The Rik Mayall / Robin Williams Memorial Comedy Thread

Post by Jocke1 »

I'm really saddened to hear about Mayall's passing. The man was a comedic genius.
I've spent countless hours the last two decades+, ever since I was a kid really, watching The Young Ones and Bottom.

Just seeing Rik's face in any media event has always put a smile on my face, my all-time favorite moments
are when Richie & Eddie kill the gas man in 'Bottom' and the entire scene where the cd player gets stuck at "Indestructible"
in The Comic Strip's 'Four Men In A Car' episode. If you have never seen it, please do.
Pretty much every scene from TYO involving Rick is also gold.

They say he suffered a heart attack? Such a shame, and he was still young.

This can be a thread to share video links and/or suggestions of good english comedy to watch.
I've recently discovered 'Vicious', while not the best I've ever seen it's certainly got it's funny moments.

English comedy have always been at the top, at least for me.
I always come back for more with all things Monty Python and the six legends individual stuff, The Young Ones, Tommy Cooper, Fawlty Towers, Peter Sellers, Mr. Bean, The Office and almost everything else by Gervais (Extras, Life's too Short),
Keeping Up Appearances, Bottom, Ripping Yarns, The Pink Panther movies (Sellers, not Martin), The Plank, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Benny Hill..

Well, I always love hearing a couple of English white guys rapping about biscuits...

I've got my lovely chunky biscuits
I'm going to say it again in case you missed it
I ain't dunking no girl like a biscuit
Ain't gonna change so don't try to twist it.

The clip just cuts off Gaz telling Johnny, "So you're a bit strange then..." It then gets rehashed in a later musical episode. Ballamory!

Then, of course, "I don't like spam!!!" "Great boobies honeybun. My nipples explode with delight!"

And I love this recent variation (in my mind at least!) on the Four Candles sketch. And I often think of this Two Ronnies sketch whenever the Manx TT is on... :?

Personally, I'm more into topical comedy shows like Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week, Russell Howard's Good News and especially The Last Leg on channel 4.

Thanks for starting the thread Jocke1. This has been a bit of a punch to the guts for me really, it's left me a bit down and grumpy (even more than normal). What's particuary galling is that utter cnut Michael Mcuntyre appears to be very much alive and still peddling his bland 30s-style comedy wankfest.

And don't get me started on Mrs Brown's Boys. Just don't. I'm not kidding.

The early seasons are definitely the best. Season 6 wasn't so good regarding the fact that the ship which the series is named after didn't feature once and the way the production company killed the crew at the end was a bit extreme for my liking. Haven't seen much of S7 & 8 but from what I know they're terrible. The latest season made in 2012 was quite funny/enjoyable IMO.

Series 6 was far and away the best series of Red Dwarf, almost perfect. Series 7 had some good episodes (Tikka to Ride is the best) and Series 8 was, in my opinion, much better than 7. Still watchable and enjoyable for me but I can see why people don't like them.

Only Fools And Horses deserves a mention in here, a classic show that's still well-loved.

Absolutely - they're both still brilliant, and I've loved pretty much everything they've done. Their 'one-off' hits are just as good as the well-known stuff - 'Norbert Smith, A Life' and (especially) 'Smashie & Nicey : End Of An Era' for Enfield, and the 'Help' series that Paul Whitehouse did with Chris Langham that will sadly never see the light of day again I expect. In that, he played all the characters who were visiting a therapist, all totally different and brilliantly played. He's a wonderful actor - just take a look at the Rowley Birkin sketch where the usual nonsense format is subverted as he talks about his ex-wife for more evidence of that.

It's such a shame that most of Harry Enfield's older stuff isn't available on DVD at all. I suspect that rights issues for the music in the Smashie & Nicey segments will be one reason, but I do wonder whether Harry is blocking it for some reason. A real shame if so.

I forgot to mention Fry & Laurie in the original post and it seems like everyone else has, too.

When I first watched this sketch I was in tears.

I enjoyed The Mighty Boosh, but his Luxury Comedy thing was a bit of a misnomer. Luxury Surrealism, perhaps...but it's not really that funny. I think he appeals more to 14-year-old girls who are "just soooooo random omg! chinchilla! dat waz me being well random lol", etc.

Anyway, British comedy. The League of Gentlemen, anyone?

By far my favourite has to be Allo Allo, especially Officer Crabtree and his legendary malpropisms. Thanks to him I almost always greet people with "Good moaning"!

Also, does anyone else here remember a BBC3 puppet-based series called Mongrels? It only ran for two series and so far no one else I know has ever heard of it!

RIP, Robin. You were a true great and an inspiration to many.

Depression is one of the most horrible illnesses in the world, and hearing about deaths like this affect me greatly. I don't want to go into details, lest I distress people.

Regardless, I do have this to say. If you're feeling depressed, or scared, or anything like that, I'm around if you want to talk. I guess it's good to have a vent once in a while, so I'm happy to listen if you need me to.

I can't really add much to it. I took Robin Williams for granted, so i never realised how good he was. But looking back, i must say it's impressive what he has done. I can't say a lot about the circumstances, but i do understand the complexity of depressions, and refuse to judge about it.
I don't know what i want and i want it now!
