Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2015 Hungary

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Ericsson's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until July 31

This has to go to the two drivers who kept their noses clean all race. And they are:

1. Sebastian Vettel - Perfect race for the chap. Never thought I'd be pleased to see him win.

2. Fernando Alonso - 5th in that shitbox? Wat.

Honourable mentions to Nico Hulkenberg's front wing, for giving us those insane last 20 laps, Daniil Kvyat for his breakthrough podium, and Manor for being there.

Lots of candidates, but I have to go with:

1) Alonso - Out of all the surprise results today, a McLaren in 5th is definitely the least likely, imo.

2) Verstappen - One of the most mature drives today came from someone who is legally still a child.

Vettel is a close third, I reckon even without Rosberg and Ricciardo taking each other out of the equation he'd have held on for a win when I was sure he was going to be eaten by both Mercedes within 2 laps of SC pulling in.

1. Alonso - how did he manage to pop up into 5th place at the end? I might be mistaken, but I thought that he was in 11th after that safety car.

2. Verstappen - equally, how did he manage to work his way up into 4th place? He was going fairly quickly in the closing laps too.

1: Alonso: He had to drive a McLaren, he had to pit early for mediums due to a slow puncture, he was screwed by being lapped before the Safety Car and re-starting the race on 11th place with a 20-second gap behind the leading group, and he somehow managed to finish 5th. Seriously, what??

2: Kvyat: One of the most solid drives, from someone who was clearly the lesser of the two RBs.

1) Fernando Alonso: Seriously outdriving the car. Didn't even notice he'd got up that far.

2) Daniil Kvyat: While Ricciardo managed a podium as well, he was in a couple of scraps which meant that he didn't quite manage the excellent race of his younger teammate.

1. Fernando - Dude is a boss
2. Daniil Kvyat - Had to let Ricciardo through, car was undrivable but still got 2nd (including the +10 seconds)

HM to Maldonado for racking up like 4 penalties. That's solid work.

Well, clearly we have seen some interesting performances and need to be mentioned. I was happy to see Max finally showing off some maturity again to drive to a solid 4th, but that could have been a podium without that dumb DT. Same for Kvyat and Ricciardo, the latter had the edge over the former for the entire race only to blow it with an optimistic move on Nico. Kvyat was somewhat more clean but not as quick and also had a 10 second penalty.

So I'm inclined to do it this way:

1. Sebastian Vettel - Best drive, cleanest drive and the fastest driver today. He was just the best today.
2. Fernando Alonso - Strong performance in a car that's more suited to strong tracks. Still, 5th in that car is absolutely astonishing.

So many nominations I'll have to give shared points...

1. (shared, 3.33 points for each): 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix: Best race ever!
Daniil Kvyat: Podium against the odds and the best result ever for a Russian driver.
Fernando Alonso: Fifth in that terrible McLaren
2. (shared, 2 points for each): Max Verstappen: Unrejectified!
Ferrari: Awesome pace, shame about the reliability of car number 7.
McLaren: The result was far better than anyone could have expected. Button struggled compared to Alonso, though.

1 - Alonso, 5th? 5th? How did you get 5th?
2 - Verstappen - His dad will still be saying, 4th? In my first season I was 3rd around here, still it was a great race. Without the penalties he might have said "Dad, you were a bit crap..."

1)McLaren Honda: Outta nowhere both cars got to the flag, scored, and Alonso managed the bonus with an awesome 5th for a team that was on his deadbed last race.

2)Danill Kvyat: Silent, solid run that Hamilton almost thrashed, but the young russian managed to hold.

Honorable mentions to The Hungarian GP (what a thriller!), Daniel Ricciardo (Dale got racy today) and Sebastian Vettel (perfect run for Wonder Kid)

What a great race and unlike in few races this year, this time there´s actually lot to choose from in terms of who deserves awards.

1) Ferrari: Could have beaten at least Rosberg even without the crashes. Räikkönen´s technical problems did steal a double victory but still, great race for them and while few teams did do well today, Ferrari was the only ones who didn´t need other´s to fail to get were they finished (well ok, maybe they did need bit help from Hamilton but still).

2) McLaren: Nice to see them on points and being able to compete against other teams on the track. And while Alonso was the better driver this time, I will nominate whole team instead of just Alonso as I don´t think Button did that badly either since I believe that the main reason he lost so clearly at the end was the fact that he didn´t get new tyres during virtual safety car (my guess is that was because he would had lost time being too close to Alonsa and perhaps they planned to pit next lap but the safety car spoiled that one). Then again, Button is my favorite driver so maybe I´m bit biased here.

Honorable Mentions:
Red Bull: Unlike Ferrari or McLaren, they didn´t have a clean race with Ricciardo crashing twice and Kvyat getting that penalty and that´s drop them to honorable mention on my books. Still, great race for them regardless.
Max Verstappen: 4th is a great result from a rookie but the fact that Williams, Mercedes and Räikkönen had bad races meant that he didn´t actually beat anyone who he shouldn´t had been able to beat and that drops him to honorable mentions this time.

1 - Alonso. He finished 5th in that car and was so much better than Button.
2 - Vettel. What a great start. He drove like a champion today. Something that cannot be said of Hamilton or Rosberg.

1. Alonso - I know this should have been McLaren's least-worst track, but still, great drive to 5th.
2. Vettel - Had disappeared up the road (by modern F1 standards) prior to the SC, and then kept his head after seeing his advantage subsequently wiped out.
