Quiz Bowl Meets Formula One - This Saturday!

Post by tommykl »

Right. Over the past year, mostly thanks to my attempts at getting on University Challenge, I've been getting more and more involved in the world of quiz bowl. This is essentially quizzing with the same format as on the aforementioned University Challenge. It's extremely difficult if you know nothing. It's extremely satisfying when you do know something. And you don't have the time to think about your success, because another question follows immediately. And the questions are always on academic subjects.

Until now.

I've written one single question packet (24 starters, 24 bonus sets) entirely on the subject of Formula One. And I'll be hosting a quiz for all people interested using this packet.

This quiz will happen in the chatroom, which you can find here: https://client02.chat.mibbit.com/?serve ... 3F1Rejects

I have not yet settled on an exact date or time, but it is likely to be this weekend in the early afternoon European time.

As for the specifics, I still need to decide whether to read questions aloud over an audio stream vs. writing them progressively on the chat, as well as whether the quiz will be individual or in teams.

If you would like to take part, please make yourself known, so that I can prepare accordingly.

Does listening to a dog licking its balls get you excited?

I won't mind entering, as long as its real early in the early afternoon. Y'know, time zones and all.

Great to see so much interest!

After some tests with other packets, the audio stream quality is good, but there's a lag of over ten seconds between me reading it and it reaching you lot. Due to this, I'll have to make some changes to how I run this thing, including starting a tad earlier than planned.

The quiz will be held on Saturday, June 13th at noon CET, which is 11am BST and 7pm for you, WaffleCat.

Apologies to tommykl and all, but I've just had real life interfere that won't end until late in Singapore time, so unless I can somehow access the audio stream (if there is) by mobile and trust my phone battery to last a full two hours with data, I will not be participating in this one. Sorry all.

To all the people who can't make it, I'll almost definitely run it a second time (and maybe a third) for people who weren't there the first time. I wouldn't want to prvent people from taking part :)

Well, that could have gone much worse! I got enough people to fill two teams, and while there wasn't much competition, it was a good experiment.

Final scores:
Team A - 335
Simtek - 85 (9 starters, 1 minus)
Miguel98 - 20 (3 starters, 2 minus)
roblomas52 - 15 (2 starters, 1 minus)
pi314159 - 15 (2 starters, 1 minus)
Bonus conversion: 83.33%

Team B - 170
Shadaza - 40 (4 starters, 0 minus)
AxelP800 - 20 (2 starters, 0 minus)
the Masked Lapwing - 10 (1 starter, 0 minus)
Wizzie (missed most of it) - 10 (1 starter, 0 minus)
peteroli34 - 0 (0 starters, 0 minus)
Bonus conversion: 75%
