Reject drivers, reject team owners

Post by novitopoli »

How many Formula 1 rejects went on to become team owners/team principals over time?

I recall a guy called Bernie Ecclestone, who DNQed in a Monaco GP in the 1950s, and Lamberto Leoni's FIRST (even though I'm not sure that counts). Plus, i was sure Wilson Fittipaldi was a reject, yet he isn't.

Anyone else?

We'll be fine. It's Canon, non Kodak.

Who? Never heard of the guy. Must be retired by now at his age, if he attempted to qualify that long ago!

Luis Perez-Sala and his one point from 26 starts for Minardi, was also team principal for HRT in 2012.

Could you count Christian Albers? He wasn't long at Caterham but his official role was Team Principal.

Aguri Suzuki almost counts, but even without that 3rd place at the 1990 Japanese GP, he still had four 6th places to save him from rejectdom.

Struggling to think of anymore to be honest!

Trying not to include cases of a driver only entering a car for themselves:
  • Alan Rees was co-founder of both March and Arrows, and was team principal of Shadow.
  • Bill Aston and Aston Butterworth.
  • Tim Parnell and Reg Parnell Racing after his father's death, and BRM in the early '70s.
  • Kenneth McAlpine and Connaught.
  • Alejandro de Tomaso and De Tomaso.
  • David Murray and Ecurie Ecosse.
  • Paul Emery founded Emeryson and Shannon.
  • Rudolf Schoeller, Peter Hirt and Max de Terra all co-founded Ecurie Espadon.
  • ENB was founded by Jacques Swaters and Johnny Claes.
  • Adrián Campos founded what would become HRT.
  • George Abecassis and HWM.
  • Bobby Rahal was a team manager at Jaguar.
  • Guy Ligier and Ligier.
  • Doug Serrurier and Otello Nucci.
  • Roger Penske and Penske.
  • Lance Reventlow and Scarab.
And I'm not about to claim that's a comprehensive list.
