Bleu, I pretty much agree with all that, although I wonder if Palmer and Hulkenberg would be that way round or not. I know the incumbent driver typically gets the smaller number within the team, but Hulk is the driver with so much more potential...

I'm a whole Grand Prix behind with this!

2017 Spanish Grand Prix

Code: Select all

 1 Lewis Hamilton   25 x 44 = 1100
 8 Pascal Wehrlein   4 x 94 =  376
 7 Carlos Sainz      6 x 55 =  330
 5 Esteban Ocon     10 x 31 =  310
 6 Nico Hulkenberg   8 x 27 =  216
 4 Sergio Perez     12 x 11 =  132
 2 Sebastian Vettel 18 x  5 =   90
 9 Daniil Kvyat      2 x 26 =   52
 3 Daniel Ricciardo 15 x  3 =   45
10 Romain Grosjean   1 x  8 =    8

Wehrlein becomes the driver with the largest car number to score for quite some time.

WDC

Code: Select all

 3 Valtteri Bottas   63 x 77 = 4851
 2 Lewis Hamilton    98 x 44 = 4312
 6 Max Verstappen    35 x 33 = 1155
10 Carlos Sainz      17 x 55 =  935
 8 Esteban Ocon      19 x 31 =  589
 1 Sebastian Vettel 104 x  5 =  520
11 Nico Hulkenberg   14 x 27 =  378
13 Pascal Wehrlein    4 x 94 =  376
 7 Sergio Perez      34 x 11 =  374
 4 Kimi Raikkonen    49 x  7 =  343
 9 Felipe Massa      18 x 19 =  342

Code: Select all

 5 Daniel Ricciardo  37 x  3 =  111
15 Daniil Kvyat       4 x 26 =  104
14 Kevin Magnussen    4 x 20 =   80
12 Romain Grosjean    5 x  8 =   40

Very competitive currently between Hulkenberg, Wehrlein, Perez, Raikkonen, and Massa.

WCC

Code: Select all

Mercedes    4851 + 4312 = 9163
Red Bull    1155 +  111 = 1266

Re: Jules Bianchi car number alt. championship

Post by dr-baker »

So I was wondering, what if the teams had permanent numbers rather than the drivers? Kinda like the 1974-1995 system, but rather than the world champion team swapping numbers with the next world champion team, they reverted back to their previous numbers. (I still think it strange to have seen both Williams and McLaren ran numbers 27 and 28 at some point in the 1980s!).

So what numbers would each team run with if they did have permanent numbers? Ferrari are already synonymous with 27 and 28 from the 1980s, and I still associate Williams with 5 and 6, and McLaren with 7 and 8.

Code: Select all

Williams     5,  6
McLaren      7,  8
Ferrari     27, 28

Assuming that the numbers that teams used in the 1974-1995 era are the numbers the teams are most closely associated with, Renault would thus be associated with the numbers 15 and 16, while Sauber would have 29 and 30 (Sauber at least have had a more continuous history in the sport, but Renault could definitely be said to be a continuation of the 1970s/1980s team, despite being a rival of Team Enstone then, back in the day).

Code: Select all

Williams     5,  6
McLaren      7,  8
Renault     15, 16
Ferrari     27, 28
Sauber      29, 30

Toro Rosso are a direct continuation of Minardi, and Minardi had numbers 23 and 24. Force India is a continuation of what was then Jordan in that era. Jordan ran numbers 32 and 33 for two years, then used the numbers 14 and 15 from 1993-1995. As I have already given 15 to Renault, I would give Force India 32 and 33.

Code: Select all

Williams     5,  6
McLaren      7,  8
Renault     15, 16
Toro Rosso  23, 24
Ferrari     27, 28
Sauber      29, 30
Force India 32, 33

Mercedes did not compete in that era except as engine supplier to Sauber, and we can't give then Sauber's numbers. Numbers changed from GP to GP in Mercedes's first F1 stint, and have had variable numbers since their 2010 return. So... current Mercedes were formally Brawn, who were Honda, who were BAR, who were Tyrrell.... Let's give them Tyrrell's numbers, 3 and 4!

Code: Select all

Mercedes     3,  4
Williams     5,  6
McLaren      7,  8
Renault     15, 16
Toro Rosso  23, 24
Ferrari     27, 28
Sauber      29, 30
Force India 32, 33

So that's 8 of the current 10 teams. Haas were a brand new team for the 2016 season, so have absolutely no history of cur numbers in F1 history. Unless I troll them with Beatrice Haas Lola's numbers? But Beatrice/Haas/Lola only ever used numbers 15, 16, and 33, and I have already allocated all three numbers to other teams. In NASCAR, Haas (aka Stewart-Haas) are associated with the numbers 4, 10, 14, and 41. Of those, only 4 has been taken. But all the other teams so far have pairs of consecutive integers. Let's come back to Haas.

Red Bull equally only have a history that goes back as far as Stewart Ford in 1997. They started with 22 and 23, then 18 and 19, and finally 16 and 17 for their first GP win. Jaguar too rarely ran with the same numbers for more than one season in a row.

I'll decide on what numbers would be appropriate for Haas and Red Bull at a later date, then if I have a couple of hours to spare, I'll allocate drivers to the numbers and see what that does for this year's title. (I'll still insist on the World Champion driver to use number 1 and his teammate to use 2, and that team would revert to their previous numbers again a year later, rather than continuously swapping with whichever team had the champion driver the following year.)

Code: Select all

(Champion driver and his teammate) 1,2
Mercedes     3,  4
Williams     5,  6
McLaren      7,  8
Renault     15, 16
Toro Rosso  23, 24
Ferrari     27, 28
Sauber      29, 30
Force India 32, 33

Toro Rosso   1595 +  104 =  1699
Ferrari       885 +  686 =  1571
Williams      437 +  324 =   761

This alternative championship is really emphasising the dire situation that McLaren find themselves in!

 4 Lewis Hamilton     12 x 44 =  528
 5 Max Verstappen     10 x 33 =  330

 6 Fernando Alonso     8 x 14 =  112
 9 Esteban Ocon        2 x 31 =   62
 8 Sergio Perez        4 x 11 =   44
10 Stoffel Vandoorne   1 x  2 =    2
Look at the points difference between stablemates Sainz and Verstappen! And between Vettel and Raikkonen!

WDC

Code: Select all

 3 Valtteri Bottas  169 x 77 = 13013
 2 Lewis Hamilton   188 x 44 =  8272

 8 Esteban Ocon      45 x 31 =  1395
 1 Sebastian Vettel 202 x  5 =  1010

10 Nico Hulkenberg   26 x 27 =   702
 7 Sergio Perez      56 x 11 =   616
16 Pascal Wehrlein    5 x 94 =   470
11 Felipe Massa      23 x 19 =   437
 4 Daniel Ricciardo 117 x  3 =   351
12 Lance Stroll      18 x 18 =   324
14 Kevin Magnussen   11 x 20 =   220
13 Romain Grosjean   18 x  8 =   144
15 Fernando Alonso   10 x 14 =   140
17 Daniil Kvyat       4 x 26 =   104
18 Stoffel Vandoorne  1 x  2 =     2

Not often that you see drivers in this championship with single-digit points total, especially as small as Vandoorne. Even Lella Lombardi ended up with 5 points in this championship! However, with McLaren scoring a double-points finish today, it may be that this is not Vandoorne's final points total?

WCC

Code: Select all

Mercedes    13013 + 8272 = 21285
Red Bull     2211 +  351 =  2562
Toro Rosso   1925 +  104 =  2029
Force India  1395 +  616 =  2011
Ferrari      1010 +  812 =  1822
Williams      437 +  324 =   761
Renault       702        =   702
Sauber        470        =   470

I looked up recent seasons to find out if anybody had a points score in this alternative championship as low as Vandoorne's. Diniz in 1996 had 4, but Hill scored zero in 1993 and 1994...

WCC

Code: Select all

Mercedes    15169 + 10472 = 25641

Toro Rosso lose out to Ferrari and Force India after this race.

19 Daniil Kvyat       4 x 26 =   104
17 Stoffel Vandoorne  7 x  2 =    14

I wasn't expecting Sainz to pop up in third here. When I started this alternative championship, I was hoping a Minardi driver would get placed this high, but it never happened. This is what I was originally hoping for from this alternative championship! ;) Just a shame that the team is now Toro Rosso, not Minardi. :( And Vandoorne escapes having one of the lowest points hauls of this championship (lowest points haul of those who actually scored points, that is. Although it is still pretty low to be honest.)

WCC

Code: Select all

Mercedes    16324 + 11572 = 27896
Toro Rosso   2640 +   104 =  2744
Red Bull     2244 +   486 =  2730
Force India  1736 +   784 =  2520
Ferrari      1175 +   966 =  2141
Renault       918 +   240 =  1158
Williams      589 +   504 =  1093
Sauber        470         =   470
Haas          220 +   208 =   428
McLaren       140 +    14 =   154

Toro Rosso jump three whole places in just one race in this championship! (Aided in no small part by the lap 1 crash between the two Ferraris and a Red Bull...) So it's all to play for to be first of the losers behind the all-dominant three-pointed star.

2017 Malaysian Grand Prix

Note: This is the first race of the current car numbering system (since 2014, drivers have permanent numbers allocated for as long as they remain in the category) that a number has been reused by a different driver. Kamui Kobayashi used car number 10 in 2014; Pierre Gasly is now currently using the same number 10.

Code: Select all

 1 Max Verstappen     25 x 33 = 825
 2 Lewis Hamilton     18 x 44 = 792
 5 Valtteri Bottas    10 x 77 = 770
 6 Sergio Perez        8 x 11 =  88
 8 Lance Stroll        4 x 18 =  72
 4 Sebastian Vettel   12 x  5 =  60
 3 Daniel Ricciardo   15 x  3 =  45
 9 Felipe Massa        2 x 19 =  38
10 Esteban Ocon        1 x 31 =  31
 7 Stoffel Vandoorne   6 x  2 =  12

The three high scorers in this race are a long way clear of the others.

WDC

Code: Select all

 3 Valtteri Bottas  222 x 77 = 17094
 1 Lewis Hamilton   281 x 44 = 12364
 6 Max Verstappen    93 x 33 =  3069
 9 Carlos Sainz      48 x 55 =  2640
 8 Esteban Ocon      57 x 31 =  1767
 2 Sebastian Vettel 247 x  5 =  1235

Code: Select all

 5 Kimi Raikkonen   138 x  7 =   966
10 Nico Hulkenberg   34 x 27 =   918
 7 Sergio Perez      76 x 11 =   836
11 Felipe Massa      33 x 19 =   627
12 Lance Stroll      32 x 18 =   576
 4 Daniel Ricciardo 177 x  3 =   531
18 Pascal Wehrlein    5 x 94 =   470
17 Jolyon Palmer      8 x 30 =   240
15 Kevin Magnussen   11 x 20 =   220
13 Romain Grosjean   26 x  8 =   208
16 Fernando Alonso   10 x 14 =   140
19 Daniil Kvyat       4 x 26 =   104
14 Stoffel Vandoorne 13 x  2 =    26

Bottas now has more points than anybody has ever scored in one season before. And we still have 5 races left. I suspect he has this wrapped up now.

WCC

Code: Select all

Mercedes      17094 + 12364 = 29458
Red Bull       3069 +   531 =  3600
Toro Rosso     2640 +   104 =  2744
Force India    1767 +   836 =  2603
Ferrari        1235 +   966 =  2201
Williams        627 +   576 =  1203
Renault         918 +   240 =  1158
Sauber          470         =   470
Haas            220 +   208 =   428
McLaren         140 +    26 =   166

Red Bull move back ahead of Toro Rosso again.

I know he hasn't scored any points yet, but why on earth has Hartley been allowed to carry car #28, I thought two full seasons had to have elapsed before any numbers got "re-used" - and Will Stevens had it all through 2015? Though I know Gasly using #10 is OK on that front as Kobayashi last used it in 2014.

Good question. I don't know the answer.

I have decided that, as from next season, I will not post individual race results here. Why? Because it takes a lot of time, and I don't need each race result to calculate this alternative championship table, just the overall points total and the car number. There may be occasional updates as the season progresses, but it will be on an ad-hoc basis as I feel so inclined, but it will be calculated after the final race of the year, when it counts.

By far and away the largest points haul in championship history. And Lewis has not scored as highly as he has done in recent history.

WCC

Red Bull     5544 +   600       =  6144
Force India  2697 +  1100       =  3797

Williams      817 +   720       =  1537
Haas          380 +   224       =   604
Sauber        470               =   470
McLaren       238 +    26       =   264

As I said in my previous post, I don't need individual race results to calculate this championship, so updates will be less frequent next year, on a "as I can be bothered" basis (or as time/work allows).

A quiz on driver numbers. I scored 12/15. Should have done better. But I did misread or misunderstood one or two...

The 2018 Car Numbers Championship

As anticipated, this was a Mercedes silver-wash, with Max Verstappen in a distant, lonely 3rd. Some might describe his season as being in F1.33 while everybody else is in F1.50.

For the sake of the constructor's championship, I have listed Force India separately, and calculated their scores pre-summer break, post-summer break, and as a season as a whole. You can then decide how the team sits in the championship (as separate teams pre- and post-summer break, they sit behind Haas and ahead of McLaren; yet combined, they only move one position ahead of Haas).

WDC

Code: Select all

 5 Valtteri Bottas  247 x 77 = 19019
 1 Lewis Hamilton   408 x 44 = 17952
 4 Max Verstappen   249 x 33 =  8217
10 Carlos Sainz      53 x 55 =  2915
 7 Nico Hulkenberg   69 x 27 =  1863
 3 Kimi Raikkonen   251 x  7 =  1757
 2 Sebastian Vettel 320 x  5 =  1600
12 Esteban Ocon      49 x 31 =  1519
 9 Kevin Magnussen   56 x 20 =  1120

Code: Select all

11 Fernando Alonso   50 x 14 =   700
 8 Sergio Perez      62 x 11 =   682
13 Charles Leclerc   39 x 16 =   624
 6 Daniel Ricciardo 170 x  3 =   510
14 Romain Grosjean   37 x  8 =   296
15 Pierre Gasly      29 x 10 =   290
19 Brendon Hartley    4 x 28 =   112
18 Lance Stroll       6 x 18 =   108
17 Marcus Ericsson    9 x  9 =    81
20 Sergey Sirotkin    1 x 35 =    35
16 Stoffel Vandoorne 12 x  2 =    24
Valterri Bottas wins his second title!

WCC

Code: Select all

Mercedes  19019 + 17952 = 36971
Red Bull   8217 +   510 =  8727
Renault    2915 +  1863 =  4778
Ferrari    1757 +  1600 =  3357
Haas       1120 +   296 =  1416
McLaren     700 +    24 =   724
Sauber      624 +    81 =   705
Toro Rosso  290 +   112 =   402
Williams    108 +    35 =   143

Code: Select all

Force India (pre-summer break)
Sergio Perez 30 x 11 = 330
Esteban Ocon 29 x 31 = 899
330 + 899 = 1229

Racing Point Force India (post-summer break)
Sergio Perez  682 - 330 = 352
Esteban Ocon 1519 - 899 = 620
352 + 620 = 972

Team Silverstone
682 + 1519 = 1229 + 972 = 2201

Car numbers for the 2019 season have been announced for all except Albon.

Code: Select all

 F1 2019 entry list

Mercedes: 44 Lewis Hamilton, 77 Valtteri Bottas
Ferrari: 5 Sebastian Vettel, 16 Charles Leclerc
Red Bull-Honda: 10 Pierre Gasly, 33 Max Verstappen
Renault: 3 Daniel Ricciardo, 27 Nico Hulkenberg
Haas-Ferrari: 8 Romain Grosjean, 20 Kevin Magnussen
McLaren-Renault: 4 Lando Norris, 55 Carlos Sainz
Racing Point-Mercedes: 11 Sergio Perez, 18 Lance Stroll
Sauber-Ferrari: 7 Kimi Raikkonen, 99 Antonio Giovinazzi
Toro Rosso-Honda: 26 Daniil Kvyat, Alexander Albon*
Williams-Mercedes: 63 George Russell, 88 Robert Kubica

I predict another year of domination for Mercedes in 2019, unless Williams can miraculously return to being a top-three team.

Which I sadly doubt. :(

I know... Might have been interesting to see how this title fight swung to and fro throughout the season, but time prevents me from finding out!

 8 Alexander Albon 92 x 23 = 2,116
17 Antonio Giovinazzi 14 x 99 = 1,386

12 Kimi Raikkonen 43 x 7 = 301
11 Lando Norris 49 x 4 = 196
 9 Daniel Ricciardo 54 x 3 = 162
19 Robert Kubica 1 x 88 = 88
18 Romain Grosjean 8 x 8 = 64
20 George Russell 0 x 63 = 0
Antonio Giovanazzi is clearly the big winner from this, while George Russell was never going to change his position without having scored some points first. A clear win this time for Valtteri Bottas, helped by choosing a decent car number and a decent team to drive for.

Code: Select all

Mercedes 25102 + 18172 = 43274
McLaren 5280 + 196 = 5476
Ferrari 4224 + 1200 = 5424
Alfa Romeo 1386 + 301 = 1687
Renault 999 + 162 = 1161
Racing Point 572 + 378 = 950
Haas 400 + 64 = 464
Williams 64 + 0 = 64
Red Bull 9174 + some of Gasly + some of Albon
Toro Rosso 962 + some of Gasly + some of Albon

Couldn't be bothered to sort out how many points Gasly and Albon scored for each team, but I might sort that out at a later date. But it is clear that Red Bull would be a clear second between Mercedes and McLaren, while Toro Rosso would come somewhere around Alfa Romeo, I assume.

Re: Jules Bianchi car number alt. championship

I never did sort out the points distribution between Gasly and Albon for the Constructors Championship for 2019. Never mind.

2020 championship standings

 2 Valtteri Bottas   223 x 77 = 17171
 1 Lewis Hamilton    347 x 44 = 15268

Inevitable domination by the full-time Mercedes drivers - large points haul with large car numbers. Inevitable result for the Haas drivers - small points hauls with small car numbers.

Re: Jules Bianchi car number alt. championship

I thought I was three or four years behind with this. I thought I last updated it in the year I qualified as a registered nurse, but it turns out I updated this the last time I changed jobs. I am currently on annual leave, doing nothing but relaxing and chilling out at home, so here is the next update.

2021 Championships

Code: Select all

3 Valtteri Bottas Mercedes 226 x 77 = 17402
2 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 387.5 x 44 = 17050
1 Max Verstappen Red Bull 395.5 x 33 = 13051.5
5 Carlos Sainz Ferrari 164.5 x 55 = 9047.5
7 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 159 x 16 = 2544
11 Esteban Ocon Alpine 74 x 31 = 2294
4 Sergio Perez Red Bull 190 x 11 = 2090
10 Fernando Alonso Alpine 81 x 14 = 1134
9 Pierre Gasly AlphaTauri 110 x 10 = 1100
15 George Russell Williams 16 x 63 = 1008

Code: Select all

14 Yuki Tsunoda AlphaTauri 32 x 22 = 704
6 Lando Norris McLaren 160 x 4 = 640
8 Daniel Ricciardo McLaren 115 x 3 = 345
13 Lance Stroll Aston Martin 34 x 18 = 612
18 Antonio Giovinazzi Alfa Romeo 3 x 99 = 297
12 Sebastian Vettel Aston Martin 43 x 5 = 215
16 Kimi Raikkonen Alfa Romeo 10 x 7 = 70
17 Nicholas Latifi Williams 7 x 6 = 42
Esteban Ocon benefits wells from this.
But remember that Abu Dhabi debacle? It didn't have the same impact in this alternative universe/championship scenario. Not only does Lewis Hamilton remain ahead of Max Verstappen, but Valterri Bottas, in his last season at Mercedes, beats them both and takes the title! Phew, at least there is one place where the mistake of Masi is minimised.

Code: Select all

Mercedes 17402 + 17050 = 34452
Red Bull 13051.5 + 2090 = 15141.5
Ferrari 9047.5 + 2544 = 11591.5
Alpine 2294 + 1134 = 3428
Alpha Tauri 1100 + 704 = 1804
Williams 1008 + 42 = 1050
McLaren 640 + 345 = 985
Aston Martin 612 + 215 = 827
Alfa Romeo 297 + 70 = 367
Haas 0
It continues to be a Mercedes domination. Yawn. But Russell's Belgian GP result really propels Williams up the table.

2022 Championships

4 George Russell Mercedes 275 x 63 = 17325
5 Carlos Sainz Ferrari 246 x 55 = 13530
6 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 240 x 44 = 10560
2 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 308 x 16 = 4928
10 Valtteri Bottas Alfa Romeo 49 x 77 = 3773
3 Sergio Perez Red Bull 305 x 11 = 3355
8 Esteban Ocon Alpine 92 x 31 = 2852
9 Fernando Alonso Alpine 81 x 14 = 1134

Code: Select all

16 Mick Schumacher Haas 12 x 47 = 564
13 Kevin Magnussen Haas 25 x 20 = 500
7 Lando Norris McLaren 122 x 4 = 488
1 Max Verstappen Red Bull 454 x 1 = 454 (454 x 33 = 14982)
15 Lance Stroll Aston Martin 18 x 18 = 324
17 Yuki Tsunoda AlphaTauri 12 x 22 = 264
14 Pierre Gasly AlphaTauri 23 x 10 = 230
12 Sebastian Vettel Aston Martin 37 x 5 = 185
18 Guanyu Zhou Alfa Romeo 6 x 24 = 144
11 Daniel Ricciardo McLaren 37 x 3 = 111
19 Alex Albon Williams 4 x 23 = 92
21 Nyck de Vries Williams 2 x 45 = 90
20 Nicholas Latifi Williams 2 x 6 = 12
Max, you did yourself no favours here by using the number 1. You could've been 2nd instead of 12th. And another year where Lewis's teammate beats everybody to the title. Still a Mercedes winner for the nth year running, but it replaces a real-world Red Bull winner, so there's that I suppose. And it's not Lewis year after year, so that's also something. Although looking back at the first post in this thread, Lewis hasn't won this for a few years now. His teammate does better by being fairly competitive and have a good car number...
And Nyck de Vries did alright against his Williams paddock stablemates, despite only doing the one race.

Code: Select all

Mercedes 17325 + 10560 = 27885
Ferrari 13530 + 4928 = 18458
Alpine 2852 + 1134 = 3986
Alfa Romeo 3773 + 144 = 3917
Red Bull 3355 + 454 = 3809 (3355 + 14982 = 18337)
Haas 564 + 500 = 1064
McLaren 488 + 111 = 599
Aston Martin 324 + 185 = 509
Alpha Tauri 264 + 230 = 494
Williams 92 + 90 + 12 = 194

Red Bull could have been two places higher if Max did not use the number 1, and a few more points here or there could have seen Red Bull as the season's bridesmaid rather than as a mid-fielder. And that's the way the cookie crumbles.
