some drivers. Reg Parnell had no such qualms, soon reaching fifth position, but his strong start was sadly squandered by a gearbox failure. Stan Jones, struggling to adapt to his first taste in top-class machinery, soon followed suit. His engine had been showing smoke, and he pulled into the pits after falling to last place behind André Guelfi, whose F3-adjacent car quickly gave up as well.

By this point, Collins was losing pace lap after lap. González had taken back the lead a second time on lap 14, far more easily this time. The cause soon became apparent, as Collins' car broke down shortly thereafter with several dead cylinders. Ferrari's issues were compounded when Ross Jensen's 801 has a suspension fail on the same lap out of ninth place. Jim Russell, recovering from an early spin, passed Chan Lye Choon for what was now that ninth place. An unlucky position it turns out, as Russell soon lost control of his Cooper and wound up stranded in the grass next to the airfield. After 20 laps, González led the steadily climbing Phil Hill, with Dan Gurney holding on in third. Roy Salvadori, Consalvo Sanesi and Umberto Maglioli closed the top six, at the top of a close-fought midfield.

That midfield allowed Hill to pull away in second and was steadily reeling in González's lead, up until lap 26, when a third Ferrari race was unfortunately ended, this time with a gearbox issue. Maranello's hopes now rested on Maglioli, who was now at the forefront of the midfield fight in third place behind only the Rob Walker 1-2 of González and Gurney. As Stacey and Sanesi scrapped over sixth place of eight remaining cars, Maglioli now had to defend from Roy Salvadori's Vanwall, with Ramos hanging back waiting for the battle to develop.

In his inexperience, Gurney struggled to keep up the pace and eventually lost second place to Salvadori on lap 36. Maglioli wasn't there to take advantage of this though, having been caught and passed by Ramos. Sanesi slowly joined the scrap himself, while Alan Stacey slowly fell back and eventually pulled into the pits with electrical gremlins.

Salvadori was certainly competitve, but not enough to build a gap to third place and certainly not enough to put a dent in González's ballooning lead. Indeed, despite a valiant effort, he relinquished second place to Gurney with 30 laps remaining. A few laps later, a frustrated Ramos made it past both of these guys, sick of having lost so much time in these battles all race. He'd had González's pace the whole time, but once he'd reached the front and seen that the Argentine was almost two laps up the road, the motivation faded. Salvadori's clutch started to stick, putting an end to an impressive race for the Brit, and Gurney immediately took back that second place.

This led to a no-holds-barred battle for second place between the four remaining contenders: Gurney, Ramos, Sanesi and Maglioli. Chan Lye Choon was also still in the race, but too far behind to capitalise or ever catch up, and he'd eventually also retire with a driveshaft failure. Gurney led the way while the rest jockeyed for position, and once Maglioli had come out on top, he soon got his Ferrari past Gurney's O.S.C.A.. Sanesi had also fallen back a bit further, leaving the positions static for the last few laps... that is, until Ramos slowly reeled in Gurney. With three laps remaining, he'd made the move stick, but Gurney was able to counterattack and secure third place.

González secured his second win in as many races, with Maglioli salvaging a second place for Ferrari. Gurney's third place is his best so far, while Ramos will be frustrated with fourth place after demonstrating good pace. Sanesi brought his car home in one piece, having at least recovered from a poor start to race as high as fourth.
