The Alternative 1988 F1 Season (Jim Clark Trophy 2)

Post by ADx_Wales »

In 1987 there was a one-off championship consisting of the non-turbo runners in the F1 season, there were only 7 cars that took part in this "Second Division", and was scrapped for 88, but these are the results of that year had the Jim Clark Trophy remained for the last year of the turbos.

(The "Best 11 out of 16" still applied to the season, but on calculation you will discover why this rule was not put into effect)

1988 F1 Non-Turbo Drivers Championship

Boutsen's Benetton was the most reliable 3.5 Litre of the field, finishes on the podium and in most races not far behind the turbo's of McLaren and Ferrari, wiped the floor, The Newey designed March found form halfway through the season, Williams' fall from grace was one that landed them knee deep in atmospheric hell, Patrese making creditable finishes on the "non-turbo" podium, Mansell's 2 finishes in the actual 88 season were also the only two points finishes in the non-turbo table, the Substitutes Brundle and Schlesser managed to scrape some "Atmo" points, Patrese brining the majority of the money home for Williams to finish a respectable 3rd in the "Colin Chapman Trophy" for Non-Turbo Teams.

Rial got 15 points! That's ridiculous! On the other hand, so was Williams' season.

One of the F1 magazines I had in that year actually printed these tables assuming that these non-turbo championships were continuing!

IIRC Rial were in pretty good shape according to those tables after the first few races...
