Saturday Afternoon Report:
Endurance Race Results:
Image

Autosport wrote:Finally, Steve Soper!

It took almost an entire season, but finally, british driver Steve Soper is a WTCM race winner. The british Kaliber driver finished half a minute clear of Deborah Gregg to take victory at a very wet Spa-Fracorchamps, with Zakspeed's Klaus Ludwig rounding up the top 3, over a minute back.

Andy Rouse and Tim Harvey both led the way early on, but both dropped out with mechanical problems, with Steve Soper beeing the only Kaliber finishing the race by the end of it. Deborah Gregg's 2nd place grants her victory in independents class, while the 3rd place for Ludwig granted him 2nd place in Independents class, confirming his title. Klaus Niedwiedz, in the Volvo's debut in A Class, equalized his best result of the year with his 4th place, with Martin Schanche rounding up the top 5. Mauro Baldi finished in 6th place to win C Class, with Marc Duez, Roland Asch, Luis Perez-Sala and Didier Theys rounding up the top 10 spots, with the belgian BMW factory driver securing sprint race pole.

Christian Danner followed suit in 11th place, with Larry Perkins bringing the Holden home in 12th place, always truggling in the full wet conditions. By finishing in 13th place, John Cleland took his first victory in B Class, ahead of the surprising Maserati of Simone Guidetti, who was classified in 17th by the end of the race, with Pedro Meireles rounding up the top 3 in class, scoring 1 point for Luigi Racing overall. Between them, you had Fabien Giroix, Stefan Johansson and Yannick Dalmas, the last one scoring Voeckler's first points of the year.

D Class saw Ingo Hoffmann take victory ahead of Philippe Müller and Beate Nodes, who climbs into 2nd in D Class championship after this weekend.

Sunday Report:
Sprint Race Results:
Image

Autosport wrote:Soper wins as Harvey is crowned champion

Steve Soper took some time to win races, but he has manage to do that two times this weekend, as he got a double victory at Spa win his win in the sprint race, ahead of Andy Rouse and Tim Harvey, who was crowned the first champion in WTCM history.

The british driver starts from 10th, and despite Mercedes driver Roland Asch leading the first 5 laps, Soper soon took the lead and embarked on a defense drive for the final 3 laps from Andy Rouse, preventing his team-mate from taking victory, and gifting Tim Harvey the Drivers Championship in WTCM.

Klaus Niedwiedz finished 4th again, making a great weekend for Volvo, with Marc Duez in 5th taking victory in C Class and in independents class. Deborah Gregg finished in 6th place, with Roland Asch in 7th place, Ludwig in 8th, Masahiro Hasemi in 9th, taking victory in B Class, with Didier Theys, Larry Perkins and Naoki Nagasaka rounding up the points paying positions.

In D Class, Ingo Hoffmann took victory ahead of Philippe Müller and John Nielsen.

Now, since we have Bathurst in the way... I'll give everyone an entire week to post Nurburgring entries and updates, and a further 24 hours to post final Bathurst entries.

Sunday Report:
Race Results:
Image

Autosport wrote:Cassidy and Nurmester win the 1000

Known as one of the best touring car races in the world, the 1988 Tooheys 1000 was meant to be special, as FIA announced it would be run under a NC race for WTCM. That said, the best touring car drivers were present, as the national australian squads wanted a piece of the action against the top squads in WTCM.

Of course, they tried, and almost did it. From 2nd to 7th, only australian teams finished, but it ended up beeing the dominant force in WTCM, the british team Kaliber that took victory in the end, with their #23 Ford Sierra RS500 driven by Brendon Cassidy and Thomas Nurmester into victory. Despite leading the first 9 laps of the race, the #21 that took pole of Andy Rouse and Tim Harvey, the Cassidy/Nurmester took the lead before the #22 Kaliber led for a while. The #21 and the #22 would retire, and Cassidy and Nurmester led every lap since lap 40 to take victory in Australia's biggest race. Brendon Cassidy becomes the first american to win the event, and it's first time ever in the race history that a australian driver, team or car doesn't win the 1000. It all wasn't easy though: with 5 laps to go, Brendon Cassidy reported a problem with the car, as power was lacking. It all become apparent with 1 lap to go, when Cassidy's Sierra started to have a trail of smoke. The engine had broken, and Cassidy nursed the car home to finish 1 lap ahead of the #17 DJR of Dick Johnson and John Bowe, just for the Kaliber to stop about 50 meters after it crossed the finish line! The other DJR, the #18 car of Robb Gravett and Neville Crichton rounded up the podium of the race, another lap behind the #17. The #18 also set the fastest lap of the race.

4th place went to the #9 Sierra of Allan Moffat and Gregg Hansford, with Tom Walkinshaw and Jeff Allam driving a superb race to score 5th for the Holden team, in the single Commodore in the race. Alan Jones and Colin Bond followed in the #44 Caltex Sierra, with Tony Longhurst failing a heartbreak in the dying laps of the race while running in 5th place, as his gearbox broke. He was classified in 7th place. The #824 Cadbury of young talent Jack Christopherson and Guy Edwards finished in 8th place, with Peter Brock and Neil Crompton in the #05 BMW E30 M3 of Mobil 1 Racing taking victory in C Class, finishing in 9th place, with the #94 BMW of Roberto Ravaglia and Marc Hessel rounding up the overall top 10. By finishing in 11th place, Glenn Seton and John Goss took victory in B Class in the R31 GTS-R, followed by the #98 Hartge Motorsport BMW 635CSi of Brestislav Enge and Zdenek Vojtech who was classified 15th in the end. The final driver in the podium in C Class was the other Mobil 1 Racing BMW E30 M3 of Jim Richards and David Parsons. No D Class drivers were classified.

I'll give everyone 48 hours to finish posting Nurburgring entries, to runt he WTCM season finale!

Final results of the 1000 will be updated into the wiki slowly.

Favourites:
The season finale is upon us, and only two championships are mathematically not solved yet: D Class and A Class. It's Tim Harvey vs Andy Rouse in the second one, while Andrea Geisler only needs to win one of the races to confirm the title.
The tricky Norschleife: the hardest track in the world, the green hell, which is using the combined GP layout with the Norschleife portion. 26km await the drivers, and it's going to a test of driver skill and car endurance: beware of the Merkur's, as despite the lack of straightline speed, the american squad have aces up their sleeve to try and surprise.

Autosport wrote:Rouse and Mass storm to PQ wins

Ford driver Andy Rouse and Mercedes driver Jochen Mass have shared victories in the final PQ races of the inaugural season of WTCM. The british driver took the lead in the straightway leading towards the final part of the circuit, winning by less than a second to Tim Harvey, who confirmed the A Class title. Steve Soper got the final podium spot. Scott Pruett did a mighty impressive race, going from a low 10th on the grid to 4th by the end, just 3 seconds off Soper and the final podium spot. The Merkur's have quite strong race pace it seems. Roland Ratzenberger's lack of pace around here continues to show, as he finished in 5th place, ahead of Deborah Gregg. Jörg van Ommen was the best of the non-backed Ford's, finishing in 7th place, showing strong pace, followed by Klaus Ludwig, Martin Schanche and Masahiro Hasemi, who won B Class and rounded up the top 10.

In the second pre-qualifying race, Jochen Mass led all laps to take victory ahead of a great drive from Mauro Baldi, who fastest lap in the race was 4 seconds faster than anyone else. He was very close to take his first PQ and Class victory in WTCM, but just 3 tenths of a second separated him from Mass in the end. Christian Danner rounded up the top 3, with Theys and Asch closing the top 5. Prince Poldi finished in 6th place, with Armin Hahne and Luis Perez-Sala following. Brancatelli and Ravaglia rounded up the top 10 positions.
In D Class, Andrea Geisler won the class and confirmed the title in class, followed by Kudrass and Nielsen.

Autosport wrote:Scott Pruett wins in incredible fashion at the Nordschleife season finale

It was a fantastic race at the season finale for WTCM at the Nordschleife track, as Scott Pruett in the Merkur RS500 took victory, after he took the fight in the underpowered Ford to the manufacturer Sierra's, eventually passing Harvey (before getting repassed) during the final lap. Pruett got the win when Tim Harvey retired with a broken suspension.

Steve Soper finished in 2nd place, marking the first endurance race of the year that Kaliber didn't win since Bathurst, with Manuel Reuter finishing 3rd and taking the podium for Zakspeed. Klaus Niedwiedz took another 4th place to his name, taking 4th, with Hasemi winning B Class in 5th place. Roland Ratzenberger suffered a incredible shocking performance to end the year, taking 6th in the Kaliber on a agressive 3 stop strategy, with van Ommen, Hernandez, Hoshino and C Class winner Christian Danner closing the top 10.

Wolfgang Kudrass won D Class ahead of Andrea Geisler and Philippe Müller.

Final Championship Standings

1988 is over, and thank you all for entering the season. 1989 topic will be open over the next week or so.
