2005

Tiago Monteiro 73 (3 wins, 1 3rd)
Felipe Massa 70 (5 wins, 1 3rd)
Jacques Villeneuve 59 (1 win, 1 2nd, 3 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello 52 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Narain Karthikeyan 51 (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
David Coulthard 43 (4 2nd)
Christijan Albers 41 (1 3rd, 4 4th)
Takuma Sato 38 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ralf Schumacher 37 (1 win, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jenson Button 30 (3 wins)
Jarno Trulli 30 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Christian Klien 29 (1 2nd, 3 3rd)
Mark Webber 23 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Robert Doornbos 23 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Nick Heidfeld 19 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Giancarlo Fisichella 17 (2 3rd)
Juan Pablo Montoya 12 (1 win)
Antonio Pizzonia 11 (1 win)
Patrick Friesacher 11 (1 4th)
Kimi Raikkonen 10 (1 win)
Fernando Alonso 4 (1 5th)

Sauber 129
Jordan 124
Minardi 77
Red Bull 72
BAR 68
Toyota 67
Williams 53
Ferrari 52
McLaren 22
Renault 21

Race winners:

Australia: Button (maybe that's why BAR parked on the last lap!)
Malaysia: Massa
Bahrain: Massa
San Marino: Massa
Spain: Montoya
Monaco: Massa
Europe: Raikkonen (he was first lapped runner after his tyre blowout)
Canada: Ralf Schumacher
USA: Monteiro
France: Button
Great Britain: Massa
Germany: Barrichello
Hungary: Webber
Turkey: Barrichello
Italy: Villeneuve
Belgium: Monteiro
Brazil: Button
Japan: Monteiro
China: Pizzonia

This looked for all the world like being back-to-back titles for Massa with 49 points from the first 7 races but an increasing number of safety cars late in the season prevented him from being lapped much, and indeed Monteiro scored in all-but-three races (France where only the top three were on the lead lap thereby only being 10th lapped runner, Brazil when he retired and China when he was on the lead lap). Sauber consoled themselves with yet another constructors championship as Jordan couldn't quite catch them due to the weak link Karthikeyan, indeed with Minardi 3rd all of the top 3 teams were bought out for the following season (and the 4th, Red Bull, had been the previous winter!)

Elsewhere Barrichello makes Michael Schumacher look like Dave Walker by outscoring him 52:0.

And if you all thought Monteiro being champion was madness enough......

2006

Vitantonio Liuzzi 70 (2 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Nick Heidfeld 68 (4 wins, 3 2nd)
Scott Speed 62 (2 2nd, 5 3rd)
David Coulthard 59 (2 wins, 3 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jarno Trulli 58 (4 wins, 1 2nd)
Rubens Barrichello 39 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Christijan Albers 37 (1 2nd, 1 4th)
Nico Rosberg 30 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Christian Klien 29 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Tiago Monteiro 29 (2 4th, 2 5th)
Takuma Sato 28 (1 win, 1 3rd) - A WIN FOR SOOPA AGOORI!!!!!
Ralf Schumacher 27 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Mark Webber 21 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jenson Button 19 (1 win, 1 4th)
Robert Doornbos 17 (2 3rd)
Felipe Massa 12 (2 3rd)
Robert Kubica 10 (2 4th)
Jacques Villeneuve 9 (1 4th)
Pedro De La Rosa 8 (1 2nd)
Yuji Ide 5 (1 4th)
Michael Schumacher 5 (1 4th)
Sakon Yamamoto 5 (2 7th)

Toro Rosso 132
Red Bull 105
BMW-Sauber 87
Toyota 85
Midland/MF1/Spyker or whatever they were called 66
Honda 58
Williams 51
Super Aguri 38
Ferrari 17
McLaren 8
Renault 0

Race winners:

Bahrain: Heidfeld
Malaysia: Trulli
Australia: Button (2nd year in a row he's deliberatly stopped on last lap, naughty!)
San Marino: Heidfeld
Europe: Trulli
Spain: Barrichello
Monaco: Heidfeld
Great Britain: Barrichello
Canada: Trulli
USA: Coulthard
France: Heidfeld
Germany: Liuzzi
Hungary: Coulthard
Turkey: Trulli
Italy: Klien (in his last race before joining HRT in 2010!!!)
China: Liuzzi
Japan: Rosberg
Brazil: Sato (amazing!!)

Well now we have a reject driving for the ex-Minardi team winning championship, and the team winning the constructors!! The only minor disappointment on that front was Scott Speed failing to win a race though he did manage 7 podiums. For the second year in a row, a sauber driver, this time Heidfled gunning for his 3rd title, looked to have it won until he stopped getting lapped in the latter part of the year, he only scored 4 points in the last 7 races, and was probably on course for the title in Brazil as he was lapped until he crashed in the latter stages. Also Super Aguri win the last race of the year thanks to Sato's heroics, and even Yuji Ide unrejectifies himself with a 4th in Oz! Fairly disappointing title defence by Monteiro, not managing a single podium but he did score fairly regularly.

Re: The Lapped Alternative Championship

OK, I've got a problem for 2007 which I just didn't foresee and would like to ask people's opinion of what they think would be the best idea for the predicament I have - I won't say which drivers and teams are involved but it DOES affect the championship (not the drivers' but the constructors' changes hands depending on the ruling here).

One of the races has everyone either finish on the lead lap or retire, and the most laps anyone who retires completes is 58 out of 70 so there aren't any classified lapped runners.

Should I:

A) Take the "winner" to be the driver who retires but completes most laps (and other drivers to score points have to have completed 90% of that "winning" driver's laps).

Or B) Just not have any winner or points awarded for that race?

I welcome everyone's opinion. :)

When such a situation has arisen in real life, I believe no points have been given to anyone who didn't complete 90% distance. Therefore, no points should be given here.

I'll do it that way then. ;-)

2007

Rubens Barrichello 63 (1 win, 2 2nd, 3 3rd)
Giancarlo Fisichella 58 (3 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Alexander Wurz 51 (2 wins, 2 2nd)
Ralf Schumacher 49 (2 wins, 2 2nd)
Takuma Sato 49 (1 win, 2 3rd)
Jarno Trulli 45 (1 win, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jenson Button 41 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Anthony Davidson 38 (3 3rd)
Heikki Kovalainen 28 (2 wins)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 23 (1 win, 1 4th)
David Coulthard 23 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Adrian Sutil 19 (1 3rd)
Lewis Hamilton 18 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Nico Rosberg 18 (1 win, 1 5th)
Sakon Yamamoto 14 (1 2nd)
Scott Speed 12 (1 4th)
Nick Heidfeld 11 (1 3rd)
Robert Kubica 9 (1 2nd)
Christijan Albers 9 (1 4th)
Mark Webber 8 (1 3rd)
Kazuki Nakajima 5 (1 4th)
Felipe Massa 5 (1 4th)
Sebastian Vettel 5 (2 7th)
Kimi Raikkonen 4 (1 5th)

I'm pretty sure Alonso is the only regular not to score.

Honda 104
Toyota 94
Super Aguri 87
Renault 86
Williams 74
Spyker 41
Toro Rosso 40
Red Bull 31
BMW-Sauber 20
McLaren 18 (if you let their score count!!)
Ferrari 9

Race winners:

Australia: Rosberg
Malaysia: Barrichello
Bahrain: Wurz
Spain: Sato
Monaco: Fisichella
Canada: nobody (that's the race I referred to above with lots of safety cars)
USA: Fisichella
France: Ralf Schumacher
Great Britain: Kovalainen
Europe: Kovalainen
Hungary: Trulli
Turkey: Ralf Schumacher
Italy: Fisichella
Belgium: Liuzzi
Japan: Button (if he hadn't stopped on the last lap it would have been Yamamoto - go home Jenson!!!) :) )
China: Wurz
Brazil: Hamilton (and in doing so McLaren overtook Ferrari to avoid the wooden spoon!)

Well at least this shows that the lousy Earth Dreams Honda RA 107 was actually good for something. ;-)

If I had chosen option A for Canada then the "winner" would have been Trulli, and the extra 10 points gained by Toyota would have enabled them to beat Honda on most wins. A Japanese constructors 1-2-3 is something to behold though!

Also a very good year for the veterans - 5 of the top 6 (would have been top 5 if Trulli had won Canada) were the "old-timers" who were all dissed in the F1 Rejects year review (I think Coulthard was spared though)! Wurz picked a good time to retire though - he won in China but thanks to Rubens' 4th place, Wurz no longer had a mathematical chance of the title, so moved on bowing out with a win! Once Fisichella retired early in Brazil, Rubens was safe even though he later retired.

2008

Jenson Button 70 (3 wins, 4 2nd)
Kazuki Nakajima 55 (1 win, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Giancarlo Fisichella 52 (3 wins, 2 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello 52 (2 wins, 2 2nd)
Nico Rosberg 43 (1 win, 5 3rd)
Sebastien Bourdais 41 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Heikki Kovalainen 31 (1 win, 2 2nd)
David Coulthard 29 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Kimi Raikkonen 26 (2 wins, 1 3rd)
Adrian Sutil 23 (2 4th)
Timo Glock 20 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Fernando Alonso 16 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Nick Heidfeld 14 (1 win, 1 5th)
Mark Webber 12 (1 win, 1 7th)
Jarno Trulli 12 (2 4th)
Takuma Sato 12 (1 4th)
Anthony Davidson 9 (1 4th)
Lewis Hamilton/Robert Kubica both 8 (1 2nd) - impossible to separate
Nelson Piquet Jr 4 (1 5th)
Felipe Massa 3 (1 6th)
Sebastian Vettel 2 (1 7th)

Honda 122
Williams 98
Force India 75
Toro Rosso 43
Red Bull 41
McLaren 39
Toyota 32
Ferrari 29
BMW-Sauber 22
Super Aguri 21
Renault 20

Race winners:

Austrlia: Nakajima (!!)
Malaysia: Fisichella
Bahrain: Fisichella
Spain: Fisichella
Turkey: Button
Monaco: Alonso
Canada: Bourdais (!!!!)
France: Barrichello
Great Britain: Raikkonen
Germany: Button
Hungary: Button
Europe: Webber
Belgium: Kovalainen
Italy: Coulthard
Singapore: Raikkonen
Japan: Barrichello
China: Rosberg
Brazil: Heidfeld

And it's another title for Earth Dreams Honda, and the first time since 1979 that a real-life World Champion wins this title! I must admit though, when it became clear who the title contenders were (the Hondas, Fisichella and Nakajima), I was really rooting for Nakajima, not to be though, the "wrong" Williams of Rosberg won in China while Nakajima was 2nd last unlapped runner, which confirmed Button as champion. Only two really obscure winners for the season too, Nakajima in Austrlia and Bourdais in Canada. Incidentally, Canada, Germany and Singapore were races with only one classified lapped runner (and Raikkonen in Singapore was only due to crashing in closing laps).

McLaren and Ferrari score surprisingly well mainly due to their Finnish drivers than the real title contenders, and no driver or team failed to score, though Kubica had to wait until the last race, indeed BMW-Sauber only managed 4 points in the first 17 races but managed a 1-2 in Brazil!!

I'm quite shocked to see Piquet scoring only four points - but then he crashed out quite a lot - deliberately or not.

He retired quite a lot in the first half of the season, was last unlapped runner a couple of times (Malaysia and Valencia), then was more competitve later in the season so only got lapped once in Turkey.

2009

Giancarlo Fisichella 43.5 (3 wins, 1 2nd) - 33.5 for Force India, 10 for Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton 40 (3 wins, 1 3rd)
Adrian Sutil 34 (1 2nd, 2 3rd*)
Sebastien Buemi 33 (3 2nd*, 1 3rd)
Romain Grosjean 31 (2 wins, 1 3rd)
Nelson Piquet Jr 27 (1 win, 2 3rd)
Jaime Alguersuari 26 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Robert Kubica 24 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Timo Glock/Mark Webber both 18 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Nick Heidfeld 16 (1 2nd)
Sebastian Vettel (1 win*, 1 2nd)
Kazuki Nakajima (1 3rd)
Nico Rosberg 12 (1 2nd)
Jarno Trulli 11 (1 3rd)
Felipe Massa/Heikki Kovalainen both 10 (1 win)
Luca Badoer 8 (1 2nd)
Fernando Alonso 6 (1 3rd)
Kimi Raikkonen 5 (1 4th)
Sebastien Bourdais 4 (1 5th)

Force India 67.5
Renault 64
Toro Rosso 63
McLaren 50
BMW-Sauber 40
Ferrari 33
Red Bull 31
Toyota 29
Williams 25
Brawn 0

(*Half points for Malaysia. Only one driver ends up with a half-point becuase there were only 4 scorers)

Race winners:

Australia: Webber (what on earth happened to him there? He breaks his home curse anyway ;-))
Malaysia: Vettel (half-points)
China: Fisichella
Bahrain: Massa
Spain: Hamilton
Monaco: Glock
Turkey: Kovalainen
Great Britain: Piquet Jr
Germany: Hamilton (the only lapped runner after his delays!)
Hungary: Fisichella
Europe: Alguersuari (!!!)
Belgium: nobody (all finishers on lead lap)
Italy: Hamilton (crashed on last lap)
Singapore: nobody again
Japan: Grosjean (!!!!)
Brazil: Grosjean again
Abu Dhabi: Fisichella

This was a STRANGE year - with such a close field, there were often races where hardly anyone got lapped, including two where nobody was at all. For a while I thought we were going to get a real surprise champion in Hamilton but Fisichella overtook him by winning the last race. Hamilton was one of the last unlapped runners in Turkey, if only.......

Also Flavio Briatore take note - Piquet and Grosjean's total would have been enough to take the championship. OOps.

Also I noticed Badoer was 1min 42 secs behind the leader at Spa, on a lap taking 1m 48 secs. Also big oops.

The best podium though was Valencia- Alguersuari, Badoer and Nakajima. Manna from heaven!!

IIRC Webber crashed with Kovalainen in the first corner at Melbourne - Kovalainen had to retire and Webber needed long pit stop for repairs.

Barrichello bogged the start which caused a massive log jam into one and from there as you say Webber and Kovy got together (IIRC Kovy hit the back of Barrichello in the process although that could have been one of the Ferraris but I know someone damaged Barrichello's diffuser in the melee.)

2010

Heikki Kovalainen 193 (4 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Nico Hulkenberg 121 (3 wins, 1 2nd)
Jarno Trulli 111 (1 win, 2 3rd)
Jaime Alguersuari 103 (1 win, 3 2nd)
Rubens Barrichello 100 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Vitaly Petrov 95 (2 wins, 2 3rd)
Karun Chandhok 94 (3 2nd)
Lucas Di Grassi 92 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Sebastien Buemi 80 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Bruno Senna 80 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Timo Glock 74 (2 3rd)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 56 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Pedro De La Rosa 54 (2 wins)
Michael Schumacher/Kamui Kobayashi both 52 (2 3rd, 1 4th, 1 5th) - impossible to separate
Sakon Yamamoto 47 (1 3rd, 1 5th)
Robert Kubica 43 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Adrian Sutil 40 (2 3rd)
Nico Rosberg 34 (1 2nd)
Fernando Alonso/Jenson Button/Sebastian Vettel all 18 (1 2nd) - impossible to separate
Christian Klien 12 (1 4th)
Lewis Hamilton 8 (1 6th)
Felipe Massa 8 (2 8th)
Nick Heidfeld 1 (1 10th)

Unless I'm very much mistaken Mark Webber is the only regular not to score.

Lotus 304
HRT 233
Williams 221
Toro Rosso 183
Virgin 166
Renault 138
Sauber 107
Force India 96
Mercedes 86
McLaren 26
Ferrari 26 (McLaren beat Ferrari on countback due to Hamilton/Massa's points breakdown)
Red Bull 18

Race winners:

Bahrain: Hulkenberg
Australia: Kovalainen
Malaysia: Barrichello
China: Kovalainen
Spain: Barrichello
Monaco: Petrov
Turkey: Liuzzi
Canada: Buemi (after he led for real, tsk!!)
Europe: Di Grassi
Great Britain: Trulli
Germany: Kubica
Hungary: De La Rosa
Belgium: Hulkenberg
Italy: De La Rosa
Singapore: Petrov
Japan: Alguersuari
Korea: Kovalainen
Brazil: Hulkenberg (after being on pole!!!!)
Abu Dhabi: Kovalainen

It was only the three new teams who were getting lapped with any regularity, and Kovalainen was nearly always the best of those so it was a very comfortable championship win for his in the end, though Williams did really well of the established teams.

Virgin get a win too with Di Grassi, HRT failed but refer to the first post in the thread......

And another "Go Home, Colin Kolles" moment - Chandhok was leading the championship after the British GP then didn't drive another race. Even with that, he beat Bruno Senna who did all-but-one race, and also Virgin drivers. I think Kovalainen would have been too strong for him in the end though.

And to bring things up to date:

2011(after Hungarian GP)

Adrian Sutil 117 (3 wins, 2 2nd)
Nico Rosberg 90 (2 wins, 2 3rd)
Paul Di Resta 87 (1 win, 2 3rd)
Sebastien Buemi 84 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Jaime Alguersuari 84 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello 71 (1 win, 2 3rd)
Sergio Perez 67 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Nick Heidfeld 55 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jerome D'Ambrosio 48 (1 2nd)
Pastor Maldonado 45 (1 2nd)
Jarno Trulli 44 (1 4th)
Timo Glock 43 (1 3rd)
Heikki Kovalainen 41 (1 2nd)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 39 (1 win)
Vitaly Petrov 38 (1 4th)
Michael Schumacher 37 (2 2nd)
Kamui Kobayashi 35 (1 3rd)
Fernando Alonso 25 (1 win)
Narain Karthikeyan 14 (1 5th)
Daniel Ricciardo 6 (1 7th)

Force India 204
Toro Rosso 168
Mercedes 127
Williams 116
Sauber 102
Renault 93
Virgin 91
Lotus 85
HRT 59
Ferrari 25

Race winners:

Australia: Buemi
Malaysia: Rosberg
China: Sutil
Turkey: Sutil
Spain: Alonso (how ironic!)
Monaco: Sutil
Canada: Liuzzi (HRT win a race!!!)
Europe: Alguersuari
Great Britain: Barrichello
Germany: Rosberg
Hungary: Di Resta

Amazing how the new teams are struggling in comparison with 2010 - they're behind all 5 "midfield" teams, and ahead of only the top 3 teams, indeed Red Bull, McLaren and also Massa have yet to be lapped (Massa would have in Spain but he retired).

Lack of safety cars affects here a lot - only Monaco and Canada have had one. At the summer break last year, we had well-affecting SCs in China, Monaco, Europe, Britain and Hungary plus first-lap one in Australia.

Re: The Lapped Alternative Championship

Post by leywso »

I've just discovered this thread and the other alternative championships- they're brilliant!

I wonder, has anyone attempted a championship based on grid to finish placings? So for example Christian Danner would 'win' the 1989 US Grand Prix as he made up 22 places from his grid slot (26th to 4th), better than anyone else in the field.

My money would be on Pascal Fabre to walk away with the 1987 championship under these rules...

Really interesting topic. I think I never seen it before today.
It's a little weird to see Button winner of the Lapped Championship just a year before becoming world champion.

Singapore was a magnificent race for HRT and de la Rosa, as they scored their first win of the season.
Both championships are likely to go to Caterham, but which driver will win WDC? And we can't put down Marussias and if HRT can keep up the speed they had here, Pedro is also a contender.
