The Grand Prix Rejects All-Time Driver Ranking - VOTE NOW!

Post by tommykl »

This little idea came up on the chat. We were talking about surprising drivers we'd put in our all-time top tens. Then there was a collective thought: who would the forum rank as the all-time greatest?

Here's my attempt at it. All you need is to state your personal best Formula One drivers ever. In terms of talent, influence, pure results, whatever you choose. Rank as many as you like up to 20, as that's how many points-scoring spots I've included in my scale, which is as follows:

50 - 44 - 40 - 36 - 32 - 29 - 26 - 23 - 20 - 18 - 16 - 14 - 12 - 10 - 8 - 6 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1

The standings will be regularly updated in this post. You may now rank.

0. HWNSNBM - infinity
1. Jim Clark - 770
2. Ayrton Senna - 595

5. Niki Lauda
6. Juan Manuel Fangio
7. Fernando Alonso
8. Sebastian Vettel
9. Jackie Stewart
10. Keke Rosberg
11. Nelson Piquet
12. Alberto Ascari
13. Lewis Hamilton
14. Dan Gurney

Here is my list.

1. Jim Clark
2. Michael Schumacher
3. Jackie Stewart
4. Ayrton Senna
5. Alain Prost
6. Lewis Hamilton
7. Fernando Alonso
8. Jody Schekter
9. Alberto Ascari
10. Sebby Vettel
11. Robert Kubica
12. Niki Lauda
13. Stirling Moss
14. Keke Rosberg
15. Daniel Ricciardo
16. Jacky Ickx
17. Gilles Villeneuve
18. Juan Manuel Fangio
19. John Surtees
20. Jenson Button

I apologise for the lack of any big shock names in there, but all of these drivers mean something to me.

Clark as number 1 will never be beaten, the greatest qualifyer and out right racer the world has ever seen, even better than Senna in my view. Michael Schumacher was a juggernaut that inspired in whatever he drove be it WDC winning car or a pig, he can turn it into gold. Jackie Stewart is overall the most influential and probably the bravest driver of all time, campaigning for safety and hating the Nurburgring, yet winning at it by being the damn fastest thing you've ever seen.

The rest are all here for differing reasons. Button for example makes the top 20 by virtue of his skills in changing weather conditions, should a race be wet-dry I can imagine that even at peak all 20 in even cars that suit all their strengths (somehow!) Button could win so warrants inclusion for that alone even if such races are very rare.

Very awful that Van Der Garde wasn't on that list

I already changed my rankings like 50 times. I'm now forcing myself to stop changing my mind, especially seeing as it will most likely have little impact on the final rankings, but if I didn't, van der God surely would have made it eventually.

I was going to do a "proper" ranking, but I just find it impossible to rank drivers from across all eras. For all we know Prost was better than Clark (or vice versa), or Senna was better than Fangio (or vice versa), but we can never know for sure in the end. Also, as you can see from the amount of times I've edited my list, I can't trust myself to do rankings anyway :P

Trying to come up with some names, I already wrote a Top 34. That's a pretty hard task, though. I think it would be better to make rankings for each decade or such.

Couple of caveats:
1. Senna and Schumacher should be top 5 for raw talent, but Suzuka 1990 and Jerez 1997...
2. My "hang on, surely these guys should be in the top 20" list is probably another 20 drivers
3. I am certain I am not doing enough justice to drivers before the mid-60's or between about 1995-2005

EDIT - Thought I had better make it absolutely clear I was talking about Nelson Piquet Sr.

Well, it's about Formula One racing and there weren't any "Formula 1" regulations before WWII. If we speak about Grand Prix racing, though, Nuvolari comes undoubtedly first.

1) Jim Clark
2) Juan Manuel Fangio
3) Michael Schumacher
4) Jackie Stewart
5) Alain Prost
6) Ayrton Senna
7) Nigel Mansell
8) Graham Hill
9) Niki Lauda

14) James Hunt
15) Sebastian Vettel
16) Fernando Alonso
17) Damon Hill
18) Riccardo Patrese
19) Stefan Bellof
20) Jean Alesi

Disclaimer: I actually only didn't rank Ascari because I wouldn't know where to place him (really high, tho). Just count him as a "Position 0".
I'll probably alter it tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and so on...that's a hard task.

He did race in post-war Grand Prix events though, such as the 1948 French Grand Prix, which was run under the new F1 regulations. So technically that makes him a Formula One driver ;)

The End.

Well, it's about Formula One racing and there weren't any "Formula 1" regulations before WWII. If we speak about Grand Prix racing, though, Nuvolari comes undoubtedly first.

He did race in post-war Grand Prix events though, such as the 1948 French Grand Prix, which was run under the new F1 regulations. So technically that makes him a Formula One driver ;)

Oh, right! It's unbelievable how many things I'm learning here! :)
Well, Tazio being a Formula One driver could change things...

We'll be fine. It's Canon, non Kodak.

Re: The Grand Prix Rejects All-Time Driver Ranking - VOTE NO

Post by SuperAguri »

So, lets look at this in more detail....

22 people technically voted (shame on the rest of you), however 2 only voted for a single person so their votes are being discarded. One voted for people that are all time rejects but not all time drivers but still I will count the votes.

The points system should be more linear so I have gone for a simple 20 points for peoples Number 1 driver down to 1 point for the 20th driver.

However as this is all time driver ranking, it should reflect this, so only drivers that got 2 or more point rankings will be counted.

For fun, I am also going to add Dr Bells statistical analysis of drivers (https://goo.gl/VtbVuD), Autosports greatest F1 drivers as ranked by F1 Drivers (http://goo.gl/62LQwQ) and F1 Metrics greatest F1 driver (https://goo.gl/GvfZ1g)
