Re: Complete List of ROTR's
I still maintain awarding Bernoldi ROTR for Monaco 2001 is absolutely outrageous. If he'd done that 10 or so years later to Hamilton or someone, we'd be lauding him for his fighting spirit and defensive prowess.

If anything, it should be Monaco.

I agree. The worst ROTR decision I think. They could have given ROTR either to the circuit, Montoya (for that stupid crash at the habour chicane), or Burti, who was 2.5 seconds slower than Alesi in qualifying and spent the whole race in second last position.

Yeah, I find the Bernoldi one a bit harsh.

Re: Complete List of ROTR's
Of the 4 races where J+E didn't give the award to anyone Japan 2000 should have gone to Prost for another shocker of a weekend and another Peugeot Motor detonated. Malaysia 2000 would probably go to Pedro Diniz for causing the opening lap pile up and then for trying to 3-wheel his car back to the pits. If not him then Jordan for a poor afternoon which saw Trulli come 12th and last and Frenzten retiring. Australia 2001 should go to Gaston Mazzacane who qualified 20th only faster than Burti and Marques and not even getting around the first lap. Australia 2003 should go to Mark Webber's car for robbing him of a potential victory.
Of the first 8 races of 2000 i would have gone for the following
AUS: British teams (Mclaren Jaguar Jordan Arrows Williams for qualifying)
BRA: Sauber (For the rear wing fiasco)
SMR: Jos Verstappen (Drove like a tool all weekend)
GBR: Arrows (Identical problems with both cars and they were the first 2 cars out)
ESP: Arrows (again) (17 cars finished and Arrows were the only team not to get a car to the finish)
EUR: Jaguar (Both cars caught up in accidents)
MON: Jean Alesi's transmission (Robbed him of a potential podium place)
CAN: Jacques Villeneuve (For his moment of sheer brain fade)

Interesting choices James1978 however the funniest for 2002 for me was Japan when they gave it to the whole field except Ferrari.

I don't understand the "Everyone bar Ferrari" because when would Minardi be faster than Ferrari?

Re: Complete List of ROTR's
I think the Japan 2002 award should have been split two ways between Williams and McLaren - based on expectations, you wouldn't seriously expect any of the other teams to have regularly challenged Ferrari (with perhaps the exception of Renault but they were rebuilding having taken over from Benetton who had a miserable 2001). Slightly arguably Jordan and BAR too but definitely nobody else.
Whereas Massa's Monaco race that year was just so bad it was laughable.

Yeah, I found it harsh to. I mean, at the start of 2002, people were talking of a 3-way battle between McLaren, Ferrari and Williams for the title, so they deserved a stake of the ROTR. However, to give the award to Minardi, and to a lesser extent Toyota, always struck me as being a bit harsh
TORA! TORA! TORA!

I'd been waiting to do this long before i registered for this website. Now everyone knows who's won them all
Of the current grid this is how they won them
Vettel
Japan 2007: Imagine if that was Webber's only shot at a victory
Monaco 2009: Wasted a golden chance for victory and eventually binned it at St Devote
Turkey 2010 (Shared with Horner and Marko): For his part in the Red Bull fiasco
Belgium 2010: For those amateur crashes with Button and Liuzzi
Germany 2011 (Shared with Michael Schumacher): Underwhelming weekend
Webber
Malaysia 2004: Saturday's hero to Sunday's absolute zero
Belgium 2004: For triggering the first lap pile-up
San Marino 2005: Went backwards in the race
Canada 2007: Along with 17 other drivers he screwed up at some point
Australia 2010: Amateurish race by his standards
Abu Dhabi 2012: 3 stupid collisions
Alonso
Italy 2003: Hungary hero to Italy zero
Canada 2005 (Shared with Juan Pablo Montoya): Moment of hot-headedness
Germany 2006: Off the pace all race
Canada 2007: Along with 17 other drivers he screwed up at some point
Germany 2008: Woeful race probably sealed because of Piquet's podium
Massa
Monaco 2002: Master of disaster all weekend
Italy 2002: Collision with Pedro De La Rosa
Malaysia 2007: Reckless overtake on Hamilton

Fantastic list!
How about Spa 1998 for Coulthard though? The first-start accident, collding with Wurz at the restart, lifting off for Schumi instead of moving over. Plus being sent out again when it was a hopeless cause.

Re: Complete List of ROTR's
A thought went through my head post-Canadian GP, and this thread has helped. After the death of the marshall at the Canadian GP, I was wondering whether it would be appropriate or not for something like ROTR to be awarded. I used to read F1 News magazine in the 1990s, and their tagline was always, "Puts The Fun Into Formula One." But in their post-Imola 1994 issue, they dropped this tagline (which normally went immediately under their title on the cover), and dropped their "Caption This" feature, etc. Looking at the list above, it appears that ROTR was awarded after the death of Paolo Ghislimberti at the 2000 Italian GP, but not after the death of Graham Beveridge at the 2001 Australian GP. Was this because of the death of the marshall, or some other reason? Should this be awarded if there has been something tragic taking place?

I think the funniest ROTR so far this year has been Bianchi's Phantom Marussia.

Re: Complete List of ROTR's
I'm Going to give my ROTY opinions (From 2000 onwards)
2000 - Prost. 0 points dodgy car and drivers hitting each other. Defo ROTY
2001- DC's Title bid- It wasn't. He won 2 races at the start of the year and then disappeared.
2002- Alex Yoong - I have to agree with J+E here. Needed more testing time
2003- Jacques Villeneuve- never came to grip with having competition at the team and left. BAR were better without him
2004 - (Joint Award) Williams and Mclaren - were meant to challenge Ferrari and didn't get close
2005 - Rubens Barrichello - Didn't really try in his last season for the prancing horse
2006 - Cosworth - Bad way to go out of f1 with so many engine failures
2007- Alonso vs Hamilton- the feud between them cost Mclaren both titles in the end
2008- Jenson Button- J+E were right here. the only time I saw him was the ITV opening titles
2009- Nelson Piquet JR- Horrible driver on and off the track. I hope I never see him anywhere near a f1 car again
2010- Michael Schumacher- So much hype. Nothing delivered
2011- Williams - I never thought they would sink lower than this (I was wrong)
2012- Maldonado and Senna (Joint Award) Wasted a very good Williams
2013 top 3 so far (Its all teams at the moment)
1. Mclaren (How the mighty have fallen)
2. Williams (See above)
3. Sauber ( no money and seemingly no talent in one of the cars (not the Hulk)

2001: Now that you mention it DC's title challenge wasn't great. He outraced Michael fairly and squarly twice all season and never after his Austrian victory. Also maybe Hakkinen's poor year made him look better than he was that year
2003: Villeneuve's comments about Button certainly didn't help him. Battling the Minardi's for 18th at the Nurburging summed up his year perfectly
2004: While Williams and Mclaren were poor and Pantano is obvious i would give a mention to the Trulli/Briatore fall out. In the December 2004 edition of F1 Racing it said that even at Monaco where Trulli won that Flavio praised the team instead of Jarno and of course France was the last straw.
For 2007 Lewisteria should get it because the hype around Lewis was immense and unruly. Also it really was Villeneuve 1996 all over again in which Jacques drove the best car on the grid to many wins and fought for the title and look what happened to him. Lewis wasn't tested in many situations where nothing works for him and people were still going on about Lewis can be one of the greatest drivers ever and i couldn't help having a big smile when Lewis lost the title and Raikkonen and the FIA burst the evil bubble. The hype today is still bad. Whenever A German Wins it's all about the car and when a Brit wins it's because he's amazing.
2012 could have seen anyone take the award but i gave it to Mclaren. If you want to know why check the start of page 3 in the Reject of the year for years that were not covered thread

I think the hype around a rookie coming into the pinnacle of motorsport and matching and beating the reigning two-time champion (and heir apparent to Schumi) in equal machinery was possibly justified. Never mind the fact that back then, he was a thoroughly likable chappie and there you have the reasons for everyone liking him.

Re: Complete List of ROTR's
Controversial choice, but I think Jordan deserve a mention for the 2001 ROTY, for the way they treated Frentzen and the shambles that followed his sacking, which pretty much set the team on the course it followed until Eddie Jordan sold up in 2004. But I guess that's with hindsight applied.
2005, in my (highly biased) opinion, should go to the no tyre changing rule, for being an incredibly stupid and dangerous rule, and at least partially causing the Indy 2005 fiasco. Plus the fact that it rendered many of the races dull as ditchwater. But enough of my ranting on this.
2008 should have gone to the stewarding we saw that year, for being godawful. Bourdais's penalty at Fuji absolutely takes the biscuit.
To be honest, I'd give the 2012 ROTY to either Senna or Mercedes. Like it or not, Bruno was nowhere near The Reverend all year, he was so slow. I gave him the benefit of the doubt in 2010 because he was driving such a dreadful car, and in 2011 because he was parachuted in with miminal testing into a car that was steadily sliding down the field as the season progressed, but he had to impress in 2012, and he had a great chance to do so. Which he didn't take advantage of, unless being stuck behind a Caterham for half the race at MONTREAL of all places is a qualifying factor of some sort, because that is impressive, if for the wrong reasons...

I don't think nominating Jordan for 2001 ROTY is controversial at all mate. From what I've read on Wikipedia because the Jordan's were very quick in pre-season testing and many thought that Jordan would be the team to take on Ferrari and Mclaren for title honors. As we know Jordan scored no podiums and only just finished ahead of BAR and were beaten by Sauber on a smaller budget. Sure bad luck played it's part with Frentzen losing 3rd in Brazil thanks to Gearbox Failure and Trulli suffered 5 retirements in a row at the end of the season. The car they had was great in Qualifying with many top 6's on the grid but they couldn't keep it going in the races. San Marino was the only time both cars scored points and after that race Frentzen would not score again for the rest of the year which ultimately led to his sacking from the team.
I suppose the only thing you like about 2005 was that Ferrari's domination ended? Part of it was down to Bridgestone suffering to produce a compound that could be fast and durable at the same time with the notable exception being Imola. However Ross Brawn himself admitted that the F2005 wasn't the greatest Ferrari the team had ever built. I think that's down to the fact that there had been no change for some time at Ferrari and they didn't have any new ideas.
As for the 2008 stewarding you only need to look at the Belgian GP ROTR to understand how good stewarding was in 2008

I'd put Jordan in middle of my 2001 rankings, if not lower, but if there was one year where they would take ROTY outright, it would be 1992. They had a gutless car with poor pace, terrible reliability and a godawful paint job compared to the 1991 car. With some good but problematic drivers, they only scored 1 point all season and were 11th in the standings, which today is Caterham/Marussia territory!

Wasn't that the year they had Yamaha works engines? I don't remember much about Jordan that season, except that their former driver, driving a Benetton, crashed into Stefano Modena (Magny-Cours, was it )...after having allegedly been given the 'evil eye' by Ayrton Senna..
We know who that is..

Yes it was. I think they contributed to Jordan's downfall, given how they had a wonderful debut season in 1991. At least Yamaha helped Arrows nearly win a race!

Re: Complete List of ROTR's
I think Ralf Schumacher deserved the ROTR for the 2001 Japanese Grand Prix than Kimi Raikkonen.

He's got it all wrong. When I see Ericsson and Chilton's hairdos, the only signal going to my brain is 1049.

I think he also deserves Japan 2003 ROTR. That had to be one of the most pathetic drives of his career i've ever seen. He didn't set a time in qualifying because it was wet when he ran then he had a mindless spin early in the race before he almost took out his own brother fighting for the championship and coming home a lapped 12th

Re: Complete List of ROTR's
While we are on the topic of ROTY I would like to nominate Sergio Perez for 2012. The 3 podium places were great (even if he used strategy for them) but it's worth remembering he scored 51 of his 66 points for the season in those 3 races. Had we had a normal year he would have only scored 1 point more than in 2011 where he missed 2 races so he would have scored less than the Maligned Bruno Senna and would have been ROTY

Re: Complete List of ROTR's
And I'll nominate Nigel Mansell for 1992's Reject Of The Year. The wins were great (even if he used the Williams FW14B to get them), but if we ignore those, he'd have finished equal on points with Jean Alesi in the execrable Ferrari F92A, and if we discount all his podiums he'd have scored no points at all, just like Perry McCarthy! In an Andrea Moda!
If fact, let's count up the points for that year using the current system, and see who would have outscored Nige if we forget about his podiums. Olivier Grouillard! Paul Belmondo! Eric van de Poele! In fact, even Gabriele Tarquini would have finished ahead of him via getting the Fondmetal to the finish line once, and if that doesn't scream "Reject Of The Year", I don't know what does!
Sergio Pérez was unavailable for comment.

How he is able to say something funny on the internet is perplexing to me. I find a lot of what he writes funny, especially his post in the 2013 Predictions Thread

I made one for exactly this purpose for a forum I used to frequent...
...but I really didn't think it would be necessary. And yes, the banner is supposed to be painful to look at.
