Very little if any understeer or oversteer going into corners, and I think the only problem is the fact we still can't get the Buick gear ratios right, so we're not making the most of the engine's power, of course meaning not enough top speed. We'll try and make a few changes before the race. I'm pretty confident of a points finish, so long nobody decides to be funny and whack into me again.

Dale Coyne Racing's second driver for the Indy 500 will be Danny Ongais, if he is available.

Heavy rain would probably be a good explanation. The real race took nearly 2 hours, so rain would probably be a good excuse for that extra hour or so.

But since you simulated with xkoranate, you probably just ran the same amount of laps, IndyCar did in real life, right? I'm just curious how you came to the three hours.

Yes I did. As far as I know you can't simulate rain, at least not by choice. Hmm... It's the only logical explanation for 3 hours though. Weird.

I think I have the explanation: You ran way too slow lap times at Long Beach. The current lap record is 1:06.886 from 2006. I doubt that the CART IndyCar were 14 seconds slower than the lap record, even in the early 90's. But I wonder how you came up with these lap times. :?

Yep, I've seen my mistake. Woops

Well, I'll leave it up to you guys to explain these discrepancies in any whacky way you choose :P

God, it was so close...

I am impressed with Mike and Huub's performances and Raul had a few troubles in the race, but we got the points and showed the car can be great for road courses

Tommy Bryne
We had a good car today, and were happy with the way the race was going, but Bill Vukovich III just didn't see us I guess. I went for the pass on the inside, and yeah I got it a little crossed up there but he should have seen me. Other than that very encouraging, since just qualifying for us was a win, let alone our pace in practice. I'm very much looking forward to working with Al Unser, Sr. at Indy where we know the Buick will be strong.

Teddy Yip
Tommy was great today. He ran real well, it was great to see. Shame about the ending of his race but that's racing. We'll come back stronger at Indy.

Autosport
It was a good debut from the brand new Theodore team at Long Beach, qualifying having shaken the car down on Wednesday morning at Sears Point. This is a team with potencial, despite not having having a sponsor yet. Buick engines and Al Unser, Sr. has to be a good superspeedway combination. They just need Tommy Bryne to calm down a little bit, his accident with Vukovich was sloppy; he just needed to be more patient. If Bryne can settle in show his talent, and the Buick keeps getting better on road courses then this team could pick up a few points on the road courses as well as being in the mix with Unser, Sr. on the superspeedways.

Autosport understands that with the revisions made to the Trofeo Alfa Romeo, Unser Sr. will be entered at Monza in the #41 Theodore car by Yip.

Scott did all he could in truly bad racing conditions. The crash was his fault or Tambay's? Some highlits of the race could helps all of us. I know Buddy is not that good in circuits, but he must learn to live with them.

Newman/Haas statement:

It was not the best race for us. The track was all wet and on that slippery conditions Mario with his experience fought well to take some points home. Unluckily Eddie Cheever and Michael had some accident at turn 2, which I am sure cost them both point finishes. As we said - not the best race for us, but Michael is gaining experience and we all learn from our mistakes, so we believe next time Newman/Haas team will be on top once again.
To finish first, first you have to finish!

Little Al in the other car was leading midway through the race but got involved in that enormous pileup on lap 50 which forced him in for a new front nose under the resulting pacecar, but third in still a solid effort for him. For Indianapolis, we'll be running a third car for Colombian Roberto Guerrero, using the number 16 car utilising a leased entry from Bettenhausen Motorsport

Gary Gerould wrote:Paul I'm standing here with John Andretti. John, 2 races, 2 accidents. Can't be a very motivating start huh?

John Andretti wrote:Well it's annoying because we've been doing nothing wrong. In Phoenix it was Cheever, and now... I mean I was minding my own business just keeping the car on the road, it was hard to see anything with all that spray, rain and wind. Then um suddenly I felt someone tap the back, and I managed to avoid losing the car, but then Firestone just T-boned me and that was that. I guess in conditions like this you can't really be upset at anyone, it was really hard to see anything. But yeah, really disappointed.

Gary Gerould wrote:Have you seen the replays?

John Andretti wrote:No not yet. Don't think I will really because after this we're going back to base to try and sort everything out for Indy. I think Indy can't come fast enough for us, um, same goes for all the Buick teams I think. We know we have the most powerful engine, so Indy, Michigan, Monza and to a lower extent Pocono are definitely the races we are looking forward to.

Gary Gerould wrote:Alright John one last question, are you okay?

John Andretti wrote:A bit winded but otherwise okay.

Alright I'm afraid Indy is going to have to be a bit rushed. I'll be in England beginning Thursday, and will be without a computer most likely for 2 weeks. So rather than keep you waiting, all the practice and qualifying results will be posted today shortly, with the race results coming tomorrow. Let me just explain my simplified Indy procedure.

There will be four free practice sessions, with all the cars taking part. Pretty much the same as any other practice session really. In addition to that there will be a fifth session with all the cars taking part. The difference is, the way qualifying shapes up will be based on the results here, with the top 12 being split into 'Group 1' and the rest into 'Group 2'. Regardless of how fast the cars in Group 2 are, Group 1 cars will line up in the first four rows of three, in order of how fast they qualify in qualifying. In simplified terms, a bit how the current F1 elimination system works. I chose this method to try and resemble in some way the 'Second Day Qualifying' scenarios we used to see in real life. The fastest 33 will qualify for the 500-mile sweepstakes.

So, in essence, Day 2 of Qualifying is Bump Day, correct?

I always preferred the four day qualifying format myself but obviously you won't have enough time to do all that.

Yes pretty much I guess.

Okay I've looked at my schedule again, and looks like I have just a bit more time. So today I'll do the first four free practice sessions first. The fifth session will take place tomorrow with qualifying.

Up and down sessions for Newman/Haas, it seems it will be a real battle to enter top 12...

Very pleased with the result. Scott is in comfort zone, and joining the big guns for the battle to come. Buddy's talent in ovals showed in the first two sessions, but technical issues make him drop in the third one. We expect to recover his car in time for the qualify

Good work, Raul and Pancho! Let's hope it can translate into a good quali-race performance

Is it too late to enter a one-off entry? If it's not, I'd like to enter Rich Vogler, but with a Buick engine. As a multiple-time USAC champion, he surely should know ovals. With the lighting fast (but very fragile) Buick, he should definitely be a force at Indy.

All in all, I'm pleased with Bobby, Arie and Scotty. I think the first four, if not three rows should be ours.

BTW, I'd really question your skill judgement, if Jean-Pierre Frey bumps the likes of Keke Rosberg or Michele Alboreto off the grid.

And if you need a proper theme for introducing the grid, use this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkTSr--4LRA

Yeah sure! We'll see how he fares ;)

Thing is, chassis, engines along with driver skill are all factors in the skill values, and I have separate values for each circuit. Well, almost each circuit anyway. Also remember that there is a certain degree of randomness involved when it comes to xkoranate :P

Now that brings back goddamn memories.

John Andretti wrote:Well the first three practice sessions really showed what we already knew; that the Buick and Lola are a superb superspeedway combo. Obviously we weren't really where we would have liked to be in the fourth session, but this was down to some mechanical problems we had with the car, though it has to be said the rest of the field really improved on the faster track. The Buicks are really looking strong here, just gotta look at the Ganassis, Theodores and ourselves, Robby's done some impressive lap times. I'm confident we'll make the top 12 for qualifying, and from thereon who knows? A good strong run in the race hopefully.

Pancho Carter's already attached to Patrick I'm afraid ;)

Seeing all the sudden additions of one-offs, I'll wait around an hour or so to see if anyone else has any more additional entries, and then post four more practice sessions. Would make sense with the sudden influx of entries who haven't been able to practice yet. ;)

Andale Announce Indy One-Off For Mike Groff

Andale Racing have announced the signing of American Racing Series star Mike Groff for a one-off outing at Indianapolis. The signing was announced right after the first week of practice at the famous Brickyard, where drivers John Andretti and Robby Unser placed strongly, with Andretti running a time fast enough for as high as second at one point. Andale officials said, "Andale Racing are delighted to announce the signing of Mike Groff for one weekend here at Indianapolis. Mike is a great talent making his way up the ladder, and we believe it's time he gained an Indy ride for all his efforts." Andale also announced that they would be reallocating Robby Unser's spare car for Groff, which of course means both drivers are now walking on a tight-rope, unless Andale make the use of John Andretti's spare available. The announcement is somewhat surprising considering Andale are normally a one-car operation barring ovals, where they run a second car for Robby Unser. However, Groff has brought sponsorship in the form of an as-yet unnamed sponsor. It will be interesting to see how Groff fares in comparison to his two teammates during next-week's practice sessions and 'knockout' round.

SHIERSON ANNOUNCE JEFF ANDRETTI FOR INDIANAPOLIS
INDY 500 TO SEE 4 ANDRETTIS?

Doug Shierson Racing have announced the signing of Jeff Andretti for the Indianapolis 500, in a one-off driving one of Shierson's customer March-Porsche combinations. Andretti is the youngest son of Mario and brother of Michael who are racing for Newman/Haas, and is also the cousin of John Andretti, who drives for Andale Racing. Andretti has been driving sporadically in the lower-tiers of American open-wheel racing, and has yet to be given an opportunity to shine at the top level. The opportunity to drive for Shierson, who are the secondary Porsche outfit, was one that Andretti simply could not refuse. "I couldn't believe it when I got the call from Doug Shierson. You know, I thought I was dreaming. It's a massive opportunity and I hope I impress enough to maybe get a few more drives across the season." Shierson was quoted as saying, "Jeff hasn't been given the chance to showcase his talent up till' now. We're not expecting him to beat or match Eddie and Scott off the bat, but we are confident he'll manage some very good laptimes. He's a good driver and hopefully he'll take this chance with both hands."

Impressive and incredibly odd to say the least. Especially considering it's only the team's third race and the car's an absolute dog anyway

If Moreno and Ongais continue like this, they can both make it into the race. Good to see that they improved from their performance in the third and fourth practice session.

Rich is doing pretty well. Too bad he died in real life 1990. :( Nonetheless, I'm pleased with the performance of my drivers, and I hope that we'll survive Indy.*
