WORLD RACING LEAGUE - GRAND PRIX MASTERS

Post by jakesanson »

Decided to create a new championship for everyone to compete in.

The great fictional racers from TV and film motorsports are gathered together here in the ultimate racing championship, featuring drivers from:

Days of Thunder
The Circuit
Herbie: Fully Loaded
Talladega Nights
Ta Ra Rum Pum
Michel Vaillant
Driven
Grand Prix
Le Mans
Winning

and the novels of Bob Judd, Sally Armstrong and Douglas Rutherford.

I will be revealing a factfile with all the drivers featured shortly. Looking forward to this exciting new project.

I have elected to do something a little bit interesting to create a rather unusual race series, and if it works I'm going to try it with other games and championships. It goes like this:

I will use an already existing racing game e.g. F1 2011, NASCAR 09, WRC 2, etc and replace the names of famous drivers in the game in the race results with our championship drivers' lexicon. So say for example, I was to use F1 2011 and the drivers names and team names would be replaced in order to create a championship. So say we were to create a championship for touring car drivers from the 1990s, it might look like this:

Team: FERRARI = Alfa Romeo
ALONSO = Gabriele Tarquini
MASSA = Grampiero Simoni

Team: RED BULL = Ford
VETTEL = Paul Radisich
WEBBER = Kelvin Burt

Team: McLAREN = Volvo
HAMILTON = Rickard Rydell
BUTTON = Tim Harvey

Team: MERCEDES = Vauxhall
SCHUMACHER = John Cleland
ROSBERG = James Thompson

and so on.

So using the lexicon, I can simulate a championship, write up the results and hey presto: a league to race in!

Of course, the random nature of running a league fairly needs to be created, so I merely pick a name out of a hat to decide who I will compete as, and select the intermediate skill level of handling with hard AI level to make it a challenge, and once a name has been selected for race 1, I then remove it from the hat for race 2 and then repeat this process over and over for the following races.

I propose for this particular championship to race in NASCAR 09, replacing famous driver names with our fictional drivers. I will give an entry list of cars and their numbers shortly, as well as the list of fictional drivers I intend to use and we'll work out the rest from there!

Here are the drivers I have chosen to feature in this list, I'm sure I've missed several names you'd really like to see so please throw those I've missed at me and we'll try to squeeze them in. (Not seen Sor Citroen so please enlighten me!)

THE CIRCUIT
Al Shines, Kylie Shines, Kid Walker

DAYS OF THUNDER
Cole Trickle, Rowdy Burns, Russ Wheeler

HERBIE: FULLY LOADED
Maggie Peyton, Trip Murphy, Ray Peyton Jr

TALLADEGA NIGHTS
Ricky Bobby, Cal Naughton Jr, Jean Girard, Terry Cheveux, Brian Wavecrest

THUNDERBOLT
Chan Foh To

TA RA RUM PUM
Rajveer "RV" Singh

MICHEL VAILLANT
Michel Vaillant, Steve Warson, Julie Wood, Yves Douleac, Gabriele Spangenberg, Bob Cramer

THE LOVE BUG (1997)
Hank Cooper, Simon Moore III

HERBIE GOES BANANAS
Pete Stanchek

DRIVEN
Jimmy Bly, Joe Tanto, Beau Brandenberg, Memo Moreno

GRAND PRIX
Pete Aron, Tim Randolph, Scott Stoddard, Bob Turner, Nino Barlini

LE MANS
Michael Delaney, Johann Ritter, Erich Stahler, Lugo Abratte, Claude Aurac, Paul-Jacques Dion, Larry Wilson, Vito Scalise

WINNING
Frank Capua, Luther Erding

THE LOVE BUG (1969)
Jim Douglas, Peter Thorndyke

HERBIE GOES TO MONTE CARLO
Diane Darcy, Bruno von Stickel

BOBBY DEERFIELD
Bobby Deerfield

The eagle-eyed may notice that I haven't included Jean-Pierre Sarti (GRAND PRIX), Alex Furlong (FREEJACK) and Piero Belgetti (LE MANS) who of course were killed in accidents in the films they were featured in. So there's the list of competitors, a bio will hopefully appear on them all shortly.

Forgot to mention, in the tradition of all great NASCAR teams, you are allowed to claim ownership of three drivers.

OK so here's how the driver line-ups currently look:

tommykl - Yves Douleac / Michel Vaillant / Bob Cramer
kostas22 - Ricky Bobby / Cal Naughton Jr
East Londoner - Jim Douglas
AndreaModa - Cole Trickle

So I will take Kylie Shines, Maggie Peyton and Joe "The Hummer" Tanto! ROCK ON!!

Here are the cars, their numbers, and driver who originally drove it (for point of reference):

01 Prinicipal Financial Group (REGAN SMITH)
1 Bass Pro Shops (MARTIN TRUEX JR)
2 Mobil 1 Penske (KURT BUSCH)
5 CarQuest Auto Parts (CASEY MEARS)
6 AAA Insurance (DAVID RAGAN)
07 DirecTV (CLINT BOWYER)
8 US Army (MARK MARTIN)
9 KK Alltell (KASEY KAHNE)
10 Valvoline (PATRICK CARPENTIER)
11 FedEx Express (DENNY HAMLIN)
12 Alltell Mobil 1 (RYAN NEWMAN)
15 Johns Manville/Menards (PAUL MENARD)
16 3M (GREG BIFFLE)
17 DeWALT (MATT KENSETH)
18 M&M'S (KYLE BUSCH)
19 Best Buy/Garmin (ELLIOTT SADLER)
20 Home Depot (TONY STEWART)
21 Little Debbie/Air Force (MARCOS AMBROSE/JON WOOD)
24 DuPont (JEFF GORDON)
26 Irwin Industrial Tools (JAMIE McMURRAY)
28 K & N (TRAVIS KVAPIL)
29 Pennzoil/Shell (KEVIN HARVICK)
31 AT&T (JEFF BURTON)
38 freecreditreport.com (DAVID GILLILAND)
40 Tums QuikPak (DARIO FRANCHITTI)
41 Target/Polaroid (REED SORENSON)
42 Juicy Fruit (JUAN PABLO MONTOYA)
43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker (BOBBY LABONTE)
44 UPS (DALE JARRETT/DAVID REUTIMANN)
45 Wells Fargo (KYLE PETTY)
48 LOWE'S (JIMMIE JOHNSON)
55 NAPA Auto Parts (MICHAEL WALTRIP)
77 Mobil 1 (SAM HORNISH JR)
83 Red Bull (BRIAN VICKERS)
84 Red Bull (AJ ALLMENDINGER)
88 National Guard (DALE EARNHARDT JR)
96 DLP Texas Instruments (JJ YELEY)
99 Office Depot (CARL EDWARDS)

That's only 38 of course of the official cars and drivers in NASCAR 09 and these are the seats that should be selected first as they are the cars guaranteed to make the grid at every event, but there are also 19 unofficial entrants:

008 Sprint/NASCAR (JESSE CLEMONS)
111 O'Reilly (SCOTT WATKINS)
119 Aaron's (WAYNE DWIGHT)
132 CarQuest Auto Parts (WALLY BLAKE)
137 Maxell (ERIC FIGGINS)
141 ea.com (WADE SANDERS)
142 NASCAR.com (CONWAY STERLING)
143 Richard Petty Driving Experience (CHRIS McKEE)
144 Coca Cola (PAUL BROOKS)
145 NAPA Auto Parts (DARYL SYKES)
151 EA Sports (TODD PETERSON)
153 O'Reilly (ANDREW KATE)
169 Kroger (BRUCE PAYNE)
174 Cintas (KIP BRANCH)
175 WinCraft Racing (BUCKY OLIVER)
178 All Pro (GREG QUICK)
179 ESPN (WALT ESPINOZA)
184 Advance Auto Parts (DANNY RANDOLPH)
199 Tiburon/EA (MICHAEL FERNANDEZ)

These cars will be fighting for spaces on the NASCAR grid with only five getting a space each event. I also realise it takes us to 57 cars in total so I need t elect another 8 drivers to our list so I'll also add:

Aldo Bennedetti (DAYS OF THUNDER)
Steve Grayson (SPEEDWAY)
Lucky Jackson (VIVA LAS VEGAS)
Rudi Walters (THE LOVE BUG 1997)
Tony Stark (IRON MAN 2)
Watts Davies (KART RACER)
Sor Citroen (SOR CITROEN)
Johnny Dark (JOHNNY DARK)

I refuse to involve SPEED RACER as stunt racing hasn't been invented yet. And hopefully, never will.

Sor Citroen isn´t from a racing movie. It´s a cheesie 60´s Spanish comedy film about a nun who has to learn to drive... Imagine not a woman, but a Nun driving in the Spanish sixties! (remember Spain was going under a military dictatorship at the time and was very undeveloped back then -both technologically and socially-)

Hate to say it, but by the very token that she isn't ACTUALLY a racng driver she doesn't qualify. When put up against drivers like Beau Brandenberg, Michel Vaillant and Jim Douglas, world champions in their fields, it just doesn't add up. Authenticity is the key here. Sorry.

A little confused, as I thought you wanted RV Singh. Do you still want him AND Nino Barlini? Then you have a three car team?

#48 IS still up for grabs, as Sor Citroen is no longer eligible to compete. She will be replaced by another racer, Warner Kaugman (THUNDERBOLT).
