Re: Another slightly different Alternative championship
One more for tonight, it's 1984 Elio De Angelis 200.5 (3 wins, 3 2nds, 3 3rds*) (what a totally cool points total!) Rene Arnoux 169 (2 wins, 3 2nds*, 2 3rds) Michele Alboreto 138 (4 wins, 1 2nd) Derek Warwick 112 (3 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd) Patrick Tambay 95 (1 win, 2 3rds) Ayrton Senna 89.5 (2 wins*, 1 ...

Next one! 1983 Alain Prost 213 (6 wins, 1 2nd) Rene Arnoux 183 (4 wins, 2 2nds, 1 3rd) Patrick Tambay 160 (1 win, 5 2nds, 3 3rds) John Watson 104 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd) - not bad for a non-turbo that year! Another slightly different Alternative championship
OK, based on the ones Bleu has already completed, and tommykl is currently doing a similar based on Bernie's medals system, this is the same principle as all previous champions are eliminated from the results, only this time every year uses the 2010 points-scoring system of 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 ...

Re: My own version of an alternative championship...
How about posting what the standings would be for this year so far, or would that be too predictable (a Red Bull walkover?)
By rejects eligible only, do you mean everyone is eligible until they unrejectify themselves, or qualified rejects only?

Sorry to be resurrecting an old thread - but both this format of alternative chamionship (and the one based on most wins in a season which tommykl is currently doing) have really fascinated me. I have been playing around looking at doing a similar thing where all previous champs are ineligible, but ...

To be honest I'm surprised Sauber didn;t keep him on at the start of the year, instead of PDLR, I can think he was picked as a foil for Kobayashi but Heidfeld had immediate reacing experience and surely his stenghts are in similar areas?

Interesting that the two Ferrari drivers could be facing each other in the quarters, and Hamilton will be against one of his two best mates in the sport.

I have to say Hamilton (sadly) and Bridgestone too.
But the good news is the first makes the championship more interesting, and the second is Bridgestone are leaving the sport at the end of the year!

I thought Benetton getting Ferrari's discarded 27 and 28 in 1996 would have been really cool, Alesi and Berger both move teams together and in the process keep the same numbers they had before!

Surprises here: Schumacher beating Villeneuve in 1996 considering their respective machinery! Schumacher beating Irvine in 1999 despite missing a lot of races.
What race did Magnussen qualify 6th for in 1997?

Re: Team Orders-gate: no punishment
To be honest, I thought it was a total no-brainer for Ferrari to get Alonso in front of Massa at Hockenheim by whatever means they could, if you ask me it was nothing like Austria 2002 (championship situation and race situation as Vettel wasn't far behind them). I agree the the rule is totally unwor...

Re: Teams assigning numbers to drivers
I did read an article a couple of years ago (late 2008 I think) that Alonso (2005), Raikkonen and Hamilton would all have been driving the iconic #27 when they won the world championships if they hadn't brought in the new system based on previous year's championship, in 1996. Benetton/Renault would ...

Teams assigning numbers to drivers
Not quite sure on the best forum for this, as it covers past and present, but I wondered if there was a definitive method that the teams use of assigning car numbers to drivers? I know the only one to be set in stone is the defending champion gets #1 and his teammate gets #2, but there doesn't seem ...

Surprised how poor Senna does in 1987 compared to 1986, the Lotus was no worse compared to Williams/McLaren that year, he even finshed higher in the championship for real!
Also surprised how far down the Benettons are in 1988 and 1990, and also Mansell is ahead of Prost in 1990!

How about Rene Arnoux for "Hang Up The Keys"?
I'm thinking of the years he was at Ligier in the late 80s trundling around at the back, DNQing several times and blocking everyone lapping him (especially Prost), when he was in his 40s and the legendary James Hunt comment at Monaco.
