Another Alternate F1 2000

Post by good_Ralf »

I've taken the average percentage deficit from pole for each driver and from there I've worked out a constant for each constructor. What this means is that each car's pace will be multiplied, the slower the team, the higher the constant, so that in each session the gap between the front and back of the grid will be much smaller and the field spread will be nearly cancelled out.

So for this series, starting with 2000, I will apply the constants to all the teams in qualifying and race sessions, so expect some surprise results a lot of the time!

Constructor (Constant)

McLaren 1.005
Ferrari - 1.005
Jordan - 1.015
Jaguar - 1.020
Williams - 1.015
Benetton - 1.020
Prost - 1.030
Sauber - 1.025
Arrows - 1.025
Minardi - 1.035
BAR - 1.020

Today I'll do the first 4 races, then about 4 each day or so.

So now, round 1.

Australia

Qualifying

The new 'rules' appeared to help neutralize the field spread, with the top 15 covered by less than a second. Eddie Irvine took pole from Mika Salo, in his first event with Sauber. Teammates Diniz and Herbert could only manage 18th and 21st resp.
The front-runners of 1999 will be disappointed with their pace. The McLarens got 5th and 12th, the Ferraris could only line-up 14th and 15th. Another surprise was Marc Gene, who starts 6th in his Minardi.

Race

After an early SC, caused by a crash between pole-man Irvine and de la Rosa, Salo took the lead and held it to the finish, but despite winning by 25 seconds, was disqualified afterwards for a technical infringement, gifting Jacques Villeneuve a win from 8th on the grid. Behind him were Fisichella and teammate Zonta. who had charged up from 19th.

Ferrari only scored one point between them, but their rivals McLaren and Jordan saw none of their cars finish. Williams got points in their first race with BMW and Gene just missed out after his remarkable qualfying efforts.

Qualifying

Despite hitting a loose advertising hoard, many of which leading to a series of red flags in the session, Jean Alesi managed pole position with some ease from Mika Hakkinen's McLaren. Gene took another surprise result with 3rd place, but both Saubers started last, with rear wing issues. They would ultimately withdraw from the race on safety grounds.

Race

On a one-stop strategy, Giancarlo Fisichella took a win in his Benetton, and with Villeneuve retiring, lead the championship. Frentzen drove a solid race to take 2nd from 14th and Michael Schumacher took 3rd, on a two-stopper. Coulthard finished 4th a few seconds behind, but promptly got Salo'ed, leaving McLaren without a point.

Despite fatigue, Jos the Boss managed 4th from Trulli, TM de la Rosa getting the final point.

Qualifying

After their Brazilian disaster, Sauber went straight to the top at Imola, with a front row lock-out! Pedro de la Rosa took 3rd by a hair from Irvine. Hakkinen and Schumacher got 5th and 7th. Gene, the qualifying hero of the opening races, could only make 19th on the grid, beaten by dead-beat teammate Mazzacane.
And it was another terrible placing for Rubens...

Race

Michael Schumacher had excellent pace from 7th, and after clearing Salo and Hakkinen at the second stops, won on Ferrari's home turf by just half a second from Salo. That Mika will be even more furious over losing his Melbourne win. Hakkinen at least opened his account with 3rd just behind Salo, Diniz rounding out a great points finish for Sauber.

Villeneuve and Irvine scraped through to points finishes. Coulthard and Barrichello remain pointless, Schumi one point behind Fisi.

Qualifying

A continuously drying track in qualifying meant he who set a time last had the most of an advantage. Frentzen nailed his lap and starts 1st from the excellent Jos Verstappen in the Arrows. Jean Alesi starts 3rd ahead of Irvine. Jenson Button is 11th in his first home race, David Coulthard only 14th.

Race

The Minardi's dry pace was staggering as they managed a 1-2 finish, Gene from 7th winning and Mazzacane 7th from the last row. Alesi picked up a podium, meaning that every team has now scored.

Williams scored again with 4th from Ralf, but Button, and Ferrari's Barrichello after a hydraulics problem haven't scored a point yet. Michael Schumacher was only 11th after a ghastly opening lap, but Hakkinen only clawed back one point. Villeneuve will also be annoyed, he could have taken pole but for taking his final run too early, then his chance at closing the gap to Fisi ended late with a gearbox failure.

Spain

Qualifying

Jacques Villeneuve recovered from his Silverstone disappointments to start on pole, although were it not for a fuel infringement, de la Rosa would have started at the front instead. The top 10 were covered by less than 0.4s, so a slip on your hot lap could put you a row back on the grid. Zonta, 0.9s off, was a measly 19th. Jacques' main rivals for the title are only 6th and 14th.
Marc Gene, in front of his fans, took his Minardi into the top 10.

Race

Villeneuve led the race well until his throttle failed, so once again Jacques will be upset over the unreliability from BAR. Thankfully, Fisichella only achieved 5th, but Michael Schumacher could have done even better. 3rd was definitely possible, but a mistake at his first stop resulted in injury to the refueller, and his back-up stuffed the second stop. Schumacher promptly picked up a puncture and wound up 12th. This allowed Hakkinen close in by another 4 points.

After all this, Mika Salo won his first race of the year for Sauber to put him into title contention. In contrast, his teammate Pedro Diniz managed to beach his car... on the first lap!
Ralf Schumacher took 2nd and from the back Zonta gained a fighting 4th for BAR. Jenson Button was set for his first points of the year with 5th, until his engine blew with a few laps to go. As for the homeboys, Gene just missed out on scoring and original polesitter de la Rosa hit Alesi early on and retired.

Europe

Qualifying

de la Rosa made up for Spain by taking pole again, and this time he was allowed to keep it! Ironically, this was result once again due to the original timesetter getting disqualifed, Nick Heidfeld was deemed underweight and it was declared he would not be allowed to start the race. Coulthard starts behind Pedro. This time, the top 10 was covered by 0.3s, the top 13 by 0.4s! It is needless to say this, but if only F1 was always like this! Championship leader Fisichella is 3rd.

Race

Hakkinen took 3rd, having run ahead of Michael early on. Fisichella managed to salvage 4th even through he bumped Trulli out on the start line.
In spite of a spin or two, Mazzacane scored 2 points for 5th place. ROTY material, eh, F1 Rejects?

Jean Alesi has often been a qualifying specialist such that in Monaco, which suited his underpowered Prost, pole position came to him by nearly half a second from Trulli. Championship rivals Schumi and Fisi start alongside each other.

Race

Much like Villeneuve, Alesi must have been apoplectic over his Porst breaking down at the worst possible time. A win, if not a podium was definitely but for a transmission failure. And with Schumacher retiring after his rear suspension broke, Fisico is back in the box seat. Salo nabbed 2nd and Irvine made to the podium, Jaguar's first ever. Both Jordans both ought to have been there, except Trulli suffered another car failure and Frentzen crashed at Ste. Devote near the end, along with many others.

Heidfeld salvaged 4th for Prost, Barrichello scoring his first point for Ferrari after so many underwhelming near-misses. Hakkinen however, would have taken left Rubens pointless if something didn't jammed under his throttle pedal.

Race

Fisichella took back to back wins in Montreal and despite being in a very competitive field, has now won 3 races out of 8. If he can't win this year's championship I don't know who will. At this point in the year, Benetton and Fisichella would promptly fall off the cliff, of course I'm trying to jinx them!
de la Rosa might have challenged had he not been put on a race ruining two-stopper, before Diniz put him in the wall. Ironically, Diniz went on to score more points for Sauber, Salo not finishing.
Making up for de la Rosa's loss, was Jos Verstappen. After a mistake midway through, once rain came in the second half of the race, Jos soon put himself into 2nd place, a few seconds behind Fisi at flagfall.
Villeneuve fell did the opposite to Verstappen and crashed into Ralf. Fisichella's teammate Wurz came 4th, Michael Schumacher 6th after brake troubles, but only after Barrichello stayed behind him under Ferrari's orders.

Qualifying

Having qualified excellently in most races this year, Irvine took his second pole, after Australia. Nick Heidfeld, at his team's home race, joined him on the front row and Villeneuve once again popped up highly in 3rd.
Championship leader, Fisichella is 19th, sharing the 10th with TM Wurz.

Race

Irvine's race pace was so poor he slumped back, not for the first time this year, to 15th! Johnny Herbert retired, rounding off a(nother) bad result for last-placed Jaguar.
So Jacques Villeneuve won a dominant race for BAR, and like Irvine's pole, his first since Melbourne. While Zonta crashed out, Wurz had a very embarrassing off at the last corner and title contender Schumacher suffered an engine failure while in contention for a podium.

Coulthard took 2nd, Ralf 3rd and front-row man Heidfeld 4th. Fisichella managed 5th.
