Longest gap between scoring points?

Post by leywso »

I read somewhere over the weekend that Marcus Ericsson has a record now for the longest gap between two points-scoring finishes (50 starts). I can't seem to find anything to confirm this though. Who had the record before, does anyone know? I know that Luca Badoer went 50 races without ever scoring, and that it took Nicola Larini 44 races to score his first, but this is a slightly different scenario of a driver finishing in the points and then going a long time before scoring another.

In terms of time gap, no. Not even close. That goes to Lucien Bianchi, between Belgium 1960 and Monaco 1968. When it comes to Grands Prix elapsed, it gets more interesting, as Ericsson is equal 17th in this regard, at least according to StatsF1.

What this doesn't take into account is races missed by the driver altogether. In this respect, Mike Hailwood is considered to have the most, with 84, but he only competed in 9 races without scoring points in that time. Aguri Suzuki's longest streak without a point is 51 entries, more than Ericsson, but of those 51 entries, he only started 45. No one else 'in front' of Ericsson's 49 consecutive races without a point has more, so he does not have the most entries between consecutive points scored, but he does have the most starts between consecutive points scored.

Thanks Tommy.

You never know, Mercedes might give Piercarlo Ghinzani a drive sometime this season, so that he can take Ericsson's record! He scored points in his 15th start but then went 61 other races without scoring before he retired... :-)

Not GPs entered, but I guess Kubica now has the record for most GP events between scoring points?

That is indeed the case, with Stats F1 putting it at 168 races - it is also the longest interval in terms of years, at just over 8 years and 8 months between the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2019 German Grand Prix.

It is a really insane amount of time. Eight full seasons passed between Kubica's first and second careers in Formula 1. It just makes me think how many careers have come and gone in the meantime whilst he's been away:

- Paul di Resta (2011-13)
- Pastor Maldonado (2011-15)
- Jérôme D'Ambrosio (2011-12)
- Jean-Éric Vergne (2012-2014)
- Charles Pic (2012-13)
- Esteban Gutiérrez (2013-14, 2016)
- Jules Bianchi (2013-14)
- Giedo van der Garde (2013)
- Max Chilton (2013-14)
- Marcus Ericsson (2014-2018)
- Will Stevens (2014-15)
- André Lotterer (2014)
- Felipe Nasr (2015-16)
- Roberto Merhi (2015)
- Alexander Rossi (2015)
- Esteban Ocon (2016-18)
- Jolyon Palmer (2016-17)
- Pascal Wehrlein (2016-17)
- Stoffel Vandoorne (2016-18)
- Rio Haryanto (2016)
- Brendon Hartley (2017-18)
- Sergey Sirotkin (2018)

have ALL at the time of writing had their careers come and go whilst Kubica has been away.

Fixed. Maybe that one-off race he had for Williams, replacing Felipe Massa at the 59th minute of the 11th hour, was about as exciting as a half-drunk glass of milk and was easily missable, but it did happen.

Haha, phase two of Paul di Resta's career was quite short, wasn't it :D absolutely one for the "anonymous F1 stints" thread. Nearly as forgettable as Felipe Nasr.

That's 22 drivers - possible to fill a current grid.

It would be an impressive Formula E grid, if nothing else. Not to mention Alex Rossi, who I'd love to see get a second chance in F1.
